What can I do better

Recommended Posts

Greetings, this is my first post, but I have been reading the forum for some time. I must say that I am quite impressed with the skill level of the shooters here. With that in mind, I would like some advice. During the early nineties I was an A level IPSC shooter. I shifted to IDPA in the mid-nineties. Wife, kids, work, etc. led to the demise of competitive shooting for a while. I am planning to get back into competitive shooting, with an emphasis on IDPA this summer. Competition is NOT my primary focus. I will be competing with my daily carry gear : Glock 19 (stock except the addition of Advantage Tactical sights), Minotaur M-Tac IWB holster, Comp-Tac 1.5 inch reinforced belt, 1 Minotaur concealment mag pouch, 2 Comp-Tac tec-lok mag pouches(ok, I don’t carry these but one reload won’t cut it for competition). All of my training, practice and competition shooting are done from concealment with an open front concealment garment, typically a light sports coat, sometimes a vest. Currently time and finances limit me to 1 range session per week. I am blessed when it comes to range facilities. I own a few acres not far from the house that have a suitable backstop. And I have set up a range there. I have four fixed targets on one section of the range spaced five yards apart laterally: at five yards I have an RTS self-healing torso target from Action Target, At 10, 15, and 25 yards I have Salute eight inch circle self-resetting targets and elevated bases. Every Saturday my training partner and I go to the range. Our range trip is divided into 3 sections:

First we shoot the following drills one time every week the times listed are my times from last Saturday’s session:

1. 5 shots at 25 yard target untimed

2. 1 yard Mozambique push out on RTS torso first shot from retention moving diagonally away from target First shot .87 sec split 1 .19 sec split 2 .26 sec total 1.32 sec

This 74 round course is followed by 75 – 100 round focused on a single objective. For example, this past week we were working on transitions from high probability to low probability targets. We fired 100 rounds on various drills where the draw was followed by shots at a big close target then transition to a small and or far target.

The third section of our weekly range session is close range dynamic scenarios using a really nifty moving target we built using a large RC car. These scenarios are usually related to the focused on skill. This past week we set up 6 scenarios where the moving target was engaged first at 0-5 yards while moving then a stationary target at 15-25 yards was engaged.

We shoot 200 rounds per range session. In addition to live fire I spend about thirty minutes a night doing either dry fire or airsoft training.

I have written this gargantuan post in order to ask 2 questions:

1. Given the impressive knowledge and experience represented in this forum, what suggestions do you have to make my training more efficient and or effective?

2. When looking at the posts concerning various training drills, most of the results posted seem to reflect the use of competition oriented equipment. How much difference does this make in terms of performance compared to the gear I’m using for you?

And though not really a question, I welcome comments and critiques concerning my performance (I may have deficiencies that I haven’t identified yet.

If you have read this post I thank you for your time.
