  1. And finally to Travis & Eric,

I cannot tell you how nice it was not shooting by the illumination of headlights and getting us all of us out and on the drive back before night fall all three days, an accomplishment you can truly be proud of.

This x 1,000! Please duplicate this year's format for next year & beyond! And thank you again to the entire Gibson clan, ROs, and sponsors.

  2. How bout we have 2 nights, 1 for each match? I would propose Monday and Friday night. I can collect small donations while I am at Stage 3 to help buy the food and drinks? Could take donations at the BBQ itself?

I'd suggest Tuesday and Saturday nights instead. Speaking for myself I'll be in more of a mindset for BBQ/ meet & greet after the match is over.

  3. It's excellent. I own one and use it a lot as part of a general weight training program. You don't have to be uber fit to use it.

One of its advantages is its use while traveling. Bodyweight exercises usually don't target the posterior chain (back, hams, etc) that well so the TRX fills the gap. You can use the TRX to make an exercise as easy or tough as you need per your fitness level.

  4. I heard it yrs ago that if you hang with a certain skill level crowd you will rise no higher than the crowd, which is fine ifthat is your thing, butf orthose who want to excell to the maximum oftheir abilities??? need to look beyond the comfort zone/squad

Recently I heard a similar concept explained as, "You are the average of the five people you hang around with most."

Interesting to ponder that, for both shooting and non-shooting aspects of life.

  5. Federal 00Buck Magnum 12 pellet

1290 FPS (copper plated because I care about the enviorment.)

Spinners over in two shots . . every time

And travis did say that 00Buck was not nessesarly needed . . . this stuff did not hurt to have along. . . and it did help on some of thoses long plate racks and to get thoses spinners over in two.. . .on the limited vickers stage it worked just fine for the steel as I knew if i got close it would go over and or fall with out a follow up shot. just my opinion . . . but it wiorked for me.

I'm torn on the plate rack. They went down with 00 of course but seemed to go down just fine with #6 too. Spinners, yeah, 00 rules.

  6. I can't comment on Ahimsa, as that is a specific Hindu/Buddhist/Jain (and somewhat Christian) philosophy. However, as for Zen specifically, there is significant crossover in practice between it and the Martial Arts.

  7. When learning hold the beginner's mind. Parks commentary from Total Control, “A beginners mind can also be described as living in possibility as opposed to expectation. Reality has a way of shaping itself to your pre-conceived expectations don’t give it the opportunity to limit you learning by deciding you already know how to do something.”

I was taught something similar, almost a corollary to this, when I started learning how to shoot. I was taught, "be task oriented, not goal oriented" when learning / doing a new procedure (such as reloading a shotgun). The point was that being goal oriented in such a procedure takes you out of the moment where you are, losing your awareness if you will, and makes you anxious to be at some point in the future...often with disastrous results.

  8. The sport of shooting is a game, but it has applications that can be real.

Profoundly true. I am rediscovering now the lessons of Zen I had learned while studying martial arts years ago.

  9. Because the reason we call it the dominant eye is that it's either slightly or considerably stronger than the non-dominant eye. It's able to focus better, to bring things into sharper sight in less time, to switch focus in and out faster. That's the eye want to be using to do our aiming.

Good point. I recently found that my (non dominant) right eye has slight astigmatism, which isn't apparent until I am aiming at targets beyond 100 yds. Clearly my brain decided a while ago that since my left eye sees better, it'll be the dominant eye.

I will begin giving the turn-your-head-slightly approach a try and see if it is better.

  10. I started to notice the difference in how the front sight tracks with each grip. With thumbs forward it tends to come back down close to target if I don't do anything with the rest of my body to disturb it. With my thumbs locked down it seemed like the sight would settle above target and require additional, manual correction to bring it back down to target.

FWIW, I have noticed the same thing in my current journey away from the thumbs-up "combat" grip to the BE grip. My sights now come back to the same place more consistently than before. And thanks for creating this thread as I've learned a lot as a lurker.

Also -- and I know this is entirely beside your main point here -- for your carry guns you might look into using AGrip instead of grip tape. Agrip is softer, more like suede and won't tear your clothes up, yet provides a surer grip.

  11. Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster here, so go easy ^_^

I'm the same as many here: right hand/left eye, but my solution seems to differ from those posed above. My solution is simply to close my left eye during the draw and shot. It's an automatic and consistent action, I have usually shot in the top 5-10% in the gun course skills tests I have taken. (I haven't taken the USPSA qualifier yet so I don't know my Class)

Closing the left eye has some problems, the worst of which I have found is that by closing one eye, the right eyelid sort of gets "squished" down too (parasympathetic response?). This seems to result in my sometimes not seeing the FS lift; my logic being that since the right eye is somewhat closed, it's just that much easier to blink during recoil.

Shooting rifle though, I have begun recently experimenting with switch to firing left side, and I find this especially helpful for long shots.

I'm tossing this out as another option, but also to get feedback from those with more experience than I have.
