  1. If your m1 is an older one with the simple crescent in the end as opposed to the deeper V, then you don't need to weld it up

Interesting, as mine only has the small crescent. Maybe a mod I hold off on until I rip myself open.

Thanks for all the info guys. Iknow I can send it off to have it done, but having spent many years foodservice TIG welding, and a couple years taking gunsmithing classes, I am sure I can get it figured out pretty easily. I just figured I would save some time doing homework, rather than to dive straight in.

  2. Can anyone give me a couple good pictures of a welded M1 lifter? i just picked up a new to me M1 and am looking to start shooting 3-gun next season. My M1 already ghost loads, and has no trouble cycling low brass loads. So, longer mag tube and the lifter mod are all I need to at least have a good start. I would like to get on this sooner rather than later, as this will be my pheasant hunting posting gun for the fall.

    Thanks

  3. I have no problems with reliability, I carry a Witness in 40 every day, but obviously I have not modified either of mine as agressively as pictured. If you just take .020-.030 at a time you should not have a problem. The big difference would be if you are running some hot loads, and some factory loads. If you modded the ejector just for hot loads you might have trouble with factory loads. if you mod just for factory loads, you may still be chasing your brass 30yds with hot loads.

  4. I agree whit Cha-Lee. I am on my second Witness in 40, and it has been pretty easy to change how and where the brass lands. first thing's firts, the 40's and 10's are undersprung. So a heavier recoil spring is in order. After that its all in adjusting the tip of the ejector.

A guy on my local board shoots some crazy hot 10mm loads out of his Witness. He is running a Sprinco, and has brought his ejector all the way down to .362 (see pic). I would not go that short right off the bat obviously, but take .020-.030" off at a time. Adjusting the ejector tip is easy. You can adjust it so your brass goes right where you want it depending on the angles.

  5. My guess is they just under-spring the 40's and 10's from the factory. The factory spring is only 12lbs for 40, and 14lbs for 9mm and 45.

    From Wolff's web site

    "Standard Size Models

    Factory Rating: 14 Lb. - 9mm, .45 ACP, Super .38 and 10mm

Factory Rating: 12 Lb. - .40 S&W all models except CZ

    Factory Rating: 16 Lb. - .40 S&W - CZ Only

    Factory Rating: 13 Lb. - CZ 97 .45 ACP"

Seems odd the factory spring is 16 for CZ and Tanfo is only 12. 40S&W runs pressures up to the neighborhood of 27k, while 9 runs up to 30k. So in theory you would need just as heavy if not a heavier spring. My new Witness classic is getting at least a 16, and 18 if it cycles and my front site comes down in a timely manner.

  6. I know that some CZ mags will fit EAA/Tanfo. Think its smallframe 9mm if Im not mistaking.

FYI the CZ75B mags are too short for the small frame Tanfoglio. They are like 1/16" too short, so it will lock in without a base pad but not with a base pad.

The SP-01 frames are longer, so maybe those mags would fit.

I know this isn't completely related, but I wanted to make sure people realize they aren't the same length of magazine. I unfortunately bought 4 of them after many people told me they would fit in a small frame, but they do not.

It may all depend on the individual gun. I have one of the new Witness Classic's (small frame 40). Just for giggles I tried the mags out of my CZ75B in 9mm, and they locked in just fine. Again for giggles I also checked to see if they would feed and they did just fine (with the exception of the whole 9mm not working in a 40 real well).

  7. I think a lot of people are looking for any advise they can get. There isn't a whole lot of places that have Tanfo knowledge on the net. And each area seems to have its different group of regulars. Watch the Clone Club on CZ forum and here and you see a lot of the same threads. Sometime you will see the same question in all three areas.

  8. Awesome! I've been wanting to get some Tanfoglio gear myself. Thanks for sharing. :)

Hey, also could you answer a couple questions for me:

What ammo were you shooting mostly before the slide cracked? (competition handloads, defense, bulk FMJ?)

Could you tell if the slide had been hitting the frame at all? (ie was the face of the dust cover on the slide peened or shiny from impact)

    Thanks!

For ammo, it was exclusively Federal (my employer) Self defense rounds. At most 200-300 FMJ's, just becuase the SD loads are cheaper for me.

In my inspections I saw ZERO slide or frame peening prior to that range session. I did not look at that before I shipped it off, but had just done a pretty thurough inspection after the previous range session.

  9. I would have to agree Nealio. I am wondering how much of this has to do with the rumors of a new importer coming into the game :surprise: I recently sent an email off to Tanfo becuase I want a hat and shirt. These was their exact respopnse:

we received your message and we thank you.

Please wait for a while and there will a company

in the USA where you can find Tanfoglio parts,

    accessories and clothing.

It will be advertised in the next weeks.

    Best regards

    FRATELLI TANFOGLIO S.N.C.

  10. 7 days from my UPS depot back to my front door. I specifically requested an older square top slide, and they did go ahead and install a new square top, and a new barrel. I forgot to ship a mag in the gun, and they shipped it back with a new mag as well.

    Thanks EAA!

  11. We have all heard the reports of cracked slides on the Witness Steel in 10 and 40, well mine just joined the club. I have around 2000-2500 rounds down the pipe. All factory loads, never have put a handload down the pipe. Off EAA it goes >:(

Worst part, I was just taking it to the range for one last ride. My new small frame came in yesterday, and I am picking it up tomorrow. I was just planning on selling it this weekend. I hope EAA turns it around fast >:(

  12. I usually use just enough spring to function. I.E. us the spring that is heaviest if possible. If the heaviest spring won't cycle properly with the load you are using, step down to the next lighter, and so on until you find the spring that works for you.

  13. More than likely the springs are from a "calibration pack" that had multiple weight springs. Depending on the ammo you are running you can change the spring to increase reliability, speedup, or slow down the recoil cycle.

  14. Inside the mag there was a ever so slight amount of a burr. i took a toolmakers stone (about 220g) and ten seconds the burr was gone. Personally I would not waste time with the Dremel around the "pins". The burr was extremely small, maybe .002. The followers worked just fine, no replacement needed.

My mags had spacers in the front.
