Hello,
I'm new to reloading, and I have a question about my crimp on the bullets. I'm using a Dillon XL-650 press, and loading Winchester 230gr JHP in 45 ACP. I'm using a mixture of Winchester and (mostly) UMC brass.
My first batch (50 rounds) of ammo functioned flawlessly, but my second batch (125) had 3 or 4 failure to feeds. I discovered that the on the ones that failed to feed, the bullets were setback a ways in the case. I'm guessing that as they hit the feed ramp, the bullet was pushed back and then wouldn't feed properly?
I took apart some rounds and the bullets that have been crimped have a definite line where they were crimped. It measures around .445 with my calipers, vs .450 on the non-crimped bullets.
I made a few test rounds, and pressed them on my bench to check for setback. 2 were fine, and on one, the bullet got pushed back. I may try making a few more for a better sample size.
So my questions (finally!) are:
1. Does it sound like my crimp is OK? Is it maybe too much or too little?
2. I've read that remington (UMC?) brass has some problems and that a Lee sizing die might be a good idea. Should I go get one? Will it just drop in and replace my Dillon die?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Kent
PS: Is reloading going to be as addictive as it seems... I'm worried!
