cnote Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) For the time being i am loading 9mm on a lee pro 1000. The press uses disks to drop set volumes of powders ( the same disk will drop a different weight depending on powder brand.) HP 38 is a recommended powder by BBI and Precision for the smoking problem with moly-lead. One disk will drop consistently 3.85 grains of 38 which produced 1006 fps or a power factor of 126 with Precision 125s. The next disk bumps it a bit to high for PF. Using a 130 grain moly bullet, will that get me in the neighborhood of 132 where i want to be. I know heavier bullets require less powder, and this seems like it would work. Going down a disk would be too close to 125 PF again and there is no info on the Hodgdon's site for 130 lead. Thanks for any help or direction Edited January 18, 2010 by cnote
DougCarden Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Since you are stuck using the disks, the only way you will know for sure is to load some up and go chrono, no way around it. That will tell you what you are looking for. Good luck, DougC
Action Pistolero Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Check the LEE website and see if they still offer The "Microadjustable Charge Bar". It does away with the disks.
MoNsTeR Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Back when I was using a Lee powder measure I found the adjustable charge bar to be total crap. With the disks, I would just err on the high side. If you're shooting for 130PF and end up with 135PF, it's not the end of the world, and the extra power helps with stubborn steel.
cnote Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 I guess is the ultimate question is Going from a 125 to a 130 grain bullet with the same charge weight would be safe when the 125 bullet was coming in at 126 PF , as changing the weight by +/- .1 is impossible
rstandley Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I have extra disks and open the holes untill I get the charge I am looking for, I keep these disks seperated from the stock ones. really not a problem since I always check the charge weight before making a run.
Action Pistolero Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Cnote, I would say that you would be fine to do that. I change from a 115 to a 125 with the same powder charge all the time. Since it is a minor pf load there are no dangers of over pressure. If it was major then that would be a different story.
cnote Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 Thanks for the help, I figured it would be safe and just was looking for someone to set off an alarm, but it didnt happen.
