Pro2AInPA
I just remembered this blunder from a 3 gun match back in the fall. I run a Redi-Mag and a Magpul BAD lever on my 3 gun rifle. If you aren't familiar with the BAD it's a lever that allows the shooter to manipulate the bolt release/catch with his trigger finger. It's seen here: http://www.magpul.com/catalog/index.php?ma...products_id=362 Anyway. On to my screw up. I engaged my targets at the first position. The bolt locked to the rear. While running to the next shooting position, I dropped the empty mag and inserted the new mag just as I arrived at the next position. I put my rifle's forend up on the barricade for support and pushed down on the BAD lever to chamber a round (or so I thought). Turns out instead of hitting the BAD lever, I hit the mag release, which of course sent my loaded mag to the ground. I'll never do THAT again! Zim
Wow. You know, I was just looking at one of those in the Brownell's catalog tonight and was wondering if it would be a good purchase or not......I'm guessing not! Thanks for the post! Pro2AInPA
Wow. You know, I was just looking at one of those in the Brownell's catalog tonight and was wondering if it would be a good purchase or not......I'm guessing not! Thanks for the post! Well it IS a really nice item. ESPECIALLY when used in conjunction with a Redi-Mag. Just because I made a bonehead mistake doesn't make it a bad product! twodownzero
I definitely wouldn't want to change years of training with the AR-15's ergonomics to something else. YMMV.
gb32
I was running the timer at FB3G this year on stage 9. Had a shooter drop his mag in the sand and reinsert it while ignoring the spare on his belt. I gave my buddy Luke who was spotting a raised eyebrow (I've worked with him so much we have telepathy) and thought to myself "this will not be good". Of course it immediately locked up. After several seconds on attempting to clear the malf, he finally gave up and grounded the rifle and went to pistol. I never laugh too hard when I see this kind of stuff because it's not like I never screwed up.
calishootr
when the redi-mags firat came out, we thought, wow, what a cool idea, till you realize that, once you punch that mag button, you are gonna release BOTH mags at the same time, more than once i had the veritable yard sale of crap around me or behind me as i ran, thankfully i usedto run a 'oh crap' mag in the back pocket last weekend watched a buddy cram a mag that had hitthe dirt on a previous stage full of rounds and trot offto shoot the next stage....yeah...you guessed it, a 27 rd salt shaker...painfull to watch, but what ya gonna do???? sfinney
Always carry at least one more mag than you think you are going to need.

They don't do that any more. The mag in the Redi-Mag is not released by the mag release on the rifle.
Corey
i can imagine it'd be tough to learn new techniques if you've got it engrained in your mind what to do. for me, however, Im getting ready to order my first rifle and it may even see a little 3gun action. Ive heard good things about the BAD, just not a problem like this, haha. live and learn.....and train! Edited January 13, 2010 by Corey
