square deal conversion - how do I replace

Recommended Posts

Are there any instructions on how to go from one caliber to another on the Sqare deal press? I just got a press and have conversion kits and no idea how to convert. I think I am ok with dies and tool head but not sure where to start with sheelplate removal and replacement.

Go to Dillon Precision's website - I believe there is a downloadable manual for the SDB.

Assuming you took care of things up top:

For the shell plate, lift out the three brass retaining buttons, which are caliber specific, and also remove the bail wire. The center of the shell plate has a retaining bolt that comes out with a hex wrench. Once the bolt is out, the plate will lift off (you may have to adjust the ram up or down a bit). Don't lose the little steel ball bearing that sits in a spring cup on the top of the ram. Leave the pawl arm alone. Just drop in another shell plate, bolt it down (again, you may have to adjust the ram a bit), put in the proper retaining buttons and replace the bail.

On the lever side of the press are the retaining bolts for the primer assembly. If you need to change primer sizes, you unbolt the assembly, replace the primer magazine tube inside the blast shield (make sure it orients the right way - it should drop into a retaining slot and not turn once it does), change the white primer feed to one with the right sized cup, put everything back in and then you're ready to rock and roll.

Thanks for the fast reply. After posting I grabbed my alen wrenches and the manual and started pulling stuff off until I got what I wanted. I would not recommend this approach for everyone. I can say I did some cleaning while I had everything apart and it seems to be moving much smoother that is did and I have no left over parts.

Thanks again

In the SDB manual, caliber change instructions begin on page 12. Read, then dive in. If you need any assitance, or you are unsure of something, phone us when you are in front of the machine, we are happy to go step by step with you.

You are now a card carrying SDB caliber converter. They are very simple.

Protect that little steel ball and don't let it or the gold pins get anywhere near a vacuum cleaner.

Always a good idea to have a few extras of the small pieces that get dropped, sucked up or blown away during cleaning.

And, keep that Dillon phone number handy, best resource you have.
