Too Original To Mod

I just can't bring myself to do it.

My intention was to move from 1911 .45 to 9mm.

No problem.

I did that.

Bought the 1990 Combat Commander in 9mm.

Fantastic gun and used it for my 1st IDPA qualifier.

But if I'm going to continue to compete with it, I really need to upgrade the G.I. sights.

Can't do it.

It would be like slapping a set of Keystone mag's on a '63 split window Vette. :(

If it is a Series 80 I would mod it without question. Even if it a Series 70 I would mod it because I love Series 70's better than 80's. I have 2, one in .45 and one in .38 Super that I use in IDPA and USPSA.

Well, if I was a young buck with eagle eyesight, I might do the same.

actually I wouldnt waste money modifying it even if it wasnt a collectors item, any money you spend will be down the drain as far as an IDPA gun, as soon as you learn the ins and outs your going to be wanting a 5 inch gun.

Hey, I had a set of Keystone mag's on my '68 427 4spd convertible. They looked pretty good I thought! :D

If your commander is for sale I bet it will sell muuuuuuuuuch better with an ad in our classifieds... ;)

doc540, I'm 63 and by no means a "young buck with eagle eyesight", that is why I suggested you mod it out. Even more so now that I know it is an 80. I agree, you might feel at a bit of a disadvantage with a non 5" gun but with good sights and a few other mods, no problem. You don't need to spend a lot of $$$$'s (like I have) to be competitive but if you have any doubts move it and pick up something like a Springfield Loaded in 9 (I believe they make one) or pick up a 5" and have someone work it over.

Thanks for all the thoughtful suggestions.

And, yes, I'm going to sell it, but for some reason I didn't think the shooters here would have much interest in it. Probably didn't think that through either. It's on GB.

It's just a personal decision to keep it original and unmodified even though it's a Series 80 in 9mm and only 20 years old. I like the 1911 design and 9mm appealed to me due to commonality of ammo with my other pistols, low recoil in the CC frame, and low cost for more practice.

I just didn't know enough about the sight issue.

I don't intend to become a serious competitive shooter, just looked like a lot of good, clean fun.

Besides, I only carry my Colt snub for PD.

I've already bought another 9mm HK. I like the ergonomics.

I've been using GunBroker for years and never had a problem, but this moring I got this warning from Norton Norton Safe Web

edited to add: I sent this information to GB, so they could resolve it. It looks like a seller uploaded some malicious imagines.

Thanks for the head's up.

I was sweatin' it there for a minute. I thought you were gonna say I'd uploaded some malicious prices.

You DO know that if you keep selling the previous gun when you buy the next one, you're never gonna a good gun collection, right? :P

It's just a matter of money.

I've been wheeling, dealing, and looking for a way to justify a "fun gun" instead of my carry piece and inexpensive home defense guns. Money's tight these days.

I've bought, sold, traded up and ended up with the Commander with hardly any out of pocket expense.

Didn't think through the sight issue cuz I'm still a rookie at this.

Livin' and learnin', though! :D

Get a 5" 1911 next time ;)

Had one before I bought the Commander. And it sold me on the 1911 design even though it was an entry level gun. I now understand what all the 1911 hoopla is all about.

I can relate...I just got an old Commander in .38 Super (or as Colt calls it; Super 38, which is just plain cool)

Eventually, I'll dress this up as my 'formal' carry gun. But I gotta compete with it at some point.

I'm torn, leave it original, or spiff it up? A modern beavertail and sights would make it more shootable,

but might get me blackballed by the purists.

What a problem to have;-)
