  1. I personally prefer the lighter moving parts, but you need adjustable gas system to have any advantage of them! I have taken all the weights out of the buffer tube and run a lightened carrier. But there's also one thing. How you hold your rifle. With light weight internals, if you just hold it tight, it will be super fast to shoot.

  2. Well, during last summer I was in local nationals as patcher, shooting the prematch. Before a stage i think I'd just top off a half full mag from last COF. Because it was only 16 rounds, i thought i wouldn´t need a spare mag. The first error. On top of that, I managed to put 31 rounds in the mag - and the start condition was chamber empty, bolt forward, mag in your hand. I had to beat the gun against the ground pretty hard to make the mag seat in the gun. After 12 rounds or so, the floor plate and all the rest fell off. What a perfect way to ruin a stage!

  3. Well, here's another one. I really like the feel of the ErgoGrip with the SureGrip surface, but I also think that the grip is a bit too narrow. So i went with a Magpul MOE and finally decided to mod it a bit.

Heres what you need: a small piece of bicycle inner tube and the grip.

  4. Yeah, and tell JP to put a tank brake on that thing... I was earing both ear muffs and plugs and was RO'ing a friend shooting with a L1A1 that had barrel chopped to 16" and a tank brake.. Had to take several steps back from where i normally was, for people shooting .223 ARs with tank brakes, to be in the comfort zone. Man that thing was LOUD!

  5. Oh yeah, i forgot - If youy are really into 3gun, you are gonna do probably all the mods i just said - why not to get id done correctly the first time and not to swap part here, and part there once in a while (I hope i had done it that way...)

  6. The STI rifle is far from perfect - it doesn't have a rifle length gas system, or adjustable gas system and the grips is standard A2, for christ sake! I'd say buy any lower, nice trigger (To me, jard is the best, and the installation isn't that bad after you watch the video from youtube), stock that suits you, I prefer A2 of ace ARFX and add a upper. If you really want to know your gun, build it yourself - I did that, and I hadn't even held a AR before. I'll put up a list of parts that you need (they are from brownells, but can be had cheaper if you shop around, and dont forget the brownells' "everyone's a dealer" - discount).

    Lower - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=56222/sku/Stripped_AR_15_Lower_Receiver

    Lower Parts kit - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26400/Product/AR_15_LOWER_RECEIVER_PARTS_KIT

Buffer tube, buffer and spring: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27315/Product/AR_15_M16_STOCK_COMPLETION_KITS (The a2 model

    Stock: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=16910/Product/AR_15_ARFX_SKELETON_STOCK

    Trigger - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1466/Product/AR_15_AR_CUSTOM_TRIGGER_KIT (the .154", 2 lb. Trigger Kit)

    Grip - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26656/Product/AR_15_M16_MOE_trade__GRIPhttp://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26656/Product/AR_15_M16_MOE_trade__GRIP

With brownells discount, that comes out to 390.49 for lower, with a really nice trigger and good grip. Of course you may want a different stock and grip, but once you have tried a jard trigger, you cant stand the standard ones.

    Upper - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=13031/sku/Lo_Pro

    Barrel - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=12974/sku/AR_15_M16_Barrel__BL_10

Adjustable gas system - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=7592/Product/AR_15_M16_ADJUSTABLE_GAS_BLOCK (you want the standard version if shooting with optics, a2 if using irons)

    Handguards - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=5585/Product/AR_15_M16_FREE_FLOAT_TUBE

Comp - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27074/Product/AR_15_M16_BENNIE_COOLEY_TACTICAL_COMPENSATOR (you want the Standard .750" Comp, Black)

    Bolt - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=20909/Product/AR_15_BOLT_ASSEMBLY

    Carrier & completion kit - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=31697/Product/AR_15_M16_BOLT_CARRIER_COMPLETION_KIT and http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=48335/sku/JPBC_3_Low_Mass_Bolt_Carrier

    Gas tube & roll pin - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=42558/sku/Gas_Tube__Standard and http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=17538/Product/GAS_TUBE_ROLL_PIN

    Charging handle: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=32076/Product/AR_15_M16_BCM_GUNFIGHTER_CHARGING_HANDLE

With the discount, it comes to about 800

So for 1200 you have a full blown match rifle - I'd also take the weights out of the buffer to make it even lighter than the JP LMOS buffer. If you want irons, add about 200 for the price of a2 adjustable gas block, front sight (I'd take the national match version from armalite), front sight detent, detent spring and a carry handle. I'll list the needed parts here - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=1197/pid=254/sku/National_Match_Front_Sight http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=24031/Product/FRONT_SIGHT_DETENT http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=24032/Product/FRONT_SIGHT_DETENT_SPRING and http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=5567/Product/AR_15_DETACHABLE_CARRY_HANDLE

  7. None whatsoever that i can notice. I used a bit of red locktite on it after adjusting it. (I adjusted when it was -15C outside, so during summer it will be a bit overgassed, but IT WILL WORK, and that's the most important thing. Reliability, reliability, reliability).

  8. Yeah. Less weight on moving parts and adjustable gas system = less recoil. Just by taking the weights out of the buffer you get 100g or 3.5oz less mass in the moving parts. Cost - zero. And I've put on a post that shows how to make a adjustable gas system out of a normal FSB with just angle grinder and drill press.

  9. In my opinion ...it does matter

When shooting for the best group you can get, you try to remove as many variables from the equasion as possible.

This is your own body signature and any other object that touches the gun...your trigger may also be activated remotely.

When you interface to the gun, most of your body signature is in the stock and grip...(or the lower)

Play between those parts and the upper..create a variable that you have no control over.

Precision bolt rifle builders, for decades have known how important bedding a stock to the action is in respect to accuracy.

Think about it...on a bolt gun the optic is mounted to the barreled reciever, so would play between the action and stock matter?

Yes it does! and in a pretty big way, why would an AR be any different?

There is no doubt a skilled shooter may shoot a good group off of a bench with a loose rifle, but that is a very controled situation.

He may have a rest and bags ...or what not, and plenty of time to set it all up.

In the real world is where the short coming will show up the most

Like driving a car with worn steering...a reduction of precise control.

    Jim

Comparing AR to bolt rifle with bedding doesn't make any sense. The fundamentals are too different. Like someone said, tightening the fit wont affect accuracy. But if it bothers you, it might be a good idea. Just because you worry something is going to make you shoot less accurately, it probably will...

  10. Forgot to mention, I think i will keep this as a practice method. Really learned a few things about tracking my sights. Though I have a Millett DMS-1 on order, it's never bad to learn something new. And I think I got what Jerry Miculek means what he says that the front sight is his throttle. I think I will also use this with a pistol, as there isn't that ding from steel targets, and I've got some problems with steel. Comments welcome.
