  1. Been using Ramshot Comp for years. It will mostly mirror N320 as far as load specs. It is a shotgun powder designed to reduce recoil.

I use it for 147 mollies, but I find 135 Bayous to be the best load. I load both to about 135 PF.

What charge weight are you using for 135PF? The data they list just seems really low.

  2. I have a mess of 147gr Precision Molys. I found some Ramshot Comp at the store the other day. Looking through some of the post here, people are using 3.3 to 3.5gr of Competition with similar bullets. But Ramshot list the max load for lead 147 as 2.8gr, which is supposed to barely make minor. I checked for Ramshot data in my Lyman 49th last night and the only powder listed is True Blue, and the data is WAY off from Ramshots listed data. Any ideas?

  3. CBags - The only thing I saw is you need to back it off a bit. My target velocity for 147gr minor is 900 fps, plenty of fudge factor for major matches. Did you notice your ES and SD climed with more powder?

There are lots of explanations for the variance in velocity, even if we exclude the occasional powder slop when loading. 9 mm range brass is definatly enough to cause those kind of swings, I just wish these noobs would buy better ammo so we could pick up better brass when they leave it.

N320 is good stuff, its the only VV I use, and for an Open guy that says a lot, I've tried lots in open 3N37, 3N38, N350, N105 but don't use any of them. The only thing I found that comes close with 9 mm and 147gr is Clays and I didn't like the accuracy.

If you can't find VV N320 try some IMR7625, yeah I know makes no sese, but it works very nice, being a bit slower is also cuts back on the pressure.

Notice I can't spell till I have finished my first cup of coffee, still working on it.

Thanks for the advice. I like the way the 3.5gr load feels, and I am hesitant to go lower. Reason being that the brass looks like it is hardly getting out of the gun. I will make some 3.3's or 3.4's and see how those do.

  4. My limited testing showed 320 to be virtually immune to temperature changes. Always 134-135 no matter the temp, humidity, elevation, etc.

You could have a slow jug or getting bad readings from the chrono. Put in fresh batteries. Then blacken the MG bullets with a sharpie and see if anything changes.

I think it may be the chrono...I have used this same jug to load 147gn Zero's and they were VERY consistent. I have to ask the stupid question though, whats the point in marking them with a sharpie? lol

So the bullets contrast more against the screen.

  5. To CBags04: Do you have any explanation why 3.7g of N320 produced lower velocities using Precision Delta 147g vs Precision? I noticed the difference in OAL 1.14 vs 1.12 for the Precisions. Do you think this was the reason for the decrease in velocity? Which load shot better in your opinion?

I would have to guess it was both the shorter OAL, and that the PD's jacket is harder than the moly coating on the Precisions. The two 3.7gr loads felt about the same, which they were both pretty soft. The 3.5gr feels stupid soft though, even at 138PF.

  6. It's stainless it shouldn't rust.

Keeping this simple without an in depth metallurgical discussion, Stainless is an alloy that contains a small amount of regular steel and it will rust. Not as quick or as bad as steel but it will rust. Just like dcarter, I found out Saturday how bad an M&P slide will rust if you forget to oil it....

Thanks Ken. I got some Eezox in the mail yesterday, and I think it will do a pretty good job of protecting the metal; has to be better than CLP.

  7. I was able to put about 200 rounds through this bad boy over the weekend. Lucky for me it was perfectly sighted in and didn’t need any adjustments. Centering the sights in the dove rails seems to always get it perfectly sighted in. This is the third M&P that I put sights on and it ended up shooting dead on by simply centering the sights in the dove tails. I thinks its really cool to be able to simply center the sights in the dove tails and its dead on.

On the first test session I had a couple light strikes which is some what expected because I took four coils off of the APEX Competition striker spring which makes it really light but also can lead to light strikes. I swapped it out for a new APEX Competition striker spring with two coils cut off and it ran fine without any other light strikes. I also had to modify the sear a little bit to move the trigger back a little bit in the trigger guard because it was a little too far forward for my liking.

After making those changes to the trigger and striker spring it was running like a champ. I was shooting minor Power Factor 200gr CMJ Montana Gold Bullets with 3.1gr of Clays powder and an OAL of 1.14 and it shot pretty soft with very little muzzle flip. I made this bullet load for my ladies 4 inch M&P to make Minor PF so I am sure they are a little faster out of this 5 inch barrel. I may be able to get away with using 3.0gr of powder and achieve the same FPS as the 4 inch gun. I also want to experiment with using 180gr FMJ Zero bullets to see how that changes the felt recoil.

I was only able to use a stock 15 round magazine with the base pad really chopped up so it would fit inside the magwell so I am yet to really feel the balance of the gun with a high cap 20 round magazine. But so far it handles and shoots pretty good. Its very light compared to my steel frame EAA Witness Limited though and it feels quite a bit different when shooting simply due to the reduced weight. With it being 20oz lighter than the EAA Witness Limited it feels like I am shooting a plastic squirt gun. The weight difference in its self is going to take a while to get use to.

The only thing that I feel like I have to improve is the trigger reset distance. I want to get the trigger break, position, and travel distance as close to my EAA Witness Limited as possible. Right now the position and trigger break are fine, but the reset distance is a little bit more than my EAA so that needs some work. The longer reset distance forces me to row my finger backwards more than I am use to in order to reset the trigger so its harder to shoot at the same speed as my EAA. If I can’t run the trigger as fast or faster than my EAA then this project is not going to work for its intended use. In order to shooting Limited Minor I HAVE TO be able to shoot faster. If the longer reset distance can’t be reduced this project may reach a dead end.

But I still have quite a bit of testing to do with loads and trigger setups so I am not ruling this thing out just yet. It’s really fun to shoot and I am going to have my lady give it a try to see if she likes how it shoots as well. In a worse case scenario I will just use it as a Limited minor gun for her to use when she wants to shoot.

What kind of primers were you using when getting the light strikes? If you weren't using Federals you may want to try some of those as they are a little softer.

  8. Do ya'll find that SR7625 meters well?

Like water. Spot on 4.6gr with every pull of the handle.

Do ya'll find that SR7625 meters well?

I randomly pull a case off the 650 and powder check about 4-5 times per 500 rounds. I have never had a deviation in thousands of rounds with 7625.

I reckon I'll have to try some then :D

  9. It depends on the bullet profile. I use the precision black bullets (flat points) and have to load them short (1.105") so the rifling doesn't get engaged. This is in various 9mm M&P's with factory barrels.

This. I have been able to load the Precision 147's to 1.115 without it touching the rifling, but try to keep it around 1.110. Precision Delta 147's I load at 1.140.

  10. I too find Clays shoots softer than TG, even 124gr over Clays vs 147gr over TG.

I find that N320 rocks with 124gr MTG in 9 mm, even compared to Clays. Harder to get, cost more, just as clean but a softer pulse. But Clays rules with 147gr. TG in 40 with 200gr jacketed, is a good load.

I always thought that factory 9 was minor, but I learned last night that is not the case two guys borrowed my crono to check their ammo for Space City Challenge, well thier factory stuff only came out 121 pf. So you need to crono, else you don't know what you are shooting. Another guy showed up with a different crono and it didn't change anything, go figure. My major 9's came out at 1378 fps 170 pf right where they should be so I knew it was right.

When you say Clays, would that be Hodgdon Clays, and not Hodgdon Universal or International Clays?

  11. Fc is shorter then win

No one listened to this guy, but I think he may have hit the nail on the head. Shorter cases will not enter the seater as deeply, affecting crimp

I recently had to mic every 9mm case I own and sort them first according to that. Then according to headstamp. Royal pain, but may solve your problem

I did. I checked probably 10-20 Fed cases with the WIN and RP cases that I was using and there were all very close.

  12. I can't see the vid right now but I've made a couple tools for removing it.

One is a broken X acto blade and the other is a bent piece of spring I cut off when trimming the mag spring to length.

That sounds like it should work well.
