  1. I'm going to ask a real stupid question. How do you zero a shotgun that doesn't have adjustable sights? Is zero just a simple way of saying "figure out where to aim/point"?

The FN SLP MK1 has adjustable sights. The front sight can be tapped left and right by punching it with a nylon punch and brass hammer.

For slugs I kick up the little rear sight in front of the rail. I went down 1 line and that put me on perfect for elevation for my FN. I then tapped the front sight a little right and left until I shot POA/POI with my FN today at 50 yards.

I did not get a chance to see where the slugs land at 100 yards, but I am hoping to do that when I go back to work mext week.

The 50 yard zero seemed to work great, and I was dinging steel at 50 yards no problem today. I was shooting 1/2 sized IPSC targets made of steel. Spent a good 30 mins at work running slugs on steel and paper, and it seemed to work great for me! I am no novice at shotgun though ... I am somewhere below novice with shotguns ... newbie would be a better word for my skill level on my shotgun.

  2. So, is the rubber bumper the only thing keeping the mag from over insertion or is there a metal tab inside that rubber? If there is no metal behind that rubber then the rubber might be compressing allowing the mag to insert too far. Have you tried other mags?

The slot that the rubber bumper fits into looks right but maybe someone who knows more than me might have some insight.

I have tried a few other mags, I will take the mags apart and check them out. Next week I am also seeing a 1911 gunsmith in the northern virginia area. Thank you for the help!

  3. Ny is just plain crazy =P. Area 7 is a NRA sanctioned event. I recieved a letter after I registered that I need to keep with my gun in case I get pulled over (which means I will be doing 60 in a 60 and using my turn signla in the middle lane!

I also just decided to buy 10 round m&p magazines. Since clearly the m&p did not exist prior to 1994. I will say this though ... I will not stop attending matches in NY even though the laws are a bit strict. I would like to continue promotion of uspsa matches and generally all 2nd ammendment progress in any state. I am however upset that NY gets my tax dollars while I am up there. 8 hours is as far as I will go for a major match, and NY is the northern most limit for me!

  4. Thanks for the advice! I contacted a gunsmith and I will be meeting with him soon to fix the issue. I believe you are right about the magazine front and the blend job. Hmmm ... maybe smith and alexander are not the mag guide experts after all ...

    Great. Glad I could help.

Without seeing the gun I don't know if it is the fault of the mag well itself or the installer. Did S&A install it and do the blending?

    Chris

No S&A did not. A Marine Corps PWS 2112 (1911 / ar-15 armorer) did it for me. They made the whole gun, it was also the 1st time a 9mm was made in PWS. They only make .45s for Marines in teams and recon.

Ahh. I would expect that it is the blending work rather than the S&A magwell's fault. If you want to post a pic of the front of the magwell with the mag locked in it may give a clue as to what you need done.

    Chris

Ok Chris attached are some pictures. It was actually quite challenging getting the pictures to look right on the magazine since the shadow would always show the rubber end on my cobra mags flush with the gun. There is about 2 mllimeters of room from the rubber part to the bottom of the gun. I took my surefire and made some light!

+1 for the pro-am! Signed up a bit ago and got my confirmation. My wife and I are going to shoot it we can't wait! We are flying from virginia!

  7. Sounds like the inside of the mag catch needs to be relieved. I've had to do this with almost all the mag catches I've used in my guns. If you take the slide off and look down the mag tunnel with good light you can see the mag catch. Depress the mag catch and watch how far into the mag tunnel the mag catch goes. You will be able to see how much and where you need to use the file/dremmel tool.

What magazines are you using? There may be an issue with the magazines or the bottom of your grip frame allowing you to over insert the magazines. I have a Caspian 9mm as well and can't over insert either Mec Gar mags or Wilson mags.

    Chris

Thank you for the advise Chris! I dremeled down the mag catch and now mags fall free with out a problem. We use Wilson Combat ETMs in our gun, and occasionally on a dry reload we slam them pretty high. There might be an issue with the bottom of our grip frame. I have a smith and alexander mag well and it has been blended to the gun. Maybe not blended enough? or blended too much?

  8. +1 on the 15 lbs recoil spring from ISMI

-1 on the 13 lbs recoil spring from ISMI on a PRO

+1 on the 13 lbs recoil spring from ISMI on a well broken in 9L

My wife has a Pro and I have a 9L. We decided to experiment with some new recoil springs just right before the 2010 VAMD. At training the week before the match we noticed that her gun with 13 lbs spring would occasionally not go in battery. She also had a few failure to extracts. She shot about 500 rounds that saturday and had a handful of out of battery.

I changed the recoil spring to 15 lbs still using the ISMI brand. She shot 500 rounds that sunday as well (it was during one of my courses i teach) and her gun ran like a champ.

My gun is a 9L and it is heavily broken in. I have over 40,000 rounds through it and I use a 13 lbs ISMI spring. The gun runs great with my ammo.

My Ammo: 115 grain montana gold bullets, winchester 231 5.1 grains of powder, cci sp primers, random casings. 135 PF 1150-1200 FPS.

    Hopefully my rant helps =)

  9. My wife and I have the exact same problem with our M&P 9Ls. We purchased warren tactical rears and matched them with a dawson .195 x .125 F/O fronts and both guns shot 2 inches low when we shot groups at 25 yards. Even at 7 yards they pattern right under the front sight. Shooting 147s made them shoot point blank, but that doesnt solve the fact that i had 16,000 montana gold bullets sitting next to my dillon. We just tried out different sights and have gotten the guns to shoot nearly point blank. I just ordered a .170 x .125 from www.speedshooterspecialties.com and I am eager to see how the guns print with those on. That being said ... my 9Ls all print just 1 inch low using .180 x .125 f/o front sights and warren tactical rears. I have shot them on a bench, and verified the groups by shooters on the Marine Corps Bullseye team.

Without a shadow of a doubt I do believe its my velocity and light bullets. Factory 115 grains also pattern the exact same spot ... just not as tight groups =).

I believe your pro comes stock with a .180 front sight. After you shoot your gun on a bench and have a very good bullseye shooter confirm your pattern you might want to think about lowering your front sight. Go with .170 x .125 and see what the difference in group patterns are. By all means your desired results should be point blank with a pistol. There is no reason to have anything but PB with a pistol. (unless you are shooting optics)

  10. I was wondering if anyone could help me decide on a reliable ambi mag catch for my caspian 9mm 1911. I currently have a smith and alexander ambi mag catch, but the magazines tend to go way too high when I perform a dry reload. This leads to the magazine being stuck in the gun and my leatherman is the next thing that breaks out of it's holster. The magazines also tend to not fall out of the pistol when I hold down the magazine release. If I just tap it lightly they fall out, but if I hold down the magazine release like I am used to my M&P the magazines almost always get stuck.

Any suggestions? Below are a few pictures of the pistol as well. I had the Marine Corps Precision Weapons Section make this gun for my wife as an anniversary present, and my wife wants to shoot single stack now. This gun needs to be fixed before we throw it in her bladetech holster!

    Thank You for your replies,

  11. I flew them back from SSNationals. The STL agent was dumber than...... totally confused but had the audacity to tell me she has worked for them for 25 years. She had no clue as to what " I have a declaration to make" meant.

As with the other posts, I put mine in a used AA boxes and taped the crap out of them to prevent prying eyes. Nonetheless, the TSA dude, slit the tape to exam the ammo and sure enough ammo fell on the floor. He was mighty confused but recovered and passed me through the check.

BTW: I was told my hard sided case had to have two locks on it since there were two holes for two locks. Luckily I had extra locks on my other bags.

This is just one incident and probably does not represent Delta but it was a PIA.

It seems the new rules do not have the ticket agent confirming the unloaded gun and the tag goes on the outside of the case instead of inside. Again use old boxes and really tape them to discourage opening. Also if you have two bags split the ammo to get past the 11 lb limit. The ticket agent rarely looks into the other bag without the gun.

Good to know! ... Man what a pain. I will be putting two locks on my pelican case. I never even thought of doing that!

ps did they weight your ammo? Or did they weigh your case and say " that can't exceed 11 lbs?"

  12. I fly Delta all the time and have never had them comment on ammo boxes. However, I put all my ammo in factory ammo boxes that I pulled from the trash at the range. That way I don't have to bring any empty boxes back. .38 Super will fit in most 9mm boxes and the rest of the calibers in the corresponding box. It makes it much easier when you can just discard the empties.

Thanks for the response, looks like that is the angle I will be using as well!

  13. I was wondering if anyone had any information about traveling with ammo on delta airlines? I called the rep twice and they pretty much said plastic boxes are a no go, and I must have them packaged in metal or wood boxes, or original manufacturer's box.

I am shooting ammo made from my dillon, and I am not sure how I can get 11 lbs of ammo to the Pro-Am. Any advice on this with dealing with delta?

    Thanks,
