Graham Smith Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 I grew up shooting a .22 target rifle with a classic M1907 leather sling. Now that I'm just about done with my flattop AR-15 build, I'm thinking about how to attach a sling. I want to get one of the Turner National Match type slings, but I want to attach it to the free-float tube rather than barrel. The tube I have is smooth so I can either drill a couple holes in it to attach a small rail and sling swivel or I can drill one hole and attach a sling swivel. But how about a solution that does not involve drilling holes? One vague idea I had was to find some kind of S-clip to slide onto the underside of the tube and connect a sling ring to the other loop. Not sure I can make that work so I thought I'd ask if anyone had already been down this road before and had a suggestion. P.S. I already tried a tactical sling and don't like it. I've also looked at a couple variations of hasty slings and most come with sling swivels sewn in and require posts on both ends to connect to.
Jadeslade Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 If you want to shoot with it-need to put a short mount on the handguard. If you just want to carry, get some tube webbing 1" about 1.5 yds and make your own. Tie it on.
Graham Smith Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 If you want to shoot with it-need to put a short mount on the handguard. What do you mean by a "short mount"? A short section of rail?
Jadeslade Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Like a PRI 4" rail with QD stud. PRI Reflex Mount Go to last page of forearms.
Graham Smith Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 I was able to mount a QD stud easily on the free float tube and have broadened my options for slings. One sling I have seen mentioned elsewhere is a Slip Cuff sling from Tactical Intervention Specialists. It seems to be a variant of the 1907 style sling made of nylon. What other options are there for a sling? I don't mean a sling for carry, but for support while shooting offhand, sitting, etc.
