  1. And since we're sharing photos, it was stinsonbeach's custom .45-70 that inspired this thread. Perhaps he'll join the discussion with details...?

Didn't see photo? As I said, you are more than welcome to use anything I sent you ... pictures, quotes, etc.

Tried to upload a pic - nope - too stupid!!!

Whoa! Third time is a charm:

    Whoa! ...again:

Actually had a pic up but got this msg. "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community."

    Well I give up . . .

    This is a good thread.

I like what I'm reading here.

... & I sure would like to see some more pictures too!

Remember if you find that .44 mag octagon - find 2!!!

  2. It's my Steel .22.

Rear sight - RFI - trashed.

    Bought a new one.

Anyone know how to take the old one off the sight mounting base, remove the old one & attach the new?

I can't see how to take either the old off or put the new on.

I could punch the old out - I think - but how does the new attach? I see no way ...

    Help??? . . . & thank you!

    - the "shut up" thing was just fooling around. I know that was not your intent.

    - my 140 mags hold about 20 .40's.

    - I shoot SS too, as I think it is the "purest" form of shooting - but what a disadvantage ... oh I know you're only shooting against other SS but some of the unloaded starts & complicated arrays make those 8-9 rds tough...hurts my old head!

    "Racinready300ex"

    - round count was a secondary consideration, the component cost & merely the "why not" of it all was first.

    - you're right about the White Box. I didn't take that into consideration.

    - I was at a 3 gun match & my 9 reloads were too long (asleep at the wheel) so I borrowed some from one of my shooting buddies that was 9 major for his Open gun. To be honest, it was "easy do".

    - as for my "finish" . . . I suck anywayzzz . . . & you're right - I don't like it! HA!!!

Next, requiring 40 in limited limits your capacity. Shooting 9 major would completely change the division and the guns. Everyone would be shooting 9 major just so they can hold more rounds. I can understand 357 sig, ala Australia (or is it New Zealand?), but I don't think we need nine major. That being said, if it's made legal I'll covert..."

    "...his response..."

    - you're probably right about Phil

    - I must admit that is the very first answer to my question that makes any sense ... & you are exactly right! The round count -which I never took into consideration- "would completely change the division"!

Thank you, seriously, as I've been whining about the prospect for awhile & no one has been able to come up w/ an answer to shut me up.

    I'll shut up now . . .

  5. First why would you want to shoot 9 major with out a comp? Maybe you should work up a load and see how you like it.

    Why not?

I shoot .45 now & my friends think I'm nuts BUT the .45's pulse is so much "softer" than the .40 - & the .40 is a pain to load - & I simply hate .40's!

A 147 9mm needs to be going about 1,125 for major. Just about the speed of sound. Think that'll shoot softer than a 1.80 .40 doing about 920? ... or .45 200 at about 825 or 230 doing about 720?

So forget all that - how much cheaper is it to shoot 9mm than .40 or .45?

Doesn't "White Box" shoot about 1100?

...& then, after all is said & done: why not?

  6. Ok - I know the rules for IPSC - but why not (apropos to this conversation) ... w/ all the dearth of components not long past ... allow 9 Major?

I don't need to enumerate all the pros, you all know them already.

    So Phil, why not???

    You mean president Phil?

    *** certainly do

I'm also guessing that your question as to why not allow 9 major is in regards to limited division?

*** exactly so . . . I can't see a single reason not to - other than someone might have some major holdings in .40 ammo!

    Its already allowed in open

*** yes - & that bolsters the point: why NOT in Limited???

Makes no sense to me...tho to be truthful not much does these daze!!!

  7. Ok - I know the rules for IPSC - but why not (apropos to this conversation) ... w/ all the dearth of components not long past ... allow 9 Major?

I don't need to enumerate all the pros, you all know them already.

    So Phil, why not???

  8. For most RNFP I find that 1.240 runs through the magazines and feeds well in this particular brand of gun. You can go longer or shorter but this is what I settled on and it hasn't let me down yet.

Yeah, that's about what I run - maybe a little shorter when I don't know the piece & mags.

    Thanks for your input.

    I really appreciate it.

Better get to the loading bench & crank out some RNFP for Sat's match!

    Again, thank you...

  9. Springer can help you with the spring problem, I too found that reduced power springs were not as available for these as some of the other brands.

*** went to SpringerPrecision & got a reduced power spring, just hoping it'll fit my .45 Tactical (3/8")

None of my guns will feed SWC with 100% reliability but any type of RN, RNFP or HP's will go through them like butter through a goose.

*** thank you...I figured as much, but because my 19/2011 love the SWC & that's what I'm set up for & that's what I used my one time IPSC match. Not fun! ...but now I'll go change out the dies & hope the new spring I ordered will fit & everything'll work as planned!

My favorite saying: "Plans are what the Fates allow to keep themselves amused"!!!

    What's your AOL w/ RNFP?

Thanks for your help - I think you've taken care of my problems.

    Will let you know.

  10. Usually a 19/2011 shooter but bought this XD Tactical .45 a while back.

Want to shoot my target loads but need new slide/return spring.

Can't find a 3/8" so I'm going to clip some coils.

    Any "expertise" out there?

Question 2: seems it doesn't like my SWC so what do you recommend? RN? RNFP? etc., no HP's!!!

    Thank you.

  11. Part of an email I sent to Steve Rose at ROSEACTIONSPORTS.COM:

    ". . . I can't thank you enough! . . . & it's freakin' perfect! Exactly - better than exactly - what I had in mind!!!

You made it so easy & the piece is absolutely perfect! It couldn't possibly be any better.

I don't know what else to say, except thank you so very much."

If anyone out there has some custom work they'd like done, I can't recommend anyone more highly.

Yes I know this may not be the "correct" thread (see: above) but this guy's work is extraordinary.

"Flame" me if you wish, but I couldn't be happier w/ what he did w/ this old girl!!!

  12. Are you kidding me?

Oh man, I couldn't be happier! ...& so quickly!!

Now I gotta' cool my jets 'till it gets here next week!!!

Don't forget the "No Signature Required".

You don't know how grateful I am.

Looks exactly how I had it pictured! ...better actually!

No Alaska this year, but I'm headed to Tennessee next week to my buddies 100+ acres in the Smokies - I don't hunt or kill anything (except ducks!) any longer, but it'll be fun to have it w/ me & there are plenty of bears to scare off!!!

Again, thank you & my friends'll just have to eat their own livers in envy!

I'm a 1911 guy & I see a lot of your work is w/ them. I'm going to have more work for you soon, ok?

Guess I better get to the reloading bench & crank out some of those 405's!!!

  13. Choke markings should be on the barrel near the chamber. * for full, ** for Modified, **- for Improved Cylinder, **$ for Skeet, *** for Cylinder

*** yup, but as I said "looks like chicken-feet" not stars, but I have 2 of them so my guess is modified

Sounds like you now have the manual, so you're all set.

*** Steve from RAS - who is doing some custom work on another piece of mine - sent me some great info. Check him out at www.roseactionsports.com or stevespages.com. Great guy.

The spring and bushing setup is the same in 1985 as it is in 1958. Silver bushing first, then the spring, then the brass bushing for light loads. Flat side of the bushing always good against the spring. I just got a 1959 model. Shots like a dream. Mine has modified barrel (**)

*** mine's a '51. Took it to the range & worked out all the kinks. Points &, as you say, shoots like a dream. This is my first "Humpback". Always wanted one, but the new ones don't seem to have "soul". Saw this one at a gun show that I went there for 2 items & NOT to spend money, but there it was ... calling to me ... & I couldn't say "no"!

Questions: I've worked on lots & lots of my guns for years & years, but I don't want to wreck this one - tho I do intend to put down some serious ducks w/ it! - it has a bit of surface patina rust. Should I go ahead w/ some 0000 steel wool & oil it out? ...or just oil it down & leave it be.

#2: need a new butt-pad. Don't want to put on a new style. Want a period correct. Know where I can get one? Numrich? If I can't find one this'll do, tho it is dry & cracked & of no use!

    Thanks.

  14. Its not the 1951 version but this will get you started

    Thanks Steve.

Just back from the range & worked out all the details.

    It's hummin' right now!

    Great old gun.

No vent-rib. 28" barrel - speaking of which thanks for the roll-mark "reader". Was wondering what the barrel was.

Pretty much got if figured out.

    How's my 1895 doin'?

  15. "FlatlandShooter" - thanks, but what I need is an actual manual of arms for this old dog. All the new "Humpbacks" are different. Just now headed out to the range to see if I can work out my problems...shouldn't be all that hard - then again???

  16. Need some help.

Anyone versed in an old A5 manual of arms?

Called Browning & they sent me everywhere w/ no results for an Operator's Manual.

Always wanted an old A5 & now I have one but know I'm missing something ... lots of "something" actually!

Won't go into it now - put everyone to sleep - but if someone can help me, we can go into specifics then.

    Thanks.
