  1. I bought a BTR-2 in FFP in their first release. Couldn't be more pleased, especially considering the price point compaired to other scopes out there in the same magnification class. Optical quality is great. I use ofset mount irons for 0-20 yards, 1x through the tube for 0-80 or so, and magnify past that. As mentioned previously, head position is important with any scope. Dry fire practice and forcing yourself into getting in and out of unconventional position (such as practicing with a barricade prop for low squat and lower, or rifle in canted position) makes good habits. My personal experience is that many, but not all shooters, who have issues with appearant tube diameter/exit pupil/head alignment, don't really practice enough. If they do, they practice in conventional and comfortable positions. Do the homework, meaning live fire and dry practice outside of prone and the bench, and this scope is appropriate for any level shooter.

    Stand your ground.

  2. Just spoke to Kevin at MGM and got an update. I've measured the adjustment ring diameter on the new Bushnell 1-6.5x at 1.672". As yet, they've not had enough demand to warrant making a Switchview for this scope. They have an existing product for the Bushnell 4200 series that is 1.655" (as referenced above, it is in fact the model SVMAPT). This is the closest thing they have to a fit for the 1-6.5, and will require some lapping to open it up. I just ordered one and will post an update when it's been tweaked to fit. Also, the next generation of the Switchviews will have a shorter throw lever. For anyone interested, the scope is a winner.

  3. Second stage at local match was classifier. I was up second or third and went straight to RO duties after shooting. Next stage (24 rounds) I was up first. Walked through and began shooting. Three rounds into second mag (8-round Single Stack) gun goes click. Drop mag, reload, cycle - click. Cycle again and slide stays back. Mag empty. Finished stage after fishing mag out of pocket. Never reloaded mags after classifier.

Have since added a mag check before starting every stage.

Been there, done that. I try to top off as soon as I've walked my targets and before I tape/RO.

  4. Night before a big match, I was really, really tired, but couldn't fall asleep. I tossed and turned until around 5am, when I think I finally drifted off. I got woken up at 6am by my buddies for breakfast so we could be on the range for 7am. To try and wake myself up, I sucked back a couple Red Bull in the car. No effect. A half hour later, I reached into the glove box for the caffeine pills I keep in case of late night drives and popped one of those. After 15 minutes, feeling absolute no effects from either of the previous two, I took another caffeine pill (against the instructions on the bottle). 10 minutes later, everything kicked in. I was too wired to do anything effectively.

In retrospect, that was pretty dumb, and if I was in poorer physical condition, could have been potentially damaging.

I don't drink Red Bull before shooting anymore, and the caffeine pills stay in the car.

I'm a crappy sleep to begin with, but I get into periods of sleep deprivation at work. When it happens and I'm feeling weak, I find that smaller amounts of caffeine will have the same affect as greater doses when I'm well rested. Also, hydration is critical. I find staying topped off on water allows me to recover faster from a period of deprivasion.

  5. My son and I started running 3-gun with what we had, could afford, my shotgun is the last old item I'm using. It's an 870 I originally built for HD use, 18.5" barrel 6 round mag and 12" pull stock. I want to upgrade the stock as the last band-aide before I upgrade to a semi-auto, unfortunatly that'll be after Ft. Benning. (I can't afford to go and buy a new shotgun) Should I just upgrade to the 14" Hogue stock or go for a pistol grip style stock for a little more control? I'm running on a tight budget here so be kind. If anyone has an old stock I'll gladly take it off your hands.

I recommend the Hogue. I've tried the pistol grip and prefer a traditional stock. I find I'm faster back on target splits.

  6. I only use a glove on my off hand as protection from heat. I load with my strong hand still and have no issues holding the shotgun that may become very hot loading and shooting when the courses of fire require more than two full reloads of the gun (usually over 27 rounds). My one bad habit is chewing on my fingers so I don't have any fingernail on my thumb to get caught in the loading gate.. :D

Me too. Mechanix work glove on the off hand.

  7. Key word being"budget". I would get the used 17 stock. Buy some extra mags.(you will want at least 5 or 6). And wear it out. Once you are sure it is the gun for you(with Glocks this is always a question mark) then think about changing sights, triggers, etc. or getting a 34 or something else.

I couldn't agree more. Shoot the snot out of it as is, then consider upgrades.

  8. Agreed. I installed a couple of Vanek's, then experimented with several other drop in's & combinations. I've come back to using only Charlie's as they're simple to install, consistant, and his support is great.
