  1. They aren't recommended for Open guns.  There are some out there with many, MANY thousands of rounds on them, but still not recommended.  Open guns are simply very violent compared to a Limited gun.

At ohio 3g and PCC championship today PCC shooters had to hit 5 8" steels at 100 yds So a buddy of mine [a good shot] with aJP-15 could not hit them so what kind of accuracy groups with what load are PCCs capable of?

I know one of the guys who shot PCC at this match, and smoked this stage, ran Hornady HAP bullets through his MPX.  He's also spent quite a bit of time in load development for accuracy and runs PCC in many/most 3G matches now instead of a rifle.

Also, I think that plate rack was closer to 80 yards than 100.

  3.

I’m looking at one of his open guns as well. Could you tell me more about the ones he built for you? A PM is fine. Thanks!

First one had two top ends. 9 Major and 38 SC. Both very tight fitting and barrel locks up properly. Made on Phoenix Trinity components with a Classic grip.

Second one is very similar, but 38 SC only. PT EVO grip, and went to Vortex Venom red dot instead of CMore.

Both guns use Trubor barrels with comp blanks on them. He machines his comp in. No Loc-tite, no set screws, and they aren’t coming loose. Both are great guns, and function extremely well. Glenn’s fit and finish work are top notch. Yes, he can take a little while to build, but very good quality.

Jumping in on this thread.  How many of you have had pistols built from LSI?

just curious how their custom work is, not just tuning existing pistols.

He's done two Open guns for me and both run great.

  5. I've had the 6 MOA frame mounted on mine for about a year.  Love it.  Had the 3 MOA, but it was a little too small for me.  Moved that one to a 45* offset sight on my rifle.

  6. I've been very happy with my Firebird Precision TAC-12A1.  Make sure your mag feed lips are tuned to the right width, run an ammo with a good stiff hull and crimp (I have stuck with Fiocchi), and make sure the gas is adjusted right (not bleeding off too much).

In an AK pattern, it is undeniable that Mike & Lan at Dissident Arms have their guns running like raped apes.

  7. This is a cut and paste from Ken Johnson, posted in a reloading Facebook group.  Ken is the ballistician for Shooters World Powders, and extremely knowledgeable about all things reloading.  Shooters World has just introduced a new powder to be used in similar applications as Varget.  I don't see this on Powder Valley's site yet, but I suspect it will be in the same price range as other 8# canisters of Shooters World powders when it gets there.  I can tell you that other powders of theirs are the real deal, and I expect nothing different from this one.

"Well.....we just completed numerous test loads of a new propellant. And we compared this new propellant to Hodgdon Varget. We're calling the new stuff "Precision Rifle". I'd have preferred "Target", but I guess that name was taken!

In every test load we've worked up, "Precision Rifle" has performed to within 25 fps from the alternative, Varget. And the pressure level of Precision Rifle corresponded identically to Varget also. In other words, "Same charge weight, same velocity, same pressure."

So far, we've tested .223 REM, .308 WIN, .30-30 WIN, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 REM, .300 WIN MAG, .30-06, all with several bullet weights.

I just finished some extreme temperature testing this morning, because we KNOW everybody's going to be all hot and bothered about the temperature sensitivity. As for me, I don't see it as a big deal...but some folks do! And we aim to please.

So, by my calculations, I witnessed Varget velocity change at 0.13 fps/degree F. And the Precision Rifle velocity change was 0.09 fps/degree F. I shot all loads today at a maximum temperature of 150F. Ambient temperature for the day was 50F.

Now, what's a bigger deal for me, is that in each and every test of comparison, the velocity range and standard deviation of Precision Rifle was better than the alternative. Those numbers speak to me.

Another thing I liked about this propellant was that my Harrell Powder Dump was really consistent in dropping charge weights. It was seldom that I had to trickle additional grains into the pan, after a dump. That's a time saver for me, and I'm sure a time saver for hand loaders as well!

Being that this propellant is of the same burn rate as the alternative, and that we've tested it in numerous loads against this other popular powder...found it to have similar or better temperature sensitivity...and similar or better range and standard deviation...I wonder how soon we'll launch it??

  8. Has anyone tried the 2A Armament Regulated Bolt Carrier seen here?  A lot about it seems really intriguing.  Titanium carrier body (available in QPQ Nitride) with the rear portion of the body 7075-T6 aluminum.  Adjustable gas in the BCG, adjusted right through the ejection port.  Total weight 5.95 oz, with bolt.

I've heard that the SV triggers fit better than STI in the EVO grip.

Has anyone fit an X-Line trigger in a PT EVO grip?

Yes, I have two X-Line triggers in my guns.  One EVO, one Classic grip.  Both fit the channel with no modifications.  Pre- and over-travel were easily set in the the trigger.

So how about aluminum PT grips? What is everyone's  opinion on them? That is the route I am thinking about going.

Depends what you're shooting.  Aluminum grips really aren't recommended for Open guns.  Open is just too violent.  That being said, I do know a couple with high cycles on them with no problem.  Aluminum on Limited guns is good to go.

You're right, that's was I was thinking, I just didn't say it correctly.  Have you had any problems with the compressed spring preventing the sleeve from moving up far enough to drop a bullet?

Nope.  Trim it so there's just a little compression on it when the dropper is "at rest" (1050 toolhead raised).  It works fine with 115 gr/124 gr JHP's and 55gr FMJBT's.  If the spring goes solid, you cut it WAAAY too long and have WAAAY too much preload on it.

I started off with a tension spring like is pictured.  I must have used one that was too strong or had too much preload.  It pulled to one side so much that when the dropper would lift, the spring was pinning the dropper tube against the die body and it wouldn't come back to its resting position (gave me the rain of bullets).  That's when I went to the compression spring.  For me, it works much better, and it's out of the way underneath.
