  1. no responses from hkguy - he clearly doesn't believe us ;)

Im here but have not had a chance to reflect and respond. Humble pie does not taste like it used to :/ . I've been busy chasing my kids around for the little time I had off over the holiday weekend. :( I don't get many holidays off working in the shipping industry.

I appreciate all your insight, ive been looking at it and over thinking too much. Looks like I have to go back to basics and focus on the fundamentals a bit more than I thought I would.

  2. I picked up a S&W PC 625 from a forum member here just before queen joyce changed the rules on me. I finally got around to working up some loads and putting in some practice at the range. I am not new to shooting REV, I have been doing so for 4 years now, though with my GP100.

My 625 is shooting POA/POI at 7 yards off a rest (as it should easily) but when I shoot it at my normal speed, I am about 5-7 in low and I am at a loss as to why. I am pretty in tune with my mechanics (movement science major). I had another member at the range take a video of me shooting and it appears that I am not dropping my hands, I don't feel like im slapping the trigger, and I don't think I am torqueing my hands down during the follow through.

below is a pic of the target I shot, red circle is from the rest, green circle is freestyle, and the yellow dot is my POA.

I am going to try and get a video posted too

Thanks in advance for your insight

  3. everyone is used to shooting their mouse fart loads out of their XDm 5.25's, Glock 34's and M&P Pro 9's, why would they want to shoot compacts and have to deal with all that additional recoil :D I mean they probably carry LCP's and BodyGuards anyway. (joking)

The last match i shot at my local club had 9 of the roughly 90 shooters shoot CCP, 3 shot rev, one shot BUG and the majority were in SSP/ESP

  4. Bill, I found that shooting the revo made me a much better semi-auto shooter. I still kept the revo mindset when it comes to stage planning and sight picture before breaking each shot. Im an EX SSR shooter hoping to get MA this year. It will take a little bit of time to make the transition back to SSP/ESP, but your splits and transitions will come once you get in to the grove of things and get a few practices and matches under your belt. The hardest part for me when i shoot a bottom feeder is remembering that i can shoot 10 rounds before i need to reload.

just remember a slower -0 beats a fast -3 more often than not

  5. I just took delivery of BIllR1's beautiful 625. the thing just shoots and now im all depressed because IDPA hates me. Im a 3 years SSR shooter that, at my last classifier was border line SS/EX shooting a lowly GP100. I was planning on making a run at SSR MA then switching to shooting ESR. I can tell you that at my club, i can keep up with most of the MA's on my first 6 shots and i typically finish inside the top 25% of 80-110 shooters at out monthly matches.

Personally, If IHQ's biggest reason for eliminating ESR is to hand out a few less "participation trophies", then they need to amend the rule on handing out awards, its a rather simple fix. Its rather disheartening to know that my membership and match fees are worth less than someone shooting SSP with their hi point. This just screams slippery slope to me, first ESR, then SSP, and then CDP will be on the chopping block as the division with the lowest participation, will Bill Wilson be able to save it? keep in mind, most of this is tongue in cheek.

My three requests to IHQ are rather simple for eliminating ESR:

What are going to do to promote the lone revolver division and help it grow? Revo Nats? Revo regional championships?

Would you limit CDP to 8 rounds and allow ESR legal revolvers and open CDP to allow .40, 10mm, .45, etc?

Would you limit SSP to 10 rounds and allow 8 shot .357/38spl revolvers to compete with 105pf ammo in SSP?

I feel this is a better way to give revolver shooters a chance to still play in IDPA and take advantage of the latest designs. I personally would love to shoot a 627 in SSP. But i know this is just a dream.......

  6. Im shooting the Apex FSS kit w/poly trigger too. Its really close to a factory 1911 trigger. If you go this route, make sure you have a "new" sear housing that uses the 1/8 in sear spring and detent. I had an old style housing that used the 1/16th spring so i had to order one of the "new" sear housings to make the kit work.

  7. i bought my wife a spartan and up graded it as time and money allowed. It is a great gun for the $$. I had some issues with feeding early on but STI paid for shipping there and back and make the gun right on the first trip back. Accuracy has been great with factory ammo and my reloads. for me, parts drop in but the fit has not been ideal. i have a small gap between the bottom of the frame and the magwell i put on it. other than that, its been great.

  8. the state and regional IDPA matches i have been to all cost between $85-$125, so an extra $50 for a national level match with the best shooters is not to expensive to me.

when you compare it to Single stack national, S&W revo nationals at $200 a pop, Bianchi cup starts at $275, Steel Challenge starts at $195 and does not include a shirt, given the big picture for all of the shooting sports national level events, IDPA seems to be in line with the rest.

  9. The only thing I can think of is that this would be a safety violation. Shooting a steel target at 7 yards could cause a ricochet which could hit another shooter, oneself, SO, or a non-shooter watching.

I have been hit by shrapnel from steel poppers and plates that was a good 30 yards away.

  10. I refuse to use FedEx Ground. There is a FedEx hub 10 minutes from my house. FedEx Ground tried to deliver a package and I wasn't home. I went to the FedEx hub to try and pick it up, and they told me FedEx Ground had no real affiliation with FedEx, and to pick up my package I would have to drive 45 minutes to the FedEx Ground hub.

I found my Fedex Ground hate rant from a while back. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=78667&hl=%2Bfedex

Sounds like you went to FedEx Express to pick up your FedEx Ground package. They are two different operating companies under the FedEx banner. This happens quite a bit :/

  11. Where is the 180 rule mentioned in the current IDPA rule book?

In any case, I agree with Gman, they call it a "safe area" not a "safe direction"

i dont believe its in the IDPA book, but its a common rule at most ranges. There is either a 180* rule, some indicator of muzzle safe points for a CoF or a combination of both.

  12. "Reason to buy" is read as "equipment race" by many. My wife calls it an "excuse", I call it a "reason" but that is just me.

i dont mean to imply "equipment race" at all. My wife wants to shoot CDP with a 1911. We dont have one, so we get to buy a nice blaster along with holsters, a few mags, and pouches. On top of that i eventually get to reload the caliber since i already reload 9mm for SSP/ESP and .38 spl for SSR. i know plenty of people who shoot SR9's and some who shoot with custom limited guns and les baer's in ESP, at the end of the day its usually the person with a glock or M&P who leads the pack

  13. Hkguy give me one logical reason why CDP should not allow other calibers?

If you only consider PF in deciding what calibers are legal and not legal in a given division, then i have really have no "logical" answer either way other. Why is the .327 mag excluded from SSR? It easily makes PF but yet its illegal? Outside of your PF argument, why should more calibers be allowed in CDP?

Honestly the 1911 is the platform is predominately used to compete in CDP though there are some that shoot tupperware. If you look at commonly available 1911, you rarely see any chambered in .40 outside of competitive shooting circles, (besides Para's and STI) you will find a few more 9mm's but a vast majority are .45's. I dont know why, but the BoD wants a place for .45's to play by themselves.I am not overly concerned, it just gives me another reason to buy another pistol, gear, and reloading equipment for my wife to play in that division.

  14. Perhaps you can call these new divisions open, limited, and production?

Which revolver division do you get rid of? Which group do you tell you don't want them becuase there aren't enough of you? It sounds like you have a lot of resentment towards revolver shooters. Makes me think your afraid to loose to one.

USPSA is a different game. I'm trying to state the fact that the law enforcement, tactical, and carry communities aren't fairly represented by IDPA. A sport who's founding principles are supposed to be more "real life" defense oriented... No one carries or issues SSR's anymore....

Not entirely true. you are correct in that most do not standard issue revolvers any more, but i some states armed security is restricted to revolvers. there still is a place for SSR and ESR. Since the BOD changed the min PF for SSR, the number of SSR shooters has gone up dramatically and i feel it will continue to do so once the ammo shortage is over.

looking at the above numbers with our current division requirements other than SSR why are or PF's so low? I believe IPSC originally set its PF's at 125 and 175 so shorter barreled guns would be able to make it with factory ammo. Our rules allow for using a division maximum size pistol to test PF so you would think we would set the limits closer to what 5" guns actually shoot with factory ammo. more like 130 and 185

    Mike

you only mentioned one brand of commercial ammo, this does not account for the numerous other factory offerings that any given shooter could bring to the match. you do not account for the velocity variation between different manufactures. we would not want another SSR type ammo restriction were a select few commercial loads made PF prior to them lowering the min PF to 105.

Personally i would rather see that the ammo make PF in the gun being shot that day, either it makes it or it does not. Obviously full size/duty guns would have an slight advantage in this respect but it still lets you run what you got.

now for my take on the rule book and a little rant of sorts

Im in the "its a little better camp" but i did not expect a drastically different set of rules. i'm glad to see that XDm concern was addressed and changed so shooters can shoot SSP and i am also welcome the newly proposed safety rules. My club has had a 3 strikes rule on the books for two years (summer matches average 110+ shooters) now and im glad to see the BOD get serious and make safety a priority.

I find all this well my .40 should be in CDP because it easily makes PF quite laughable, By this logic that power factor is suitable justification for adding a caliber to a division, a slightly modified Coonan .357 should be deemed worthy to shoot CDP because factory remington SJHP ammo comes in at 195 PF, easily making CDP PF. /scarcasm

IDPA is an action shooting sport created with the mindset that we will compete against one another with "real life scenarios", that is scenarios that you might face out in the real world. This is still a game at its core. Many of the CoF's that i am asked to compete in and shoot completely contradict what i would do should i find my self in a life or death situation. I am not using my typical carry gun, ammunition, holster and neither are 90+% of the shooters who play this game. There are some that do, but a majority do not. Honestly, just play the game by the given set of rules or move on, its just a GAME.

There are plenty here that want to can SSR, the division i shoot but you don't see me shedding a tear because some don't see any valid purpose in a revolver division (as indicated earlier in my post). There are always going to be some guns that are not allowed to play and excluded from certain divisions, you see that plenty in other action shooting disciplines.

  15. Or if it's legal I can shoot my 9mm 1911. I will know that when I meet up with the MD for the local match.

I can shoot a 1911 platform quicker, and more accurate than a striker platform like the XD. Might only be 1 or 2 seconds here and there but better for sure.

I guess the way I look at it is IDPA is just a different game than USPSA. If I am going to play a game I want to do as well as I can. I guess I will pick up a few FTDR's along the way.

my wife shoots a 9mm STI 1911 in esp and i have one being built right now.

you would be more than competitive shooting your XDm in ESP too.
