  1. Yeah. Swapping uppers looks like the ticket--especially for running in 3 Gun where power factor may or may not be relevant depending on who is making the rules.

Or I could just win the lottery.

I've been playing swap uppers with my AR's for a long time. So glad you folks enlightened me on the wonderful world of 2011s!

  2. +1 on that observation Charles! Getting one's hands on some models Vortex offers is the biggest draw back I've seen with their products.

IOR Valdada offers some great stuff in the 1-higher magnification scopes. Scott, from Liberty Optics, is of the opinion that IOR has really improved the internals of their scopes recently.

Maybe give them a look? Pricey--but not as pricey as Leupold!

  3. Has anyone out there had a chance to compare the Meopta and the Vortex? Reticle styles are mostly personal preference, so I'm mostly interested in features that bear on optical quality and especially durability.

I own, and like, the K-Dot, but the Vortex VIP warranty is absolutely fantastic. In addition, a new Vortex runs about a hundred bucks less than a used K-Dot.

    So, let's hear it.

  4. Get some Vibrams Five Fingers, take your time getting used to them, never look back. I have never felt so good running as I have since I started using these. I have done my fair share of running too.

The five fingers are a good choice for running and general fitness. I like the added proprioception the thin soles offer.

    +1&2 on Vibrams

Vibrams or great for fitness and everyday use. You will bring out your full potental in agility and speed with vibrams. If you dont like vibrams i would recommend any quality running shoe with a minimulist sole. Merrell make some really good running shoesmerrell running shoes

When all else fails there nothing better than running barefoot

If you like the minimalist style, take a look at Innov8. I bought a pair, and LOVE them. Very light, durable and agile. I got the Roclite 400 gortex "boots". Perfect for trail running and USPA matches!

  5. Cottage cheese at night, and whey protein during workouts.

There is an awful lot to post workout recovery, but to the extent you are interested in the role of protein in the process, I really like this article:

    http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/11/10/do-you-secretly-suspect-that-something-is-wrong-with-your-protein-supplement.aspx

It's more in depth than most will be interested in, but it's good. If you want a source for good quality whey protein (raw, grass fed, organic, etc.) try Vital Whey through Azure Standard. It's still a bit pricey, but less than Mercola's (admittedly excellent) stuff.

  6. If you like the paleo approach, anything by Loren Cordain is good. He is the "father" of the paleo diet. Dr. Mercola's website has an weath of information--almost overwhelming really. Mark's Daily Apple is a good email newsletter to subscribe to.

  7. Great post topic.

As carbs go, the type/quality of carb does appear relevant--although quantity certainly is critical. From what I've been reading, fructose is the carb source to limit: 15-25 grams per day even from fruit sources.

  8. Check out "Peak 8" training. Google peak 8 and a wealth of good info will pop up.

In a nut shell, you get on your bike (stationary or otherwise), eliptical--or whatever--and go as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Then rest for 90 seconds. Repeat for eight cycles. My wife dropped 5 pounds in a week using this method.

This is just one version of sprint interval training that studies are showing is fantastic for weight loss and fitness in general.

Good luck! And feel free to pm me with any questions.

  9. Dr. Mercola has a ton of good information on supplements. From what I can gather, a good quality krill oil would be number one on my list. Vitacost is a very good source for reasonably priced, good quality supplements. Vitamin D is probably the number one most important vitamin--and there is simply no supplement that will do a very good job of giving you what you need. You pretty much have to get vitamin D from exposure to sunlight! I think Mercola's vitamin D supplement is as good as you get though.

  10. I've been working the paleo diet--though not strictly or religiously--for years now. Corey's description captures the diet in a nutshell. Diabetics are having excellent results going paleo.

Dr. Mercola (mercola.com) adopts much of the paleo diet theory--but does advocate use of dairy as long as you can get it raw. Mercola also advocates drastically limiting fructose intake--including fructose from fruit--to 15 to 25 grams per day.

If you can manage to get most of the gluten and sugar out of your diet, you'll be well on your way.

  11. What he says . . . indeed.

OK SV-COP, that sheds some light on the issue. The treatment should add significantly to barrel life of handgun barrels.

A couple questions to follow up: first, could the SV TiN process be used on rifle barrels? Second, how does the nitride process that Loki uses differ from the TiN process that SV uses?

    Thanks for the input!
