caz41
The wife got me a Gamo Whisper pellet gun for X-mas. We live in town, but just on the very edge and have squirrels galore in the yard. She got it so that I could snipe them out of the trees w/o worrying about the neighbors. So after lunch I get it all ready, put out a box to shoot at and squeeze the trigger. C-R-A-C-K!!!!! This thing is nearly as loud as .22, I would say within only a few db. It is advertised to have 52% noise reduction with the whisper model. Well if that is the case, then the non whisper gamo must sound like a .223 going off. I know for sure that .22 subsonics are quieter than this. Gregg K
The Gamo Whisper will never whisper and it is pretty much a marketing gimmick but it will get better. Air guns will diesel and belch fire, smoke and a loud crack when they have oil in their compression tube. After a clean and lube they will do it again. Shoot it about 30 times and it will get the excess oil out. The first time I cleaned and oiled my Webly Tomahawk it sounded like I shot a 22 magnum pistol out the back door, oops. I crack the back slider door and shoot off the couch to keep the noise down when removing unwanted pests.
Viggen
Run it across a chrono. No matter the method of propulsion if it's past the speed of sound it's not quiet. Heck even at 450fps you had better be wearing earplugs anyway and the speed of sound is a lot faster.
caz41
After doing some further reading I see that lead pellets and heavier and slower should be slightly quieter. Gregg, I will shoot it some more and see if it quiets down at all.
ebg3
Hopefully it'll quiet down some for you. How is the accuracy? EG Edited December 26, 2009 by ebg3
caz41
Hopefully it'll quiet down some for you. How is the accuracy? EG The few that I did shoot seemed to be pretty tight, I honestly didn't get to shoot it very much because I was scared the neighbors were going to call in an active shooter. Once it warms up a little I will bring it out to the cabin and shoot it more.
zero_down
Didn't anyone see the movie Shooter? All you need is a .22 rifle and tape a water bottle to the muzzle end, then you can snipe anything 50 yards away - from a moving boat even!
