  1. I've got a LaserLyte and the LASR Range software. I'm not using it to it's full capability since I have to rack the slide too. Once the SIRT M&P is out then it will be much better.

I'm also using a M&P Officially Licensed Airsoft pistol. It is pretty effective at short ranges (7-10 yards).

    Great info!

I have MP9 pro 5''. Will the airsoft clone fit in my holster? How about the weight, all metal or polymer? I suppose the trigger on airsoft is totally different than APEX...

  2. I know Glock users have SIRT or auto-reset triggers + laser cartridge to train at home. Does MP users have equivalent tools available? How about airsoft clones, any metal slide that's exact copy of the real MP pro?

I emailed NextLevelTraining about MP version SIRT and was told they will be available in 2015.

At the mean time, it looks like I am stuck with LaserLyte cartridge and endless slide racks...

  3. This community is just wonderful. I got a great deal of help here.

BTW - I am the OP and I have placed an order of SDB just today. My needs are pretty unique though. YMMV.

    1. I have a separate RCBS single stage press + dies for rifle loads

    2. I have very limited space (the height of 650 is about 36-40 inches when mounted on table, and taller if mounted on strong mount) and the slimness of SDB is very attractive to me

    3. I am pretty used to load 9mm with RCBS single stage press, 50-80 rounds/hour was the norm for me when consuming 1500/month. I'd be pretty happy with anything that can double that speed, i.e. I don't mind sitting at the reload bench for 4-5 hours a month

I thank everyone who have helped me in contributing valuable information.

  4. Thanks everyone who have made valuable recommendations.

It looks like Dillon Square Deal B is what I am buying, after watching some youtube demonstrations. Although it does require both hands to feed brass and bullet, it can still be fast - at least faster than I needed it to be. I don't mind that at all, since I did not plan to use the case/bullet feeder on the 650 for now anyway (maybe in the remote future). It is also very slim and would fit really well on my mounting board.

    Thanks everyone!

  5. rtp,

Thanks for the great and detailed information. I really appreciate it.

I currently have my RCBS single stage mounted on a 10''x8''x3'' wood board that is clamped to my desk. It works really well and take-down only takes a few seconds to unclamp. How heavy is the Hornady LnL AP compared to a single stage, if I don't have the feeders? I just want to see if my desk can handle that thing mounted on a simliar 10''x8''x3'' board.

    Thanks.

  6. I shoot IDPA 9mm, about 1000-1500 rounds per month currently. Looking to increase the consumption to about 2500 rounds per month.

For the past few months, I have been using my single stage RCBS press. It has been painful and time consuming. I am ready to upgrade to a progressive system, but I have some unique needs...

    1. Due to limited space and the lack of a good loading location, I have to set up and take down the press at least once a week. Basically I need my system to be fairly portable and can be stored in a box if not in use.

    2. Aside from that, I just need a system to load 300-400 rounds 9mm per hour. That would be good enough for me. I probably do not need any feeders (case or bullet) to reduce the space needed, and makes the take-down easier I suppose.

Give those, I have been researching 3 machines:

    - Dillon 650 (I really like the powder check, but without feeders, would 650 be just another 550?)

    - Hornady LNL AP

    - RCBS Pro 2000

I have seen Hornady LNL AP set up in my local Cabelas, and it is a monster in size. Does not look like it is easy to take it down and store it. I have no clue how big the Dillon or RCBS is at all.

Can someone with experience with these machines please provide some insights?

    Thanks.

  7. New shooter here.

I am reading 2 books to guide me in dry fire traininig: "Your Competition Handgun Training Program" (by Michael Seeklander) and "Refinement and Repetition" (by Steve Anderson). I think both books are great but they cater more to ISPC/USPSA.

I am curious when IDPA shooters follow the drills from those books, should we wear or not wear vest? My gut feeling is yes we should wear the vest in dry fire whenever applicable, because 90% of the matches require concealment. However, I am also concerned that with large amount of dry fire training using the vest, is it possible the muscle memory eventually won't allow draw/reload to be as efficient/fast as when no vest is needed?

I want to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have been following the drills in those books for IDPA. Thanks.

  8. PIcked up a M&P Pro 9mm yesterday. I have a Glock 17, and XDM 5.25. I shot USPSA 20 years ago, shooting 1911 45 acp and 38 Super working up to A class. I could not keep up with the gun race. I shot 45 when the 38 Super took the lead. I was shooting a single stack 38 Super when the hi cap came to life. I was looking at $3500 to build a hi-cap gun to stay in the game, ( this was before alI the new classes that are out there now) I just could not do it, so I got out. going other shooting games, shotgun clays, then to long range Rifle.

Now the pistol game is calling me back. I like being able to buy a gun and take it to a match. What mods do I need to make things better, and stay in IDPA SSP and Production USPSA. I am thinking trigger mod, SS guide rod, extended mag release, etc. I don't want to spend a lot, that is why got out the first time.

I am looking also at limited. I know I would be shooting minor, What are the rules for Limited?

    Mark

I shoot IDPA SSP with my MP9 pro 5''

The only mod I put it on are APEX AEK and RAM (both are internal changes), plus Talon tape grip

    It performed flawlessly so far

  9. From my intrepretation of the rules, placing a non ported barrel in them will allow the shooter to run them in IDPA and USPSA events, correct?

    The factory slide is legal.

So if I am intrepreting this right, you can put the Apex spring kit, RAM, a Non ported KKM barrl , sites etc in one and run it as production in USPSA and IDPD ESP and be well within the rules. (As long as they hit the productuon #'s)

    Anyone see this as inaccurate?

I think you are right. This is exactly what I plan to do when I can get my hands on one of these for my IDPA SSP matches. Currently running MP9 Pro and love it.

  10. Currently shooting MP9 pro in IDPA SSP division. Because I have small hands, the grip feels much better without even the small back strap. I plan to take off back strap and just put Talon tape there.

Is this legal for IDPA SSP? I read the rule book but it only talks about stippling and texturing of the grip/back strap. Nothing is mentioned about removing back strap.

    Any experience/thoughts are appreciated.

  11. One more option is trying to flip the mag release around and activate it with your trigger finger....

Check episode 124 from PowerFactorShow, the guest starts talking about her gear at around the 20 minute mark and 27 minute mark for M&P specific details. Looks like she put grip tape where the backstrap is supposed to go

Using trigger finger to release mag will not prevent shifting of grip, because the strong hand eventually has to shift such that my thumb can reach the slide stop after the new mag is inserted.

  12. I have been shooting my MP9 Pro for a few months in IDPA SSP division. I'd say about 4k rounds have gone through it.

However, I noticed that the mag release is harder and harder to reach over time, as if it started getting stuck and won't pop out. I have to try hard to get to it with my short thumb, then push it really hard. I have had several incidents during IDPA matches that first attempt to release mag did not work, and I have to try again.

Question is, if I buy some aftermarket mag release and put them on, will that render the gun illegal for SSP? The IDPA rule books says only mag release from another SSP eligible gun can be used. Do S&W produce other stock handguns with more usable mag releases?

I blame my short thumb and maybe a too-strong mag release spring for this. BTW - is there a way to replace the mag release spring?

    Thanks.

  13. Just started shooting IDPA SSP division. I watch many Youtube videos of the masters doing slide lock reload without rotating the grip in strong hand.

I tried that with my MP9 Pro, and found that my strong hand thumb cannot reach neither the mag release nor the slide stop without rotating the grip.

I know I have small hands, and that's why I chose MP9 Pro and I put on the smallest backstrap on the grip.

Does anyone know if Glock 34 gen4 or XDM 5.25'' would help my short thumb to reach those buttons without having to rotate my grip?

    Thanks!
