  1. I loved this book. I know nothing of diving but found it fasinating. The WWII history was great and the mystery of the boat's identity was very engaging. The diving accounts were absolutely incredible. I wasn't aware of the proximity to the coast that the U-boats achieved. I actually learned from reading the book that there is a U-boat sunk off Block Island, not far from where I grew up in RI at all.

Did you note from the book that one of the main diver's wife was a pro shooter? I can't remember her name but I had l researched her name at the time and found her to be on the Les Baer ladies team that is always pictured in his magazine ads.

  2. In Matt Burkett's last radio show with Taran, Taran talks about getting a Tromix Saiga to play with like Dean Makkos has. Benny posted they were the "berries". I don't know exactly what that means but I guessed it was good.

It was actaully seeing Wakal's and SinstralRifleman's posts that peaked my interest in them. It is just a fun gun, which is what gets me out on the range. Try one out, there is no denying a potential to win with it, like any other gun you put your practice time into.

  3. I don't know enough about big time 3-gun shooting to say whether it is the way to go or not. I simply don't get much match time with it. I can say that I have a lot of fun with mine and it has gotten me interested in doing more shotgun shooting when the conventional shotguns just didn't interest me.

The mag well from www.MDarms.com will be really nice. He has some pics of it on the http://forum.saiga-12.com/ and it seems like it is coming along, possibly in the spring. In the meantime I have gotten my reloads considerably smoother (faster but I haven't timed myself in a while) by dremeling my bolt to load to a closed bolt more easily, making myself a good mag release lever to ease weakhand reloading, and practice. I also made a mag cinch to hold two mags together and molded my own kydex mag pouch (its a huge mag pouch, it looks really funny). Ten round mags from AGP are on the net at a bunch of different locations. Mine have worked well... after I messed with the feedlips to feed the high brass of slugs better.

Tony from Tromix is the man to go to for a conversion with all the trick stuff like the shortened gas system. He is obviously slammed with orders though. The other guy to talk to, who is actually recommended by Tony, is Esteban at

http://www.ipscgun.com/ (something tells me he'll know something about our game). I did two of my own conversions and it actually isn't very hard at all. There is a ton of info from Tony and other guys on the Saiga12 forum. I e-mailed Tony and he gave me tips. It is doable with a Dremel and patience, but is really easy with a mill and Tig welder.

The threads on my Saiga were messed up and the Poly Choke I bought would not go on. I sent my the Saiga to Todd and he fixed the threads and put it in for free.

  6. Transponder security (the "chip") is optional for the 06 Xterra. So you may not have to have the bypass installed. An easy way to test to see for sure if you have transponder security is to wrap the head of your key in several layers of aluminum foil. Don't leave any of the key head exposed. If you have transponder security, when you attempt to start the engine with the foiled key, the transponder signal will be blocked and the engine will crank but not start. Remove the foil, the engine will start and run again.

Even if you have to have the bypass installed, it isn't a big deal. First, the good installers put the module way up in the dash. They take forever find and to get out. Second, it need not be a complete key. You can have an uncut key or key with the blade snapped off. That way, getting at the key in the dash does not compromise the mechanical security of the lock (which isn't much though). Some systems don't actually use a key.

I bought my wife a pretty basic Viper system for her VW a couple years ago and it has been great. We had to give up a spare valet key to put in the dash. It required that the power door locks be set up to work with its transmitter but the factory key/transmitter still functions. I think you have to lock the doors with the Viper transmitter before the remote start will activate.

  7. You can always fix those regrets. My parents had a 67 427 Vette that he sold in 1974 and always regetted it.

One day about three years ago my father decided he wanted it back so he tracked down the current owner and bought it back. It had a 327 then and he paid 10 times what he sold it for back in 74 but he got it and really enjoyed driving it again. He found a correct 427 replacement engine for it.

Of course, last spring he sold it again for double what he had into it. He doesn't regret it this time!

  8. The winters, even up at Vail, were easy. Snowy but almost always sunny.

Dude, you obviously weren't in CO last winter :D We are talking FEET of snow from at least 5 different storms. I felt like I was back in North Dakota again....

No, I wasn't there last year, I think I caught a good winter. I had come from VT to CO. Maybe the absence of "Mud" as its own season in between winter and spring made it seem so much better.

I forgot you guys had so much snow last year. Some friends were stuck at the Denver airport for a while.

  9. I lived in Vail for a year after college. It was very tough to come home. My younger sister lives in Boulder and is moving to Crested Butte. I don't think she's ever coming back east.

The winters, even up at Vail, were easy. Snowy but almost always sunny. I wish I was into shooting back then.

  10. +1000! But it is without a doubt something you have to see on the big screen, no way to get the same effect at home. Does anybody know if it will ever come out on IMAX?

Exactly. Saw it last night, it was one of the times I really felt like I got my money's worth seeing something in the theater. Don't wait for DVD.
