  1. I'll second the SMK/Varget combo, but if you don't find something that really shines, don't be afraid to try the 168gr and 178gr Hornady A-Max. They are a good shooting bullet and a bit longer in case your chamber dims are long and you want to load right up to the rifling.

I'd say you do need to stick with the 155gr-168gr area. With that short barrel and slow twist, it will be important to keep your velocity as high as possible for performance at longer ranges.

I'm running 44.6gr Varget under the 175gr SMK out of my Savage 10FP-LE2B (26" 1/10 barrel) and getting around 2750fps if I remember correctly. It might have been closer to 2800. VERY minimal signs of acceptable pressure.

  2. Why can't the match be labled here on the boards? Shouldn't this kind of thing come out?! I would want to know so I can avoid that match or RM in the future. Would also open it up for rebuttal from the RM if there were other circumstances that were not mentioned here. Perhaps the right people were NOT notified.....just sayin'

  3. Thanks for the tips! I think I will try a lighter bullet just to see what happens. My friend was using a 165gr in his .40 and running a 16# mainspring. His gun felt lighter than mine, which is why I was baffled even more.

If this difference in recoil I experienced was simply "felt" recoil (since both guns were shooting the same PF), I never knew that "felt" recoil could be so drastic. It literally seemed like my gun kicked twice as much as his. Can that much of a difference boil down to "felt" recoil at the same PF?

I'm going to try some lighter bullets over different powder and see what happens. I'll probably pick up a lighter mainspring and shock buffer too.

If anyone else has suggestions for things to try, please share. If you have your 1911 set up for 200gr bullets, I would love to hear your spring specs as well!!

  4. I'm not sure exactly of my friend's setup, but here's mine:

    STI Trojan 5.0

    14# ISMI recoil spring

    Factory mainspring

    200gr Moly SWC's over Clays averaging 840FPS

Friend's gun was a 5" single stack as well without slide lightening. Not sure of the recoil spring or mainspring.

Do you have any suggestions for what to play around with? I don't know if I should lighten my recoil spring anymore for fear of battering my gun, but I'm open for suggestions...springs are cheap.

  5. This weekend at the range, some of us were running a practice stage. I was shooting a .45ACP SS 1911 and a friend was shooting his .40SW SV limited gun. I hadn't experimented (or been concerned with) power factor shooting/loading until I got into USPSA, so there was no real basis for comparison on this, but when I shot his .40, the recoil was probably half of my .45ACP. I didn't have the chrono out, so we couldn't check both loads, but I know my 200gr bullets were averaging 840FPS because I chrono'd them a few weeks ago.

I have never owned a .40 and only shot factory loads (or equivalent power reloads) out of them until this past weekend. Should the "felt" recoil be like this or should I double check my chrono? My friend said his loads were major PF, but we did not DOUBLE check.

    Any thoughts on this?

I've always thought .40's were snappier than my .45 until this weekend....

*edit* Next time I am able, I'll try to chrono my loads through another chrono just to verify that I'm getting good readings. They seemed very consistent, though.

  6. Some grapevine talk:

"I can't wait till Jacob gets soccer kicked off this show ..... BARF!

Even if my contestant got voted off (Scottie), I'd keep watching, just hoping that America would to their senses with this guy?"

  7. Switch rooms every night for a multiple night stay. It is a PAIN, but make sure you check out every day and check back in that afternoon. Yes, you will have to vacate your previous room. BUT, it counts as separate stays so you get all the "per stay" bonus points and promos associated with it.

4 nights in the same hotel = 4 "separate" stays and all the points that go along with it.

Alot of times you can get free nights/discounts that way along with bookoos of points on any reward card you have with that hotel.

HI Priority Club Rewards (as has been mentioned) is good.

  8. That formular was given to me by an old timer who sold me my first Tanfog

back in 1992 or 93, worked great for many years in combats & later longslide

    models that were standard/stock guns.

    I sometimes run a 9mm Limited(SMALL CUSTOM FRAME)nearly identical to your Stock 2.

(Win230 behind 160gn lead & Fed small rifle primers,10-12lb guide rod spring.

    Have fun Jim

Careful! Powder changes over the years.

  9. I'm not sure what a "stock 2" is, but I would assume your load data for 9mm minor would be pretty much the same across the board.

For data on those 2 powders, check out the load data center on Hodgdon's website. I know they list Titegroup, Longshot, and WSF for the 9mm.....not sure if they list loads for WST.

  10. Why NOT practice classifiers? Although it might not give YOU the personal gratification of seeing how well you handle the mind game of a stage and give you an accurate representation of your TRUE shooting ability, nothing's to keep anyone from setting up their own classifiers and practicing the heck out of them.

  11. Red rouge followed by 20-30 min in plain corncob. The dryer sheet keeps the dust down but doesn't seem to clean the inside of the cases as well as running a second session through plain corncob.

The red stuff just gets the brass too clean too fast for me to switch to anything "plain".

  12. Holy Smokes, Batman!!! Your kid is going to be incredible in a year! Imagine what he'll be in 10. He's already better than half the guys that shoot at the local club where I live. His reaction time is insane....buzzer goes off and BAM, the gun's out!

His reloads are up high and finger stays off the trigger when it should. It looked like he literally stacked those shots up close at the beginning of the stage.

I'm at a loss for words.....GOOD JOB, DAD!!!

  13. I like the CMC Power Mags. I shoot SS, so run the 8 rounders, but I have had ZERO problems with mine. Although they are quite new, they do not appear to show much wear. I like the little bit of a base pad, so that's partly why I like 'em. I also like the holes on the sides so you can see how many rounds you've loaded so there are no suprises during a stage when you forgot to top off a mag.

Bottom line from what I've seen so far is I don't think you can go wrong with either the Wilson or CMC's. There's a reason they're so popular.

  14. All a trigger job is is "simulated wear" anyway, so breaking in should be a non-issue. As far as safety, your tolerances seem ok and since you used a jig and did your homework, it sounds like you're left with a nice and SAFE trigger! Especially at 3.75lbs, you shouldn't have any issues barring the steel type that other posters mentioned.

Good luck and congrats on taking the dive! Trigger work can be intimidating....I know it is for me.

  15. You just dropped hundreds of dollars on reloading stuff not including what your gun's worth....what's another $20 for a Lee Reloading Manual?

I could very easily say "no, you don't need one" based on the fact that you're only loading 1 caliber and your start grains look ok, but I would be doing you an injustice. Get one and you'll use it more than you think.

Do you need it to load a few rounds? No, but like everyone else said, you need to double check what you read on the internet with something in writing and you'll learn more than just powder charge from a good manual.
