  1. Posted on Facebook by Rockcastle:

‎807 unique computers hit the "enter" button tonight in less than 2 seconds to get a coveted spot in the Rockcastle Pro Am 3-Gun this August. Instant 300+ waiting list. Linda is sorting out duplicates and confirmation emails will be sent by tomorrow. Thank you so much for the support. It is humbling......Did you get in?????

Wow. Guess I will be at the end of the waiting list this year. :(

Fingers crossed that my 9:30:005 entry was enough to get in.

Also, had to change the notification from instant to daily on this thread, lol.

  2. Linda, thanks for all your hard work and dedication. It's certainly appreciated. Prayers to you and your family during these tough times.

This was my first time at Rockcastle and I had high expectations of the match in addition to the facility. I've heard nothing but good things from friends that attended last years match, as well as various other 3 gun matches and sniper matches over the past couple years. Rockcastle didn't disappoint to say the least. That place is truly a shooters paradise. 2,000 acres of pristine property in the foothills. I can't wait to go back! There was always something to do from the side matches, vendor tents, stages or hundreds of people to talk to. The free beer trailer was a nice touch too

I shot Pro and had no issues with RO's the entire match, much less stage 5. They were all pleasant and did a fantastic job. My hat's off to them. Shooters and many others at the match could catch a break and chill in their vehicles AC when they pleased. I doubt the RO's had such luck. Who'd of thought Kentucky would be as hot or hotter than GA in August.

Thanks to AR15.com, Rockcastle staff, vendors, countless volunteers and anyone else that had a hand in putting on such a great event.

It was also pretty cool to chat it up with Nick Noble. What a great host.

  3. You are going to hit where your eyes are looking, same as in pistol or rifle target transitions. The choke will help but the real key is keeping your body moving along with your eyes on the follow through. This was the first thing I had to learn shooting trap in college and within a month I was hitting 24 of 25 routinely at matches with a school provided 1100. Someone else mentioned it above, the shotgun gets pointed by you whole body following where your eyes are looking. If your eyes stop so does the gun. Best way I found to do it was to thinking about anything other than hitting the clay and let my body do it automatically (trying to get back in that mindset for my pistol shooting).

As for practice I disagree with some of the others here. You have to work out the mechanics first. I would suggest loading the gun, having the bolt closed and at low ready. Then see if you can have the thrower set to load in the same position for a series of shots (5-10) before it changes angle. Get the sight picture down. Try to take a freeze frame in your mind of the picture you have when you make a solid "Dust" hit. Keep it simple and go forward from there adding differing angles, delay, etc. Get the muscle memory down and everything else will take care of itself.

This a very good point to note. Keep it simple as possible until you start to get comfortable. Each time the skeet is changing speed/ direction/ climb etc... will require a different hold, or lead.

  4. .... my only consolation was that I said pull with my action open and shells still on my belt, and still managed to hit 6...

....So, back to basics, I need to learn about sight picture and swinging the gun, and I need to learn some basics before I even go back out, or I am just wasting ammo and guessing.

Personally, I don't think you'd be wasting time and ammo if you stop doing what's in bold. Learn to hit the clays first. Then add more difficult tasks, like starting at low ready. Going as far to start with an unloaded gun, cylinder bore and a skeet traveling away from you is just making it hard on yourself, really hard.

Make it easy to get hits until you get the hang of it. Start at high ready or even with your head on the gun and sighting down the barrel. Only work up to more difficult tasks as you get your hits consistently.

In addition to knowing where your pattern is going (poa/poi), another thing to consider with your cylinder bore, is you need to be hitting those targets as SOON as you can. The further away they get, the more your pattern opens up and you're lucky to get a pellet or two on the bird.

Did you split alot of clays into large peices? or dust 'em? That is your indicator as to how good a hit you are getting.

Don't forget to lead the skeet as well. The faster it's traveling and/or further away, the more you need to lead the skeet. May be able to watch some youtube vid's with animation to get a 'feel' for it.

I hate shooting skeet with a cylinder bore. Modified all the way for me.

  5. Why not both...PRO and RO?

I did last year. It was the most enjoyable match I've RO'ed. Laid back, good food, and I still get a kick out of sharing some of the AM stories.

The best was when Devon Niederbrach couldn't quite get high enough over the back window of the car on AM5 to get the last popper. No big deal, he put one through the rear windshield, hitting the popper in the process.

Bet that was a sight to see! Too bad there's no video to post, or is there? I'm not sure what would be more comical, the reaction of the shooter, RO, or squad. :D

  6. Try before you buy!

Like someone suggested, renting is a great option. Go to a local match and check out some guns there.

For production, I like Glocks with the M&P being VERY close behind. It's all personal preference though. XD's are fine, if that's what you like. I've enjoyed shooting them when I've had the opportunity (XD .40 5.25" and the XDM 5.25" 9mm). I just don't need a 3rd model in the mix :D

  7. I am going to pick up a M2 in the next few weeks and was wondering if it matters if it starts life as a field or tactical model? The only difference I see is the barrel length/sights. I don't think I want anything longer than a 21" barrel but I am also new at this and probably don't know better. I started shooting 3-gun just prior to my most recent deployment and had a great time but I want something a little more specialized than my 870. I can spend a little over $1K and have my mind pretty much decided on the M2. Thanks for your help.

I'm sure you probably already know this, but the biggest difference is the tactical model comes with the ghost ring sights. The field model comes w/ the vent rib. Big difference in sight picture. Barrels for the Benelli's aren't cheap either at $300+.

    Thanks for your service!

  8. Does anyone know when the next episode is coming on (re-runs included)? I realize the championship is being held in two days, and don't want to miss it.

At the beginning of the month DirecTV installed new HD receivers at the house. In the process I lost my old DVR with 5-6 episodes and have not been able to record anymore since then. I've not had any luck searching the guide for the shows either. I've searched for various spellings as well as trying to search channels 603 and 606. I intended to set it to record re-runs so I could get caught up, but can't seem to find anything at all!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Are the episodes available online or not? All I found were trailers on the website.

    Thanks.

  9. Thanks to everyone involved for putting on a great match! My only complaint is I don't think I was selected for any of the prizes, lol. The stages were fun and challenging. I definitely need more practice on the swingers and need to learn to slow down on long mini poppers! It was great shooting with all the guys in Squad 1.

I just recently started taking shooting videos. What a great training tool! Now I just need to remember to ask someone to follow me with the camera more often. Thanks to Glen for filming me on Stage 8!

Still need to upload the one of Dave Sevigny shooting Stage 3, Quick and Tight. Man, he's quick!
