sgrc1 Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Help please, I went duck hunting yesterday and obviously exposed the M2 (syntehtic stock black finish) to the elements, i applied some Remington oil to the outside when finished and put it inside the case, when I got home it was all covered with spots of surface rust in the barrell, I have tried wiping it down hard with cloth and oils (WD-40, RP7 and Remoil) but nothing is really working.... What do i do?, I think this is horrible quality that a $1200 gun will rust so fast! any ideas how to remove and prevent in future?
Merlin Orr Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Mine also... No solution. I just wipe mine down with 5w30 and it seems to work as well as anything else I have tried.....
Aircooled6racer Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hello: Try some automatic transmission oil(ATF) on it and leave it on there overnight then wipe it off the next day. It should work better then what you have tried. Thanks, Eric
sargenv Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Eh.. shoulda bought a Browning Sorry, just had to interject a bit.. is it possible that the case you have may have had some moisture in it previous to you putting it away? Some people like to get those silicone impregnated sleeves to put their guns into that I would imagine would protect your gun from rusting.. Dad has one of the field benelli's with the camo wrapped barrel.. he's never had any rust issues with it.
sgrc1 Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 tried oil as well as other cleaning products and nothing worked, the barrel is spotted with areas of surface rust... very dissapointed. What I will probably do is take it for an application of duracoat, I hear this stuff wont rust at all at it will give my barrel its like new finish again, would run about $40-$50 bucks... Will then probably pick up a cheaper pump shotgun in some type of Camo for the dirty work, I hear this camo finish offers excellent rust protection (I guess its like a duracoat?).
Merlin Orr Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Before you buy another shotgun you might see if the one you have still shoots OK... Even with the surface rust mine still seems to throw a good pattern and run dependably.

Oh I know, but it is not pleasing to the eye :-) Regardless, its a great shotgun and will continue to use for years to come but just wont take out for waterfowl anymore, will buy something cheaper to give a beating and be less worried about cosmetic finishes... that's all....
Toolguy Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Leave oil on it for a week out of the case. Then work it with green Scotchbrite and oil. Clean it off with a clean rag and re oil. A lot of times you can't tell it was ever rusted. Don't store it in a case, gun safe is OK.
cas Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) Last time I was at Cabela's they had two brand new M2's in the used gun racks, both with barrels covered with rust. I thought it might be my shot at a great deal, but in typical Cabela's fashion they were only about $30 cheaper than the non rusted new ones. Edited December 16, 2009 by cas
Boats Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 My 870 is much more prone to rust than older blued shotguns too. Way I figure it is the new flat black finishes are cheap to apply but not very good. If I keep a light coat of Balistol on mine and it seems to keep it from rusting. I shoot muzzle loaders and old single shots too and always coat them liberaly with paste wax. It keeps them from rusting even when some have no finish at all on parts and are cleaned with water after use. Have not tried it on a matt finish new gun yet. Boats
DyNo! Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 My Benelli M1S90 rusts SO QUICKLY, that it was caught on video - I kid you not. Watching a sped up tape over the course of the match, you could see the barrel getting browner and browner.
Flexmoney Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Oh I know, but it is not pleasing to the eye :-) Your gun was always ugly. Mother Nature just had to show you.
calishootr Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) any oil(pick one) and some 0000 steel wool rubbed LIGHTLY overthe offending areas has always worked for me in the past for surface rust and i dont store ANYTHING in a foam lined case Edited December 29, 2010 by calishootr
Rob72 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Rem oil is lube, not protectant. In the future, use a Sentry Solutions Marine cloth, a wipe down with Kroil/Marvel Mystery Oil/other hardcore penetrating oil before and after the outing, or rag it with WD-40 B&A. Speaking of, Marvel or Kroil is probably the solution to removing your rust as well. They work exceedingly well when heated slightly, set for 24*, and rubbed with 000 steel wool or a carding brush. I would get your Benni coated. Dura is cheapest, unfortunately in every sense of the word. Norell's molyresin is top notch, and I've heard Cerakote is very good as well. a nitride (from someplace like H&M Metal Processing)would be the best choice for your steel parts.
Bob DuBois Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I rub my guns down with Mink Oil. Brings out the deep color in a blued finish. I believe it will help retard rust better than oil. Of course this is before and not after. Have had luck removing light surface rust on my 1100 after I put it in the safe with out wiping it down. Never store a gun in a case and remove and wipe it down as soon as it get home. I purchase Mink Oil at a Red Wing store not far from the house but other brands should work.
StraightUp_OG Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Naval Jelly and 000 or 0000 steel wool will remove the rust. DO NOT USE GREEN SCOTCH BRIGHT! It will remove the finish.
Ming the Merciless Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 (edited) I've always had good results using RB-17 and 0000 steel wool to remove rust on blued guns. RB-17 Website I keep a couple of the Birchwood-Casey Barricade wet wipe packets in my gunbag and wipe down my gun before it goes back into my bag if it's been wet or I've been sweating alot. I also keep an areosol can of it on my safe and always wipe down my guns with it before they go back into the safe. Barricade website Edited January 4, 2011 by Ming the Merciless
Tyro Shooter Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I tried every thing on my M2 to keep those little rust spots away finaly gave up and went to Ceracoat
Round_Gun_Shooter Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I have successfully used Corrosion X on guns rusted from being in damp cases for friends. Great stuff. Apply, let it set over night and wipe off. LINK
Merlin Orr Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Bark on the shooter and rust on the gun.... Kinda a matched pair.....
Random Gadfly Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I bought a Pedersoli .45-90 Sharps rifle that had some surface rust on the receiver. I rubbed it lightly with a regular pencil eraser and it removed the rust and didn't harm the case coloring.
