  1. I have issues when I load lead bullets with wax build up inside seating die and causing issues with OAL. I don't have Dillon dies for my 38 spl, which I may end up getting. For now I have RCBS cowboy dies that I had before getting the 650, and it is a pain to pull the seating die out every 100-200 rounds to clean, then having to reset.....

Any thoughts on what you all do, and what a good solvent is for bullet lube?

    Thanks

  2. I recently won a SDB in 45 C.

I reload for cowboy shooting on a 650, as well as lots of other calibers. I am considering keeping the SDB to reload my cowboy loads, but have a question regarding the style of the dies. I use Dillon dies on my 650 for the cowboy loads, and really like them because I cast and lube my own bullets and end up having to clean the seat and crimp die fairly often.

My question is: Do the SDB dies have drop free inserts like the standard dies? (I don't want to open the box in case I end up selling it and can't tell from the picture on the Dillon website)

    Thanks for your time

  3. I have a MEC 600, and reload for cowboy shooting (black powder shot shells). I used to reload on it for sporting clays etc, but determined that it just wasn't cost effective. In fact when I quit I could actually buy Rem gun club 12 ga (or 20 ga) for less than it cost to reload! And that was before lead went out of control - of course ammo prices have gone way up as well. (I was paying $3.15/box).

MEC makes a number of different presses (auto indexing 9000G vs the 600 series etc). If I wanted to be able to reload multiple gauges I would probably buy a 9000 for the one I shoot most, and one of the 600 or JR's for the other gauges.

  4. I've been installing a lot of the Weigand blades lately. I particularly like the .140" notch version.

Everybody knows I like the Millett unit the best of any revolver rear sight. But the Weigand blade gives a nice sight picture, and the one I installed on my 646 over 5 years ago is holding up just fine.

The LPA is a good quality sight, but too expensive for what it is. Plus the notch is way too narrow.

Mike - do you feel the Weigand can be installed easily, or does it require a gun smith? Also, I asked about the fiber optic front when you did my 625, but dumb me forgot what you recommended (and I didn't have you do it for me).

    Thanks

  5. We have the competition cowboy by Marlin in 38/357. We needed no change to load 10 rounds (never tried more as that is the limit for CAS (SASS))

My girlfriend shoots one and it has been flawless since purchase. (I shoot a 1892 clone which I love) The only thing we had done to the Marlin was to have the safety spring weakened slightly - this is the one that requires the lever to be all the way up - the problem we had was when loading or with a loaded rifle - the lever would spring open part way.

I highly recommend either the Marlin or one of the 1892 clones (Rossi etc). There is a smith here in the states that smooths it out and makes it run flawlessly (stevezguns.com I think or something like that)

    Good luck

  6. I recently mounted a Docter optic on my Kimber team match to use for some plate shooting. I have a major problem, the sight keeps going out.

Put loaded mag in gun, rack and fire a shot - sight goes out.

Drop mag, rack to unload cyclinder - sight back

Any ideas? (other then go witha C-more - I already had this Docter optic and didn't have any issues with it before when it was mounted on top of an ACOG)

    Thanks for the help

  7. Are there any restrictions for shipping ammo to the S&W range? I will be purchasing it from an online store and ask them to deliver it at the S&W shooting range in MA for the competition.

    Thanks,

    Rodrigo

I would definitely check with the vendor, as many will not ship to MA, due to crazy laws.

If that becomes and issue, you can probably find somebody in the area (like in CT) that is also going to the match (unfortunately I am not)

  8. I just purchased a Rem700 VTR with the X Mark trigger. From the factory it read ~5 lbs with my digital trigger pull gage, even though the it says 3 1/2 lbs from factory.

I adjusted it down to about 3 lbs, but found that the adjustment hex screw interfers with my trigger finger (at least feels that way).

Any thoughts or experiences with this trigger?

Should I just bite the bullet and get a Jewel or other drop in trigger?

    Thanks

    John
