TGibe
I am new to USPSA and have been shooting with a group for the last few months. I started asking about a new gun and I have two guns that I can't decide between... I thought I would get some opinions and input from the folks here. First off, I trust the seller and know him pretty well. He is helping sell the guns for others and will probably make $50 total for doing it... He actually owned both of these, sold them to others, and now they are wanting to sell them... Both are .40s... The gun I am most interested in is a Briley Signature 2011 style with more options than I know what they even mean. It is Chrome and has between 500 and 800 rounds through it. It is in pristine shape... Others looked at it with me and commented as such. The second gun is an STI and also has been modified quite a bit (again, I don't know everything that was mentioned). It has had thousands of rounds through it, but when I shot it I was able to shoot tighter groups than I ever came close to with my XD9. Yes, yes, I know there is a huge difference between a $500 gun and a limited gun, it is just the first time I had ever shot one :-) The STI has the safety shortened on the left side which I would want to get replaced with a full sized one if I buy it. So here is the deal: The Briley (on an STI frame) for $1810 total including 3 magazines, and a bladetech holster or The STI for $1600 total including 3 magazines, and a bladetech holster Again, I am leaning towards the Briley, but really don't know why other than it is newer and chromed... Cheers and thanks.
G-ManBart
That's really not enough info for us to make much of an evaluation on. Who built the second gun? I've heard positive things about the Briley guns, but they aren't all that popular (edit to add: in USPSA anyway), so it's hard to say what the sample size is that's out there. Your best bet is to get the opinion of one of the guys you trust and who knows enough about the guns to pick between them. This is no dig on the Briley gun, but it sounds like that may have originally been bought by someone that wasn't really a USPSA shooter and they never got around to really shooting it....hard to say. Even a hard chrome Edge goes for about that much money, so why isn't it more expensive? R, Edited December 23, 2009 by G-ManBart
Two Delta
Do you know what model the STI is ? I would ask someone you have been shooting with that has shot uspsa a while. My main issue with a new gun is reliability then feel and finally accuracy. I think to much emphasis is put on accuracy. Unless one is poorly built I'm sure they are both accurate enough for our game.

I don't know if guns wear out... Should I be concerned with the age if it shoots well and has been well taken care of?

I apologize for posting without all the relevent info... I am still learning a ton and appreciate all the info and help I have gotten here. Chris Keen
You can't go wrong with Briley. They've been in business for ever. Sounds like it's practically brand spanking new, and a heck of a steal! A custom gun at that price sounds better than an off the shelf STI. Thats my vote anyways. Be nice to see some pictures. I'm sure you'll be happy with either one in the end. Edited December 23, 2009 by Chris Keen
Glockcomma
I like Briley but they made some linkless guns, their good just different. If your prospective gun is linkless any barrel replacement would have to be done by Briley or at least supply the barrel I think.
jfrey
I haven't shot any of the Briley Signature series pistols but I have 4 of the Versatilities and they are wonderful pistols. Two fo them are linkless and two aren't. Claudio Salasa at Briley is a whiz at any 1911 or 2011 type pistol. He told me a while back that they stopped putting the linkless barrels into the guns made with the STI frames and they now only use the link barrels. Apparently they made the change back in the early 2000's. If you have any questions about the pistol, call Claudio and talk to him about it. He is a great source of information on these guns. My vote would obviously be the Briley, especially at a great price.

Thanks jfrey, After talking with my friends they think this gun is worth the additional money because the STI has had "many" thousands of rounds through it and is quite a few years older. The guy who bought this has "dozens" of guns and just never shot this one much according to those who now him. Based on thier recommendation I am going to take one more look and then decide. Thanks again to all for the thoughtful comments. Allen
steel1212
Just from what I've read the Briley seems the better deal. Call Briley and ask for Claudio and if he isn't running around like that said chicken like he usually is he should be able to help you out with any questions on that gun. Seems like calling Claudio is the thing to do so I certaily will. Hopefully I can pick up the gun in the next day or two and then once I have it I will call to get all the details on it. TGibe
So I picked up the gun and put about 200 rounds through it and really enjoyed it. Also ended up getting a better deal than I expected in the end so all is good. I will give Claudio a call over the next week or so and get the background on the gun. Here are couple of quick pics. Thanks to everyone for all the helpful info and comments... Cheers, Allen
