  1. what should I look for in a used 930

I'm not an expert but if it hasn't been modified (home gunsmithing) then not much else to look for. If it's from a gunshop, many have a short warrenty period even on used guns.

I'm not sure how much the JM loading port is "ported" but it may need further work.

After having modified a 24" turkey, I would buy the JM (the longer barrel/mag tube version) if I had to do it now (factory warrenty).

    David E.

  2. The main reason I would go for the JM is the coating on the mag tube. It might, might make a difference in the function of a really dirty gun. I think would be hard pressed to beat the JM price with an eual amount of work and parts. If the JM is not setup the way you wnat it then it may cost more in the end.

  3. I spoke with a CS rep today to get a new firing pin and spring. Bad connection but initially I thought she said it/they were restricted parts, but after some time on hold she said she could send me the pin but not the spring as it was a "restricted part". I am way Pis#$%-off now. While my spring will still work, I would like a new one but can't find a source. Brownells has springs for a 12gs 500 and that's all I have found.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    David E.

  4. That said I would still like to remain in the Limited division and I have one problem - a ported Mossberg 930 barrel. It's a 24" 'turkey' gun and Mossberg WILL make a non-ported barrel for $180 (I'm not the only one asking!) but my question is - to remain cost effective can the porting on my current barrel be defeated (covered) to neutralize the affect? I'm thinking aluminum sheeting and hose clamps - or better if this is possible.

I'm guessing "NO" but I thought it was worth asking.

I've been running mine with port covers for a little over a year now, no problems with reliability/function.

Are they legal? I have not seen any rules limiting external modifications to shotguns and if the ports are rendered inoperable and the configuration is not changed during the match then?

While I haven’t volunteered the information to any ROs, MDs or other match staff, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell them. I shot the AR-15 PRO/AM match with this setup.

If you have some matches in mind just email the MDs and ask beforehand.

Now if the port covers came off during a match I would expect to be placed in OPEN.

  5. Fine tuned my AR loads; 68gr BTHP Hornady and 55gr FMJBT Hornady bulk same POI at both 200yds (my scope zero) and 400yds.

Sunday, club level 3 GUN, ran the match, shot OK, missed a shotgun steel forcing a reload. Note to self; when missing with a shotgun forces a reload, especially an empty gun reload, don't miss!!!

    CrossFit and diet on track.

  6. I have a 930 turkey and the end of the pin the hammer strikes is mushrooming. It measures .137 compared to .127 where it isn't mushroomed. I think I'm going to get Mossberg to send me a new one but I am going to just watch and keep measuring mine to see if it continues or stays where it is. With as many rounds as some have put through their guns I think it must just mushroom a little and then stop. Also, my firing pin spring had a sharp bend on one end.

  7. It's a competition with known rules.

Failure to enforce those rules affects the outcome.

I know I want the outcome of every match I shoot to be based on my performance (time-penalties).

The time part is easy, but the penalties part can be affected by the RO, which is not what I want. My experience is more with IDPA where the SO can really impact the outcome.

I don't think ROs are seen as good/bad when they make hard calls supported by the rules as long as they are professional, treat all shooters the same and with respect.

If I wanted to compete in a judged competition I would enter a beauty pageant.

  8. Man, that is awesome. I hope you stick to it. I can tell you it won't ever get boring, only more addictive. I'm at it for almost 11 months now. 142 pounds lighter.

    Thanks,

I have been watching your posts/progress-142lbs!!!!!! you rock!!!!! ; between you and the "Killing The Fat Man" on CrossFit.com, I finally decieded to do it!

Open Gym yesterday, kind of lost, first Group workout today at 4pm, can't wait! The problem now is juggling CrossFit with range time.

So thanks for being an inspiration and posting.

    David E.

  9. My loads with the same POI at 200 from a 16" 1:9

    24.2 TAC 68 Hornady BTHP

    24.8 TAC 55 Hornady FMJBT(bulk)

These are a little light but also match the Hornady Steel Match 55gr ammo.

I have and use a chrono but I found that of little use when trying to match a load to a BDC and match different gr loads.

  10. I started CrossFit yesterday with a 1 hr intro class. Just going through the lifting movements with PVC, empty bar or very light weight. Way sore today! I started dieting (mostly The Zone) the first week of May weighed 225. Yesterday I weighed 215lbs. With a previous ruptured disc, "form" is the highest priority for me. I’m 52 and never really have stuck with any exercise program, I think because the workouts differ almost every day it won’t be boring.

  11. Friday I ran the Keith G’s shotgun drill, just under 15.61 second. .84 time to first shot, 4.40 reload,.36 split, 4.58 reload, .28 split, 5.75 reload. I have a videos and will post after uploading to youtube. Tuff to get three good loads in a row. Plan to test once a month until AR 15 match and see how much time I can cut off. I also did some shot to shot load 4 drills 3.7 shot to shot was my best.

Sat did some .22(conversion) and .223 close rifle practice on some FNH pizza targets. Splits using the .22 were .18 - .22 and surprisingly my splits with .223 were about the same. 5 targets, V shape at 10yds, 20yds, and 30 yds. Trying to see if there are benefits to taking 1 vs. 2 shots. While 1 is faster the consequence of missing an “A” is pretty high vs. taking a little longer to take 2 anywhere. I also walked into a "Buffalo shoot" at my new gun club on the rifle range. Basically shooting at a steel Buffalo (maybe 24" hump to chest) at 400yds off-hand in 5 round runs. First run 3 for 5, got in the shoot off, missed on the first shot/lost. So now I wondering what MOA target I should be able to hit for each shooting position (without too many misses or taking forever.

Sunday, CrossFit intro class one-on-one. Man am I going to be sore and I didn’t even do the WOD. 1 May weighed 225, today 215 after 2 ½ weeks on mostly the Zone diet.

My BP was down 116/61 after workout/lunch. Not sure why it’s so low.

I’m “ALL-IN” for the next three months on the workout, diet, practice to get ready for my first major match, AR-15 PRO/AM.

  12. Dan,

Thanks for the offer on the 2011, still might take you up on it when I get to a USPSA match up your way.

I had a good local match last night;8 stages, 4 down zero, 2 down one, last two stages were down millions(9 each). Need practice on movers. Accuracy much better after dry fire, paying attention to trigger reset, striving for down zero. Finished 1st in SSP, 2nd overall with 4 MAs shooting the match.

Day off today, Cross Fit app 8:45, been starving for a week now, felt lighter on my feet last night at the match. Plan to practice with swinger today. Record my baseline on the shotgun loading challenge. And this weekend some rifle at the FNH 3 gun targets. Want to also compare my accuracy at 300/400 yards using 1x vice 3x on my Leopold CQT, considering buying a Priz and shooting TI (Crazy).

  13. Long time no entries.

Disappointing performance in the West Point Match in March. Poor pistol skills and being out of shape killed me.

    Since then:

    1. I am a member of a new local club with a 400 yd rifle range and have my rifle load and zero working good 0-400yds.

    2. Just recently have my G34 trigger the best it has ever been with a Vanek Classic, over travel stop and a Lone Wolf lightened Striker.

    3. Working on shotgun reloading, have done some dry fire and will be base lining my skills with Keith G's challenge this weekend. Also working on grabbing 5-6 shells for weak hand reload. 5 shells are as easy for me to grab/handle as 4. Still working on grabbing 6 but the fumble factor and slower loading of the first shell or 2 might make this not worth it. It would be nice to have a shell holder that groups the shells in a bunch vice a string as they end up bunched in the hand anyway.

    4. Also working on my own weapon transition drill: Plate rack, rifle loaded on table (.22lr conversion), shotgun loaded on table, pistol loaded/holstered. One step between weapons. Beep, table start rifle, 2 plates, safe rifle and dump on table, shotgun 2 plates safe on table, pistol 2 plates. Started out in the 11-12 second range, best time to date is 8.99; the pistol is holding me up. Plate rack at 18yds.

    5. Struggled with my weight on and off my whole life, starting CrossFit next week.

My focus has changed from "getting in a shoot-off" to putting in the time and effort to perform at my very best in the AR-15 PRO/AM, FNH and BRM3G matches. Setting a new rule for shooting any match; I cant/wont shoot a match unless I have practiced/improved something since the last match!I just want to see where I fall out in the Semi-pro rankings.

  14. Um, David E., gotta correct you on this one. For the safety of all during the coming apocalypse

Granted, Zombieland Rule #2 is The Double Tap but it really isn't specific on what to hit.

The rules clearly state a shot to the head is required for zombies ZSA Rules. Though a double tap to the head would good to be 100% sure.

More importatly, the infected "not yet turned" get three to the body with two hits "C" or above. A double tap is insuficient and will create a walker which incurs a 10 second penalty. A double, double tap would be good for these.

This public service announcement has been brought to you by Daves Not Here (Zombie Shooters Association of America #029NC) Yup, card carrying member.

And they say what we're do is a "game".

    Anyone want a twinkie?

You exposed me, I'm just a poser Zombie hunter.

  15. I have an ARMLITE 16" middy upper, 1:9 twist.

I load 68gr Hornady BTHP with 25.0 gr RAMSHOT TAC OAL 2.260"

This load gives me about 1.5 MOA or better and matches (verified at the range) my Leupold CM-R2 BDC out to 400 yds (matches the BDC calculator out to 500yds). I use Lee 223 dies and use the Factory Crimp Die set lightly. I entertained trying to get 5.56 specific dies (don't know if there is such a thing) but these results are good enough.

The 25.0 (25.4 MAX) is listed under the NATO loading (69gr SMK) vice the 223 loading as the limit there is 24.2

I have loaded them at 24.2 and there is no real different between the 24.2 and 25.0 accuracy wise.

I tried 75gr Hornady steel match and the groups opened up, same results with 75gr hand loads.

I'm not as worried about wind as I am hitting reactive steel targets with a little more weight.

My other load is the Hornady 55gr FMJBT (Bulk) 25.0gr TAC which has about the same POI at 200 as the 68gr.

So I shoot the 55's out to 200-300, and the 68's whenever there is steel or >300.

  16. I have the AA that I use on a GEN 3 34. It seems to work better after taking the sharp edges off the stamped steel piece that the barrel links with, or it's just broken in. The one problem I have is that I use an over travel stop and have to back it out 1 1/2 turns to get the AA striker to release. Thinking about getting a dedicated G17 for the AA conversion.

    David E.

  17. The only other thing can I think of is that I wasn't shooting at 4x, which the reticle output from the app is based on.

I was going to ask that very question on your other thread but thought, he knows that.

So yes, the only time the reticle will work is at the designed power (second focal plane), which is I think 4X on the XTR.

I shoot a 16" and count on 300 - 400 FPS loss from manufacturer data, so 2800 FPS is not out of the question.

One last bit of advice, use the 200 yard mark and zero at 200, your 100 will be close enough and your 300, 400 will be beter. Also run the calculator with a 200 zero and see if that improves your 300, 400 marks.

    David E.

  18. While I simply do not have the depth of experience of Kurt, the "optional" stages seem to be more geared of chosing pistol and shotgun, rifle wasn't a good option. Blue Ridge had a stage that for me, was better with pistol, Rocky Mountain, had a stage that was better for shotgun. You have to look at the individual stage, your equipment and your ability with said equipment, and decide on the spot.

    Thanks all, Dan

So with my pistol skills, I will most likely be running the shotgun dry first at preferably the longer steel then going to the pistol.

    .

    .

    .

Or maybe with my recent pistol performance maybe reloading the shotgun might be an option.

    David E.

  19. Ron,

Thanks, more to it than it first appears.

I guess for a more experiecned shooter the dry-run timer idea can be a big help.

I think my next step is to figure out at what distance the rifle overtakes the pistol for a all "A"s on paper and then see if it's different for 2 hits anywhere.

Yes, I shoot tactical but use a 9mm with 140mm mags so 23 rds at the start.

So from what you are saying, I either s&*k with pistol or an open gun/dot makes a big difference. I've never shot open.

    Thanks,

    David

  20. When you are given the choice of which weapon to use, what does your choice depend on?

For stages where the weapon choice is up to the shooter, besides prohibited targets such as no steel with a rifle closer than 100 yards, and you must use all three, how do you decide?

I was practicing weapon transitions on a plate rack at about 17 yds. Rifle (22 conversion) was easily the fastest, maybe 3-4 second runs from a table start. Shotgun next, maybe 5-6 second? Pistol last, maybe 6-8? I could be wrong about the times as I didn't write them down.

So it seems that I would always choose the rifle when given the choice, except for flying targets.

I heard the first FNH pro match was designed this way and I think the BRM3G is also.

I think the only time my pistol would win over the rifle would be at very short distances, maybe 10 ft?

    Is there a strategy?

    Thanks,

    David E.

  21. Why is an extended chock a must? I will be looking for a LM, but why extended? Just for the ease of changing?

    1. Yes for the ease of changing. Imagine the setup in post #3 with a flush choke, theres a good chance the tool will hit the mag tube and so you would be turning it about 1/4 turn at a time until you could turn by hand.

    2. Many extended chokes are marked on the extended portion allowing you to verify the choke without removing.

    3. To add to #1, you don't want to be wasting time changing chokes when you could be going over your stage plan. The less you have to do between stages=more time thinking/ rehearsing the stage.

    4. There may be times after seeing another shooter struggle with some heavy steel that you deciede you want a tighter choke, with the extended choke you possibly have the time to change before your on deck.
