  1. Got some cast .452 230 lee truncated cone tumble lube bullets and I'm not sure what the oal should be? Lee's manual says 1.19 is the min oal for cast 230gr bullets but this is to long for my 1911. Surely someone else is loading a similar bullet and I'd appreciate a little help as I'm new to reloading. I'll be loading to shoot SS any recommendations for use with 231 tgroup clays or wst would also be appreciated. Thanks

  2. It works OK. The LLA is not optimum, but it works. Cast the bullets down at 9 to 11 bhn and save some money with a side benefit of having bullets that shoot better and lead less given the same powder and lube.

The only problem with LLA is volume, if you put enough on the bullets to keep from getting muzzle end leading it will choke your dies to death in a couple hundred rounds. Thin it out with mineral spirits so that it just puts a hint of a gold tint on the bullets and that is all you can really use. A Chore Boy pad unfolded and wrapped in a bore brush will take the leading out without any of the work, a couple swipes with it every couple hundred rounds should keep you in good shape.

Casting with range scrap...done several hundred lbs that's been the consistent reading throughout. Maybe I could soften it up with some stick on weights? Thx for the cleaning tips

  3. Just got a springfield 1911 loaded target. Wondering what things I can do via polishing, smoothing etc to improve this gun. Also how should I get the front dovetail sight out?

    Thanks

  4. lol...i just picked up a turkey fryer and a cast iron pot. works well. one thing i noticed on one of my longer sessions was a goldish purple color oxidation on my melt. i assume this was from the temp being too high? how many molds were you using casting 1000/hr?

  5. getting a new sti trojan to shoot in single stack and looking for some advice on what shape/weight and any other helpful info you may have about casting bullets for this gun. Prefer to cast as efficiently as possible therefore I've only been considering the 6 cav lee molds, unless someone knows where to get a 10-12 cav somewhere. Also what's the general consensus on tumble lube bullets?

  6. Hmmm...Thank you everyone for your input...I've got a lot to consider here, but I've formed some tenative opinions about which way I'll go. Will there really be much difference in felt recoil between .45 and .40? I'm assuming that's the major reason people elect to shoot .40 over .45 other than marginal ammo cost? Probably should have mentioned this at first but I live in Kalifornia and as you all know this makes my gun choices a little different than the rest of the free country. Is a STI Trojan CA legal? I have done some casting in the past and was wondering if anyone had any tips on making bullets for .40 or .45 to use in such a gun. Also are these "recoilmaster" devices legal in single stack and secondly are they any good?

    Thanks!
