Does anybody own a Kimber .22 conversion kit? Are they reliable enough to shoot Steel Challenge? What ammo works best in them?

I am sure you will get additional responses, but I have just run two local Steel Challenge matches back to back with my Kimber Conversion and both matches the gun run flawless.

1) As with any new gun and/or conversion I believe they must be broke in first. Run at least a brick through before making any rash decisions.

2) I run CCI Mini Mags exclusively for match use

3) I lube gun before each use. I may not clean it after each use, but I always lube it.

So far this format has been successful for me.

YMMV

I bought one and built it up on a 1911 receiver to make it a dedicated .22. Once the fitting was finished, it runs 100% so far using CCI MiniMag's. I would trust it in a steel match.

My Kimber .22 conversion works great - however if you have a magwell you have to shave the bottom of the magazine to ensure it fits properly.

I owned 1 until tonight. With the money I got for it, I'll be getting a new Pac-Lite barrel for my Mark I.

The Kimber will work just fine, as long as you remember to keep it clean and lubed, and use good quality High-velocity .22LR ammo like the CCI Mini Mag.

I had problems with the magazine getting gummed up with soot. The follower would get sticky and the rounds would start nose-diving in the mag resulting in lots of FTFs.

I cleaned my plastic Kimber .22 mags with a damp Q-tip, and I also burnished the rough edges around the lips very lightly to remove mold seams.

If you get one, I'd recommend checking out the metal mags from Marvel. I'm not sure, but I suspect they may work with the Kimber kit.

slight thread drift ahead...

I went ahead and sprung for the Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit. I had some problems with it initially, but I sent it back and they sent me a brand new one with the Bob Marvel logo on it.

And then I sprung some additional bucks to put a weaver rail on it. Then I mounted a C-more directly to that. Which, now that I think about it, I could have probably just as easily drilled and tapped the iron sighted "shroud" for the C-more, and avoided buying the Weaver rail. Oh...well....

I am using the Advantage Arms magazines for it. I have 6. They are plastic, but they do lock the slide back.

It runs reliably with the Winchester White Box eXpert ammo, the Winchester Gray Super X box, the black and gray box CCI's, I think they call those blazers, the blue-ish box Federals (the 510's) and the red-ish box copper washed Federal 745's.

The Remington Golden bullets and the thunderbolts are ka-ka in my opinion.

getting back more on topic... there is a gal who runs a Kimber conversion at our local twice monthly steel matches. IIRC, I think she fitted something like a Dokter or J-point into the slide's dovetail. I think... It runs 100% .

I have the Kimber have put 2500+ thru it (yes every time I shoot any of my toys I write it down) CCI MiniMag have had no Failures of any kind -0- Just wish i could find a better price on CCI's Just tried a box of Fed AutoMatch 325 rounds had one No Bang, much cheaper but compared to CCI very dirty.

My kimber runs "pretty well" when kept clean and oiled with FP10 and cheap bulk ammo. It runs 100% with quality ammo like cci minimags.

I would just like to find a supply of CCI Mini Mags or CCI Std Velocity bullets. Does anybody know if Advantage Arms or Kimber magazines will work with my Marvel conversion. Sorry for the thread drift

mine likes the high velocity stuff just like these guys have said. bit it works fine with match ammo and a reduced power mainspring and lots of lube. also dont put any pressure on the bottom of the mags. it seems to cause cycling problems.
