  1. you could have reshot one third of the classifier to try and make up that one second. personally having been in your shoes (missing SSP SS by 21.5 seconds) and stayed MM the rest of the year, i would rather make it into the next class by .001 seconds. It would have given me more encouragement to get better instead of just coasting at the top "sandbagging". I went to a major match as a MM, took 3rd and beat everyone in SS. Had i been SS and shot the same match i would have made EX. You can always reshoot the classifier in a month or so and maybe you will get into SS.

I switched to SSR this year and barely classed into SS at the end of last year, im hoping to make EX this year in ssr via classification or match bump

  2. no need to put the safety on if shooting DA first shot. you can if you feel like it though. However if you decided to shoot ESP you will have to leave the hammer cocked with the safety engaged.

  3. I have been shooting my P30L for a couple of years and i am thinking of changing platforms and was hoping the fine folks at BE could help me with a price check.

I have a P30L with the following goodies

    - O-case, interchangeable panels/back straps, manual, and test case

    - Approx round count 3k-4k

    - 6 Factory HK 15 round mags (4 used for comp/practice 2 were for carry)

    - Blade Tech DOH holster

    - 2 safariland 074 mag pouches

I am estimating the value of the package to be right around $1100 and was looking for input to see if i am in the right ball park.

  4. so i sent in my XYZ TV in for warranty work two weeks ago and finally got it back today only to be missing the screws that hold the neck to the monitor. now i still have a broken tv and have to wait for these screws to arrive.....

  5. the club your shooing at should provide the pasters. As a rule of thumb, if your not the next shooter up or on deck to shoot, you should help past targets to keep things moving along.

** edit** do not paste until the score keeps directs you to do so.. - thanks jim i forgot to mention that

  6. i am not positive for certain, perhaps a quick e-mail/call to the IDPA HQ is in order but i think you could argue it legal under the following stipulations.

    PERMITTED Modifications (Inclusive list):

    4. Internal action work may be used to enhance trigger pull as

long as safety is maintained (no visible external modifications

    allowed).

    6. Internal accuracy may be worked to include replacement of

barrel with one of factory configuration and original caliber.

IRL who is going to know for sure unless they strip your whole slide apart.

  7. It wouldn't bother me however to see a sliding scale for power FLOOOOOR tho, so that folks who choose to shoot their compact guns from time to time wouldn't have to load hotter and be at even more of a disadvantage. OTOH, it's still probably a lot softer than SD ammo.

my IDPA 9mm reloaded ammo is still "softer" to me than factory ball from wally world in terms of recoil across the board (kahr P9, HK USPc, P30L, and Spartan 9mm) for ssp/esp. i would have to check, but i think my current loads out of my P9 would be right around 125 pf from a 3.6 in barrel and i am getting 128pf out of a 3.85 in barrel. so i might have to bump up my charge to 3.9grs from 3.8grs to make PF, which is really not that big of a difference.

i dont see the need for a sliding power factor scale for ssp/esp/cdp as factory ammo easily makes min PF. now in esr some tweaking may be needed for "compact" revos like a moon-clipped SP101 shooting 9mm, as 165 pf is not really feasible nor safe. my 130pf SSR loads are very stout in a j-frame but nice and soft in my GP100 but nearly 30oz difference will do that ;)

  8. From my P30L - 4.45 in barrel and USPc 9mm 3.85 in barrel, i lose 5 pf (133pf to 128pf) using the same 124gr load.

So, the "power" (momentum) of a pistol round drops ~3% with a 13% reduction in barrel length. Not much.

personally i done see how making a separate division for "compact guns" is going to make the big of a difference long term. i would put money down that bob vogal could turn in similar times using a G34, a G17, and a G19. lets be honest, why would you run out and buy a g26 if a G19 is the "longest" gun allowed in the compact division? then are people going to cry foul that they cant be competitive with a G26 and demand a new division for that gun? Barrel length/sight radius is not what makes the difference, the shooter is, plain and simple.

Yes, Bob Vogel with a pocket pistol could outperform almost anyone with a race gun. That does not mean that a pocket pistol is better than -- or just as good as -- a race gun. There isn't one thing that makes the difference; there are multiple things -- namely skill and equipment.

Many people carry a compact pistol but also buy a full-size pistol for competition. It seems reasonable to offer a division for true carry guns -- and the difference between a compact gun and a full-size gun is greater than the difference between, say, an XD (ESP) and a Glock (SSP).

define "true" carry guns. i know people that carry daily their government 1911, 10mm 1911's, sig 226's, HK USP's, G29's, 4 in .357's. and on down the line to Kahr CM9's and j frames. so to say a division is for "true" carry guns only seems difficult to define it in those terms.

in most cases the shooter is losing roughly an inch of barrel length and sight radius and an few oz in weight. when i went from a P30 to a P30L the only thing that really changed besides the extra sight radius and barrel length was it made the 20+ yard shots easier. felt recoil was about the same too, controls, trigger, grip, etc were all the same. For some shooters there will obviously be more "felt" recoil due to the fps loss of the shorter barrel but that can be overcome through practice.

so this compact division is created, every one that shoots it will be making the same mods to their "little/compact" race gun that they made on their "big" race guns. so now you have a G34 and G19 that are identical internally. at the club level you might see a greater difference in scores but at the state/regional/national level i doubt you will see much difference in scores between esp/ssp when looking at top tier shooters. now if you wanted to make the BUG division a full blown division and not just a side match, you might have better luck and allow those shooters to utilize an additional magazine/speed loader. however i feel you will get about as much participation in that as ESR.

  9. Would you hold the power factor at 105,000, or drop it to around 90,000 to accomodate the .380s?

I wouldn't drop the power factor to accommodate .380s in a compact division, but I would in a subcompact division.

How much less velocity does a 9mm round have coming out of a Glock 19 vs. a 17 or 34, by the way?

And should IDPA stick to a momentum-based measure of "power"?

From my P30L - 4.45 in barrel and USPc 9mm 3.85 in barrel, i lose 5 pf (133pf to 128pf) using the same 124gr load.

  10. regardless of your shooting discipline, if you are RO/SO ing it is your responsibility to make sure the load/unload procedures are followed. Now you have a shooter who just finished a course of fire and has a very fast unload routine and gets ahead of you (lets be honest it happens and we have all done it), i dont blame the RO as much as the shooter. The shooter in this case did not follow protocol and got ahead of the RO and an accident happened. Lucky no one got hurt as a result. I have made shooters go through the whole unload protocol again because they did not follow my commands the first time then that is followed by a friendly "wait for my commands while unloading" conversation.

Bottom line it is up to the shooter to actively listen for the range commands and follow them in accordance to the SO/RO's.

  11. have the barrel throated, that solved the feeding issues in my spartan.

it sounds like the mag springs are really tight causing to much upward tension on the rounds as they are being stripped off. Leave the mags loaded for a week as others suggest and see if that solves the problem.

As much as we hate to admit it, 9mm 1911's are fickle and take a while to get running right.

  12. That's a good idea. Have a few divisions based on size of pistol. If a Glock 19 or 23 could compete against other similar guns without having to worry about someone showing up with a G34 we might see more of them.

Bug your MD to run a full bug match then. FWIW i have seen master class shooter shoot just as well with a G19 and G34...... again its all about the Indian and not the bow/arrow....

You could also have your MD set up a BUG match so you can shoot those little guns.

  13. I have been trying to stay out of it, but ill put my 2 cents in

PF, i dont see how establishing a major and minor PF helps the sport, PF was just lowered to make SSR viable with most commercial ammo. I feel this turns it into "USPSA" Jr. The whole premise of the sport is about the shooter and not the gear, and i feel that MIN/MAG PF takes away from that.I am assuming that proponents of this want major and minor scoring too.....

Knee Pads - couple of thoughts on them, i dont care either way, honestly i think it should be up to the MD on whether or not they are allowed, but for those looking for black/white ruling on the issue, sufficient padding must be provided for ALL knelling potions (see no more knee pads) , and kneeling positions can only occur at the final position in a course of fire (there helps out those who can get down, but have problems getting up and takes away any competitive advantage gained/lost)

Divisions - Leave them, if any thing the tiger teams should be looking at ways to get more shooters into SSR, ESR, and CDP to get some of the congestion out of SSP and ESP. I am also getting tired of people trying to get the game changed to fit their gun. Live with the rules or move on. Harsh i know. PPQ shooters face the same problem as XD/XDm shooters yet i dont hear them crying.

FTDR - again one of the more vague rules but i still think it has a place. Ive ran shooters as an SO that choose to barney up on some stages for better reloads and down load to 10 on others. same as using a 7 v 8 and 9 v 10 round mag to start with 1911's in CDP/ESP respectively. this penalty discourages that where as a PE does not.

Mag Capacity - in some state the legal limit is 10 rounds in a mag, perhaps the main reason capacity is 10+1, if you want to shoot more rounds from your "big 170mm stick" head over to USPSA/IPSC and play that game.

Reloads - keep them but eliminate tactical reload from IDPA vocabulary and just call it a reload with retention - this way mall ninja's are not confused.

    Additional Rules/Changes

    - Sweeping one's self will result in a DQ, if i am not mistaken, IDPA is about the only action shooting sport that does not have this rule.

    - Hammer down should be changed to "dry fire", many of the shooters i have ran with decockers take this command to decock the gun where a dry fire is required.

    - Would like to see a minimum of two IDPA trained SO's per bay/squad. this will help with the enforcement and application of IDPA rules and typically provided a better/more consistant experience IMHO.

Personally i feel that the success or failure of an IDPA program rest on the shoulders of the MD and his/her staff. MD's that dont make their SO's go through training, are generally unorganized, and put matches together the last minute do not run good matches which leads to a bad experience (ive been to a few such clubs) compared to clubs that have strong leadership and well trained SO's and SO development programs.

  14. Like most of the Filipino 1911s, Spartans are good guns but they really need a good throating job for the best reliability. You would think STI would take care of this issue, but they don't.

After being properly throated, my personal 9mm Spartan will feed anything. Before--not so much.

truer words cannot be spoken. I had a lot of problems with my spartan out of the box and boy did i struggle through a tough 500 rounds before i called STI to get it fixed. I gave them a call and got an RMA and they took care of shipping both ways. I told them i was having problems feeding with 10 round metalforms and wilson emt's. i could only get 3-4 rounds to feed in a row with reloads, factory fmj's and jhp's. They ended up throating the chamber, built up and re-cut the feed ramp and tuned and put in a new extractor. they ran 50 rounds of various 115, 124, 147 fmj's and jhp's through the gun and then sent it back and it has run 100% since.

Currently im using Dawson 10 rounds mags for competition.

  15. just got my tax refund back and sadly i am not getting any new shooting toys this year but instead am being responsible and paying off some debt. I called into the lending agency to get the payoff amount. I "get" the first pay off amount of XXXX.XX and go to pay it off on their web site, but for $15 i can have my payment processed over the phone immediately. I go to pay the amount online and i get an error message saying i can only pay YYYY.YY amount. So i call back to see what the issue is and the second CS rep tells me the "real" amount is ZZZZ.ZZ.....

hope to heck i dont have to cut them a check for $5 for the difference between the three amounts because they cant get their ducks in a row....
