To Shred's point I have now seen two pistols come into the shop in the last 6 months with pitting around the firing pin due to most likely small rifle primer use with minor loads.  On one gun I think it was only 600 rounds or so, but I am convinced that some small commercial reloaders have been loading with small rifle primers in pistol ammo if that is all they have.  One of the owners told me that he used small rifle primers shooting minor (no I didn't ask what the load was).   Years ago I used small rifle primers during a shortage with minor steel challenge loads and had the ring of pitting around my firing pin on my 2011 slide.  I was told by the smartest shooters I knew at the time in my area that it was no problem.  My gunsmith knew what it was immediately and told me to quit doing it.

I know that primers have been hard to find and understand why everyone uses them.

All I can say is on some minor loads the primer cup will not have enough pressure to seal between it and the case, and the gas will start eroding some breech faces.   The cups on the small rifle primers have to handle +60,000 PSI in the rifles, and are tougher than the pistol cups.

If your combo is not pitting your breechface then go for it.  I know lots of people shooting major .40 have used small rifle for years in their open guns and major loads with no issues.

    What brand, Winchester?

  2. Every once in awhile I run into a case that’s too long. Here’s a S&B 9mm that’s grossly out of spec. But rather than trim, I just throw them in the dumpster.
The photo below is actually one that's was too short....I guess I threw the long one away already.

  3. The U die is not meant to resurrect garbage brass. And as depicted in the photo, can make it even worse.
It's purpose is to size the case 2 or 3 thousandths below SAAMI specification so ammunition will feed in a tight chamber.
In rare instances, it may improve neck tension but only in cases that are thin walled.
Brass is the least expensive component of reloading. I don't understand why people are hell bent on using every single piece they scrounge off the ground.

I read in the roll sizer manual the undersized die are “not needed” after roll sizing, but is there disadvantage to using a U die after roll sizing? Like I mentioned above I like the U die for no set back in major loads. Thanks for any input you have

They are not required and can cause reliability and feeding problems. Furthermore, the use of undersized dies with rollsized cases can create ammunition below SAAMI specifications which can also be unsafe.  This isn't an opinion or a testimonial.  It's what the manufacturer printed in their manuals.

Will a 147gr be noticeably less snappy in a SP101? Shooting 124gr in my SP101 they feel stronger than in my S&W 986 which is negligible.

At first glance I thought you were asking about a CZ. I see now it's a Ruger.
