Pro2AInPA
Can someone explain how shooting minor vs major in limited division affects scoring? I'm starting USPSA next month and will be shooting limited minor until I get the money together for a .40 to shoot major.

Pro2AInPA
Shoot all A's and don't worry about it!! Continuing that train of thought, though. Let's say me and another guy both shoot all A's with a very similar time. I'm shooting minor and he's shooting major. How much does he beat me by? lugnut
As are the same points in Major and Minor... however a C in Minor is 3 while in Major it 4. D in minor is 1 while in Major it's 2. A D in minor is basically a miss without the penalty! If you shoot accurate it don't matter.. if you shoot some Cs and Ds the Major guy will kick your ass. That's really good news! Maybe I'll just stick with the trusty 9mm!

Simple- the points are the same and the faster time wins.
mlmiller1
If you are in the habit of always shooting A's, the scores will be the same. As you progress through your career in uspsa, you may find to gain speed, you may start compromising your hits a bit for speed. That is when shooting minor will cost you. One thing to remember, though, if the match has lots of steel targets, a hit is an A no matter minor or major. You can do ok if you shoot minor, especially at first, but eventually you may want to move on up to major. A hits on every target, every time is hard to maintain, especially at speed. Good luck, have fun! Don't worry too much about major minor at first. After you shoot a few matches, you can start looking at results & see if shooting minor is affecting your placement in the match. The calculations to see how much it cost are relatively simple. When it starts costing too much shooting minor, then move up to major. Use your 9mm ammo savings to buy your major gun & equipment. lugnut
MLM makes some good points. I've been shooting Production for a while now and think I'm going to try Limited Minor at my next match with my Production gun... just for good fun. I know I will for sure! I'd actually prefer to have the Magwell in Production though since you need more reloads in Production! Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to bother with moving my Dawson Mag Extensions to the 17 round mags... I can get ~20 .40s in with them... I bet I could get about 24 9mm in with them. 17+1 will be fine. Shooting Minor might hurt my match results/classifier but I'm really trying to focus on my shooting development more than competing/classifications. I figure if I do this the results will come naturallly. We'll see if I can do this... it's going to be tough.
mlmiller1
Lugnut, If everytime you shoot 100rds of 9mm, you will put aside & save the $$ you would have spent on 40 ammo, it won't be long at all until you can afford the limited major pf gun. Heck, you could put aside half the difference in $$ & it won't be long. Or, if you don't reload yet, use that money you set aside to buy a dillon 550. When I started shooting, I did buy a loader but I would buy supplies in small bulk buys, then everytime I shot 100rds, I would "pay" myself for it & just stack that money up in the safe. It wasn't long till I could really buy supplies in bulk. I know it was my money & if I had enough discipline, I wouldn't have to play the silly "pay myself" game but I don't so this worked for me. If I were trying to move up to a 40, I would play the game again, though. Set aside a certain amount everytime you do some little thing & before long, you have enough money to buy whatever it is. lugnut
MLM- I actually have a gun I can use in Limited Major- I have a G35 with the Ghost Holster, CR belt, pouches, etc. I just reallly like shooting minor for the most part. I shoot a lot of IDPA as well so I shoot my G34 a bunch (major matches coming up). I also have reloading supplies so ammo costs aren't a real big deal- matter of fact I have more .40 brass now that about anything! I have a ton of 9mm as well. I just think it will be fun shooting Limited Minor. I want to focus as much as I can on shooting better... and hopefully more wins will happen.
