Sarge
From The Army Times. 300 Winmag during Marine Sniper Competition. Seems to be debate on what happened. Any thoughts?

boz1911
Plugged bore somehow. The split is cool though being 180 degrees. We had a guy at work shoot a plugged (with dirt) Remington 742 and it split in 4 pieces 90 degrees apart.
twodownzero
I bet the barrel split where it was drilled/tapped for a front sight. I'm not sure if the M40/M24 have this, but if they do, that looks like how it'd break. .300 WM and Marines? The M40 is a short action...how did they get a .300 WM? Whose rifle was it? Just curious. 00bullitt
That looks like an AICS chassis. May be something other than an M40. It was a competition. Other teams could have been competing with their type of rifle.
JeffWard
I'm guessing the rabbit stuck his finger in the barrel. Sorry...
Flexmoney
Looks like a bull barrel, but must have been a cow barrel.
