Hi -

I'm very new to reloading and have a question regarding my 550. This morning I set it up to load .223. I'm trying to use Reloader 15. My problem is that I can't get a consistent charge out of the powder measure. When trying to get 24.0 grns, I'm getting anywhere from 23.7 to 24.4.

Earlier I loaded some 9mm using Bullseye and had no problem getting a consistent powder charge. That was with the original assembly; then I put on a new quick change assembly to begin loading for .223.

What could be happening? I installed the large powder bar, and it seems to have full travel as per the instructions. Something else?

Any ideas? I appreciate any help!

Thanks.

I'm starting to think it's a function of stick powder vs. ball. The more I read on the subject, it seems like ball powder meters much more uniformly.

However, I did take my first 20 rounds to the range after work today, and I was amazed at how accurate they were. Mixed, untrimmed brass and powder charges varying by .7 grns. I shot four groups, and they all measured right around 1 inch. Once I start controlling for all the variables, I can't wait to see how tight this rifle will shoot.

Thanks.

This is a characteristic of extruded powders. It helps if you cycle the handle slower, so that it takes at least one full second to move the powder bar from one side to the other. Expect a typical variation of .1-.2 grain. This minor variation does not seem to have any adverse effect on accuracy out to at least 600 yards or so.
