Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Looked through the shot timer thread and didn't see anything in regards to this (well one person asked the question a couple years ago but it never got answered) I'm looking to get a shot timer for IPSC training purposes but I also have just started doing Steel Challenge matches with a Nordic Components .22lr AR upper so I want it to be able to work well with that too for steel challenge practice. During the one match I've done so far with the .22lr upper I had to redo a couple strings because the shot timer didn't pick up a couple shots from my carbine. I believe they were using CE Pocket Pro timers not sure if they were the first gen or the second gen ones though. Any advice is much appreciated. As far as features go I'm just needing basic ones (par time, delay start, etc) so my main feature I need is being able to reliably pick up shots from the .22 while being clipped to my belt
  2. Gun is a 9mm XD service, I can't really describe the jam completely because I was shooting an IPSC match at the time so I only was able to see it for a second or so before I just did a malfunction drill. In the brief moment that I was able to see it it looked like the round was getting caught up on the feed ramp. I had these happen about 5 times throughout the match. This is my first time loading JHP, before I've just used RN and have loaded it between 1.125 to 1.145 and never had any feeding issues but I know you can't just translate that over since RN and JHP have different shapes. Maybe I'll load another batch at 1.120 I can find the chamber depth with my caliper I guess and then add the rim thickness and that'll give me the max OAL for my particular gun right?
  3. Is there a general rule on adjusting OAL to improve feeding.....I think I should shorten (not going below minimum OAL for pressure concerns) but am just checking here first. I shot some MG 124gr JHP's with 4.0 Titegroup @ 1.100 for the first time this weekend and every 20th or so round wouldn't feed right.
  4. The brass didn't have a belt on it....I guess I just need to do a better job of inspecting brass that I pick up at the range. Since I'd been getting into the reloading groove I'd been lax in that area, just giving the brass a quick check for any splitting before throwing them on the 550B. What other types of things should I look for when inpecting brass? Odd type bulges? I usually run every loaded round through a case gauge but with these particular loads I just checked every 5th round or so. I was originally worried that it may be gun related (especially since i just paid $800 for this gun).
  5. I've been reloading 9mm for about 9 months (probably around 2k total) and just had my first stuck case. I've had the rare (maybe 5 or so total) FTF or FTE in the past with my reloads but these were quickly fixed by standard handgun malfunction clearing procedures. With this one though the slide would barely budge when I tried to rack it, after 5 mintues or so of trying to rack the thing it finally gave way (the extractor finally deformed the rim enough to clear it) but the case was still stuck in there too good to try and pull it out with my fingers so I had to go home and hammer it out with a brass rod (only took a little force to get it out). The brass was mixed headstamp range brass (this particular one had a S&B headstamp) and the round was a Montana Gold 124 JHP with 4.0gr Titegroup set at 1.100 OAL. The gun was an H&K P30 and this was my first time shooting the gun so it was pretty disappointing to have this happen. This was my first time using this particular load....I shot about 100 rounds through my XD and then about 30 through the P30 before having the issue. Anyway just wondering what would likely cause this sort of thing so I can hopefully avoid it in the future.
  6. He was saying that you should only use lead or copper plated stuff....he said using anything with a jacket is "irresponsible and dangerous". I was just checking to see if it would be considered "bad form" if I showed up with JHP's....i didn't think it would but I thought I'd check here since i'm a relative SC newbie
  7. I've just started shooting steel challenge matches a couple months ago and I've been using plated bullets....recently bought a bunch of JHP's thinking I would switch to those to get better accuracy. I was talking with a competitor at the last match though and he was saying that people that use JHP are putting others in danger and basically only a jerk would do it. Just wondering what the opinion is out there on using JHP's....i bought a bunch of 124gr Montana Gold
  8. I was given some Xtreme 158gr plated bullets and want to use them for .357 magnum. I'm just wondering if any of you out there are using Xtreme for .357 mag and if so how fast you've been able to get them before suffering plating separation. I know of the plated bullet makers Xtreme is supposedly using the thickest plating.
  9. I'm not familiar with roll crimping...do you need a special die to do that? I just bought the Dillon 3 die set.
  10. My main concern is the crimping as I've heard you're supposed to crimp revolver ammo differently then semi-auto. For my 9mm stuff I basically just lightly taper crimp to take the belling out.
  11. So i've been loading 9mm on my Dillon 550B and been having a good time shooting more and saving money. I just ordered a set of .38spl/.357 dies and am looking for any advice on things I need to look out for on the differences between my experience with 9mm and these two calibers. I'll be shooting the ammo with a Ruger GP100 revolver and Marlin 1894C lever rifle
  12. I was about to place an order for 1000 124gr JHP bullets from Montana Gold. Price is $107 shipped. I noticed however that if you buy a case (3750 bullets per case) it's only $300 shipped. I can't afford to spend $300 on bullets but I can spend $150. I got one friend that said he'd take a 1/4 of the case so that means I need to find one more person that wants a 1/4 case (937 bullets)for $75 We could meet FTF if you're in Oregon and between Salem and Portland. Otherwise I can ship the bullets using USPS Flatrate shipping for $10 and would be willing to split the shipping with the person so it'd be $80 shipped for the 937 bullets. Mods if this is in the wrong forum please move it to the appropriate place.
  13. I'm going to order 1k of the MG 124 JHP this afternoon...after looking around I think i'm going to use a starting load of 4.0 Titegroup at 1.100" OAL.
  14. Guess I should have clarified that for IPSC i'm just shooting Production with my XD9. The load I've been using for plated is supposed to come out at like 1080 or so I believe per Hodgdon's online data thing. Sounds like I'll be switching to JHPs. Doesn't seem like a JHP would be more accurate just from the visual appearance/aerodynamically but I guess if an actual jacket holds everything together better from the "Bang" to when it hits the target it makes sense compared to plated that might warp slightly or something. Plus having something that I could load hot if I wanted to would be nice. Even though I know I'd save money in the long run (I go through 1k rounds every 2 months or so) with a bigger order I can only buy 1k amounts of bullets at a time....otherwise the wife gets mad and that's just a big hassle. So the JHP would cost more but like I said,it's something i'd be willing to pay if they're more accurate and you guys seem to all be saying that they would be. I'll check out Montana Gold...any other comparable companies I should look into? I'm also thinking of switching to Titegroup powder...any recommended recipes for 124gr JHP? The montana gold JHP's look similar to Hornaday XTP's....I'm guessing I can use the same reloading data? Hodgdon has plenty of info for XTP's.
  15. Looking for a single load I can use for IPSC/Steel Challenge (as well as target practice on my own steel targets). I can't use FMJ bullets because my gun club only allows Lead/JHP/Plated Bullets when competing in Steel Challenge matches. I have been using plated so far (Berry's at first, switched to X-treme due to thicker plating) and have been generally happy with them. I'm loading with 4.4gr of HP-38 at 1.140, they function perfect in my gun and the accuracy seems about the same as factory plinking loads (stuff like Remington UMC). Just wondering if there would be any accuracy gains to be made in switching to JHP bullets. They're about $15-20 more per 1000 but if there was a boost in performance I'd probably pay the extra $.
