  1. Steve and I would like to congratulate our 16-year-old daughter, Sarah (the other half of my Sue and Sarah moniker) on the 91% "Madness" classifier she shot tonight. It was an awesome thing to watch. If the Ohio calulator is right, she will make A class when they are updated next month. She will be the first A class female in Michigan. Have there been other junior A class girls in the past?

    CONGRATS, SARAH...YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!! :)

    Mom and Dad

    (Sue and Steve)

Congrats. Could we have a contender for the first female GM in a year or two?

  2. Tried out my new steel plates today, but didn't take into account the wind when I repainted targets. As a result, my nice new ionbonded Limited gun now has a fine mist of white paint on one side and the top of the slide.

If I use nail polish remover, paint thinner, gas, or kerosene to remove the paint, will the solvent damage the ionbond?

  3. Thanks for the replies. You've given me a few ideas. But in response to some of the questions:

    1) I am new to reloading and to the 550b. To date, I've reloaded around 100 rounds.

    2) I'm loading .40 w/new Starline brass, Montana Gold 180gr FMJ, CCI small pistol primers, and Clays powder.

    3) I've backed off the crimping die as much as I think I can, but I will double check that.

Here's my loads and results so far:

Shot over Pal Chrono at 10-15'

    FPS PF

Date Temp Gun PowderCharge Bullet wght OAL Hi Low Avg Hi Low Avg

    1/22/2009 35 6" Clays 3 MGFMJ 180 1.125 840 762 784 151 137 141

FWIW, here's what I got on the commercial loads (all .40) I checked:

    48 6" Precision Delta 180 1029 989 1029 185.22

  4. When I chrono commercial loads, I generally find a 30-40 fps range between high and low in any 10 rounds. As I work up my first load on my new 550b, I'm seeing a 80-100 fps range in any 10 rounds.

By the same token, when I check my powder charges, I'll find that 1 in 3 rounds is .1 grains low or high. i.e. if I'm working on 4.6 grains, I'll find 4.6, 4.6, 4.7, 4.6, etc.

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

  5. I learned today that Mr. Alessi lost his battle with cancer. My prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.

That's a shame. I have an ankle holster of his. VERY nice work. My condolences.

  6. Hello: I was just wondering what people are using to go to out of town matches? I have been using a 2004 Mini Cooper S since it is easy on fuel. Is anyone else using gas miser vehicles or am I the only one? Thinking of a diesel next. Let me know what you are using. Thanks, Eric

  7. I drive a Jeep Liberty (gas). Absolute worst gas mileage in its class. 17-18 mpg is the best it will get. I do not recommend the (gas) version to anyone. With that said, I do like the vehicle a lot,... just wish I'd have purchased the diesel version. Diesel is more expensive per gallon, what is your $ per mile on the diesel version?

I had a great experience with my gas Liberty. That's why I bought the diesel and gave my old Liberty to my son to take to college. Both have held up well on the farm, been comfortable on the highway, and reliable. At a price tag between $20K and $30K, that's not too shabby.

See post above for current comparison in cost, also note that diesel and gas prices fluctuate in relation to each other. In the past few years, I've seen diesel prices range from 30% over gas prices to 30% under. For the past year or so, its averaged between 20 and 25% higher, which still gives a $$$ advantage to diesel once mileage, maintenance, and service life is considered..

I don't burn a drop of gas when I go to matches - My Jeep Liberty burns diesel. I recommend it.

I was going to say the same thing only mine is a Dodge 2500. 21-23 mpg on the highway :D

30 MPG in the diesel liberty on the highway, 25 on the farm. I don't know why more people don't get on the diesel bandwagon.

because it is at least a buck more than gasoline here....

At the last station I filled up, gas was $1.69 and diesel was 2.09. That's a 24% difference. My diesel jeep gets 30 mpg, my gas jeep (both Liberties) gets 23. That's a 30% difference.

So, pay a 24% premium on fuel but pick up a 30% premium on mileage. Throw in reduced maintainence, increased longetivity, and increased trade-in value, and things work out. Plus, it wasn't THAT long ago that diesel was cheaper than gasoline. Prices fluctuate.

  11. Where can I get one? Now that would make a great pet...cute little bugger...

Rumor has it their skin is actually black and the fur is clear like a solar collector...dang nature is smart...will we ever listen?!

YA what do you do when IT growes "UP"? <_<

When it grows up, you don't need a gun for protection any more.

  12. It won't be counted, but it still will be listed. I think that's what people are saying...it shows up, but it won't be used to calculate an average. R,

I shot a zero on a classifier back in September and it was never listed...

I don't think they show zero classifiers.

Nope - zeros don't show up. Shot one last Spring, and it never made the list.

I haven't tried to make up for lack of sleep with energy drinks and strong coffee since. Now if I don't get a good night's sleep, I either stay home or shoot slower.

  13. I grew up in the midwest. Remember those ice storms. Not fondly. Although one of the strongest memories as a kid was standing outside and listening to the sounds of limbs cracking, breaking, and falling from the weight of the ice.
This past week's ice storm hurricane has produced a wide range of inconveniences: Widespread power outages, property damage, interruption of banking/mail/phone/internet services, etc. The national guard has been called in, and there is a defacto dusk to dawn curfew. To make things worse, we're hearing that it could be 6-8 weeks before power is restored.

Know what you're going through. Same poop. Different storm.

During Gustave there were 825,000 without electricity across Louisiana and Mississippi. Main problem there was that the main transmission lines took the hit. Once those were back online within a week a good chunk of the power was back on. As I recall from my youth, repairing lines from ice damage is a lot tougher than from wind damage. It was literally door to door as the destruction was so complete. Linemen are a different breed. None of them should ever have to buy a beer in their life.

Hang in there. Stay safe. Stay warm.

I'm with you on the linemen. Doing the work they do in the conditions they do it, knowing that people's lives are literally depending on their performance puts them right up there in my book.

We have crews working from Texas and Louisiana. They are telling us that the damage from the ice storm is much worse than Katrina/Rita because the poles, lines, and transformers are literally shattered, and the supply lines are nearly all down.

They're making progress, and some of the larger towns are getting 50-90% eletctric service, but the country side is still almost 100% out of juice. Current estimates range from 3/1 to 4/1 to get the entire region back up and running.

This storm was a different animal. I've been through a half dozen or so major ice storms, and dozens that knocked out power for a day or less. But to have the whole region knocked out for weeks, with even basic services like banking, mail, and medical services crippled for days and recovery talk in months instead of days wor weeks is pretty sobering.

What is most interesting to me is that the phone and water companies managed to take only minor hits. A few water treatment/filtration plants went down, requiring boil water orders, but otherwise water service has remained good, even out in the rural areas. The phone system, both cell and land line have been remarkably stable.

I now have generators at home and at the office, and a laptop connect card for internet. Other than constant trips to the gas station, I'm in great shape.

  14. I find it very interesting that members will not hestiate to post questions like this on this forum and appear to do so rather than just sending an email ot NROI. Does anyone have a theory as to why this is the case? If members are fearful of asking John Amidon a stupid question that fear is misplaced since I ask them all of the time.

I'm glad they do. I've answered a lot of questions I didn't even know I had just by reading these threads!

All that is a big hassle, but the major problem is...... I had just almost dialed in my first load on my new Dillon 550 before the ice storm hit! I was going to be set for the summer with a couple cases of ammo tuned to my gun, and now I'm having to spend all my time just dealing with trivialities like food and heat.

    Dammit!

  16. I'm running 50/50 on Paras right out of the box. My 10 yr old P14.45 Ltd LDA (long story)has run like a charm sice the day I took it out of the box. My P1640TJ, supposedly designed to be an out of the box limited gun, took two trips each to Para and then to Bill Fender to get it to run consistently.

That said, once it was properly tuned, it ran great, but after paying a few hundred over the price of the base model P1640, I was annoyed to have to have it worked on repeatedly.

My now-well-tuned P16 runs on a par with my out of the box Ed Brown. Both of them have a sweet action, are very reliable, and are more accurate than I am. But neither of them run as well as my full custom gun from Jim Angill. Full custom from a good smith is on a whole 'nother level!

If someone was looking for an economical way to get into shooting Limited, I think Para's a viable option, but I'd buy a used or base model P16 and have a decent smith tune it instead of buying one of the LTD or "special" models. But you'd also have to take a good look at the STI Edge and see just how much you were really saving.
