  1. I'm shooting my .260 on the bonus targets at Ironman this weekend and hope to have the 6mm barrels in hand next week, I'll make sure to get some pictures and take notes on the loads and groups. I'll be sure to give you a call Jesse if I run into problems!

    Doug

Been about a month and a half. Curious, any update on this?

  2. Yeah, the laws for antiques to allow them, but you have to take them to the police station every-so often for inspection and there are home inspections regularly as well (for all firearms). As far as I know, currently the issue with rifles is that ou have to have had a shotgun permit for a number of years before applying for the rifle.

Some of my wife's friends have told me that you can apply and it's just a matter of time, even if you've never had a permit. But I vaguely remember them saying you may need to take some type of test/questioner.

My son was just asking about wild boar as he also had some in Kagoshima when I wasn't there and he's going back next month to visit...he didn't know our cousin shot the wild boar...he has a long rifle, not a shotgun, but I think the family has had it for years going back even before the war.

Welcome to the boards here. I just got myself a Dillon press through Brian Enos.

  3. I've been told it's not actually that hard to get a rifle in Japan. My cousin lives in Kagoshima and killed a wild boar for New Years about 20 years ago...not sure what type of firearm he used, but it was a rifle. I have a set of Nikon binoculars that once belonged to my wife's Grandfather to spot birds in Kagoshima also...so I think several of the family are hunters.

I did live in Japan for about 5 years once upon a time...and had a friend in Tokyo that had an old Japanese revolver of some type that he said belonged to his Father. Evidently that was legal to own also.

For the most part people don't have firearms in Japan.

  4. Well, after much pondering I decided to go with the XL650.

My primary reason was that I wanted the auto-indexing and ability to have the powder check. Those seem like good safety, although I do trust myself to pay attention while loading, it just can't hurt to have more precaution that the 650 provides.

I honestly don't really need the extra volume and/or speed, so my decision wasn't based on that in any way. Just seems like a small price to pay for the convenience of what the 650 offers. I think it's fair to say we all get to make that decision for ourselves.

I only ordered one caliber, 308 to start, with the case feeder, which I didn't really need...but again, it's a convenience that is nice to have.

I just bought 400 pieces of once fired Lake City National Match brass (once fired) which I will start with.

Next month I'll add .223/5.56 conversion, dies, priming quick change, and possibly powder check. I'll also be adding 45ACP, but haven't finished my pistol yet. Those will be the primary calibers I'll be reloading.

  5. This. :excl:

Why don't you post some pictures of one that you've done so he can see how to do it? A picture is worth a thousand words.

The OP said he had the bushing, and could use it on a 5" build if it wouldn't work for the 4-1/2". I got the impression he had a 4-1/2" kart barrel/bushing.

  6. Thank you guys for the info. Can a bushing barrel be used? I have a Kart bushing barrel already. No big deal as I have another build that will stay Government length. If a bull needs to be used for a 4.5" build I will do that & use the Kart bushing for the 5" build.

I think it depends on your slide. If there's enough material in the nose of the slide, it would be possible to cut 1/2" off, and recess the nose for the bushing.

OTOH, Maybe you can just get a 4-1/2" slide and cut your dust cover back. I've always been under the impression that the rear of the dust cover, which the recoil spring guide rests against, needs to be milled back a tad. The recoil spring is different, AFAIK.

I have never done it, the others here might be able to offer better advice. Think it through before you mill anything, IMO.

  7. Two members recently had problems uploading an avatar, I tried it myself (using Safari) and I could not get it to work either when selecting a file that was stored on my laptop.

If I store that same file on my website and use a URL to upload the avatar then it works perfectly. I Stored the avatars for the two members having the same issue on my website and they were able to upload their image into their avatar using the URL method.

I experienced this on Linux using Firefox.

  8. Speed, flatter trajectory with high BC bullets. I'm hoping to get close to 3000 FPS. My .260 Rem is running near 2750.

One of the better shooters in my club just put together a 6mm rifle, wasn't Creedmoor though, I believe it was 6mm BR. He had a variety of loads last month, about .2 grain difference trying to dial it in. One of the groups were almost on top of each other, he was only shooting 3 shots per group. He was getting 2800-2900 fps as I recall.

  9. Doug,

I'll be watching this closely. I was reading that the head of the case was intentionally exactly the same as the 308 so that it could use existing actions.

Anyway, I'm interested in this as I have a Rem 700 blank that I plan to mill and had been planning to make it 308, but since the bolt/action are exactly the same for the 6mm Creedmoor I'm interested in how your rifle works out. With the understanding that you're putting it on a semi-automatic action...maybe I'll just try a barrel on a LR-308 myself...

What is the advantage over the 6.5mm Creedmore? (fps ?)

  10. Barrels are only a few weeks out. Uses a regular AR-10 bolt. I'm getting jazzed to start working up a load!

That sounds cool, so it's only a barrel change? Must use the same mags also.

Do you need a different buffer? Or just use an adjustable gas block?

  11. I was under the impression that you will need to relieve just a tad inside the rear of the dust cover if you want to shorten a 5" frame.

Pardon my ignorance, but how would a 5" slide and frame work for a 4-1/2" gun? Won't the rear of the slide hang off the back of the frame when it's in battery?

  12. What are they charging for the ar-308 6mmCM barrel?

I didn't ask but since I know those guys I'm sure it will be reasonable. I'll post the cost when it's delivered. I have powder, 4350 and 4831sc, 1700 Berger 105 Hybrid, primers, brass and a set of Whidden 6mm CM dies at the house, now I just need that barrel.

    Doug

I'd be interested to know also, but must be bolt, barrel at minimum. Should be able to use the same mags.

May need an adjustable gas block or special buffer as well. Seems an adjustable gas block would help tune it.

  13. One suggestion, I found raw wood to be a bit to porous so I covered it with labels torn off powder bottles.

What I like to do on a bench like this is cut a piece of press board, and use contact cement to put it on the surface. Now you have a smooth surface to work on and can easily replace it in the future if it gets too dirty and/or dinged up.

I have a butcher block top workbench top I will use for my bench. I currently have it on some cheap metal legs, but will build some wood legs to make it real sturdy. I use the bench for metalworking and gun work so won't use a press board on it. I have a bench in my garage that has a plywood top and I use press board on it, held on with contact cement. I have a small South Bend lathe on it and it works well for that.

  14. welcome, where in NorCal are you? I shoot over at Lake Chabot. I got into reloading a few months ago, i got a used 550 off of Cal Guns. I have glad I got the 550 for my first press. As i understand if you run into issues it is a bit easier to stop and fix things with the 550, maybe that is not correct but the 550 is great. I ran it with out the case feeder for a few hundred rounds until i really got used to it and got the feel for it. You cant go wrong either way i think, just go slow and pay attention and if something doesnt "feel" right stop and check everything on the shell plate.

I shoot over at Metcalf mostly, but want to try Sunnyvale also, which is close to where I live. Sunnyvale is only a 100 yard range though. I shoot pistol over at 10th Street in San Jose.

Unfortunately we don't have anything in the area >200 yards without going to Folsom, and it seems hard to get access to the longer range there. I've seen that calguns does some events up there on the long range, I'd like to try and make it up there sometime.

Still undecided on the 550 or 650, I made an offer on the 650 but the seller hasn't replied so I'm inclined to go with the 550, which is what I had been pretty much decided on. I don't have the volume, just seems the auto-indexing would be nice to have.

  15. Welcome,

I have not had a 650. I did have a 550 and I have owned an rl1050 for 20 years. My advice would be to get the 650. That is what I would get if I was starting over.

The 550 is a nice press, but the manual indexing is tedious. I think as far as converting calibers the 550 and 650 are similar. Both are easy to switch.

I know that either would work for me. I've read about a few people that have had either squib or a double charge. Both are scary, but the indexing on the 650 seems to be a pretty good preventative for the double charge also.

  16. It was never my intention to be condescending.

Just to point out, when I read your comment and saw you were a moderator I was a bit surprised as I took it to be a bit condesending myself.

My surprise was at how these forums seem to be moderated, so it caught my attention...

I've been using online forums for many years, and know that sometimes it's hard to know how someone meant something, and you seem honest about not meaning it to be condensending...so I don't mean to chastise you.

These days I go out of my way to be considerate to as many people as I can, since it's so easy to miss some expression in text.

I would like to thank you for helping moderate these forums, it can be a tediuous job in itself.

  17. New to these forums from NorCal.

Interested in reloading, have exchanged some emails with Brian and have my finger on the trigger to start reloading, for lack of a better analogy. I have gotten intent to buy a 550, but have a friend trying to make me a deal on a 650...time will tell which way it goes.

I don't plan to do very much volume, maybe 500 a month, and I'm pretty sure that either press will work fine for me. I am mechanically inclined and do machining as a hobby, so the 650 doesn't scare me in that sense to setup. I think it all depends on how good a deal I can get the 650 for, if I buy new from Brian I will definitely go with the 550.

What exactly takes more time in changing the 650 between calibers?
