Received the news yesterday that my best friend was just diagnosed with Leukemia. I grew up with this man (and his family), we went to school together, fought over the same girl, entered the military together (him going into the Army, 82nd Airborne, and me the Air Force). He was my best man at our wedding. Our kids go to the same school. He has been the brother I never had. What do I do now?

If you could, please say a prayer for this warrior and his family.

I suspect you know the answer -- be present, be his friend, do what you can. And come here to vent....

If you could, please say a prayer for this warrior and his family.

Done....

prayer has already been said...you are a good friend, people are lucky to have you

Leukemia can be beat. Dad had a rare form of it back in Jan-Apr of this year. 4 rounds of chemo later and he is clean of it. If he had not gone through the chemo, likely he would not be with us as it had progressed quickly to a near fatal state. The treating oncologist had only seen this version of it one other time and he didn't say how it turned out. One thing dad had going for him was that he was in phenominal shape for a 74 year old. 6 months previous he'd walked up to 5 mi a day.. so he had a fighting chance. He is still with us and is still leukemia free. Offer all the support you can and keep his spirits up.. Here's hoping he beats it!

Thanks to everyone for their prayers and for the advice. We had a good conversation this weekend about how he was going to tackle this. He has found a great team of physicians at IU Medical Center and that he was very motivated and in a positive spirit. :)

I have a friend that beat it a few years ago. Only lasting side effect was that when his hair came back it was all gray and there was a lot less of it. Otherwise he is doing great! So yes, it can be beat. The positive attitude is the very best first step.
