After testing a few minor loads with my SIG 229 this is the load that works for me.

180gr Montana Gold CMJ

Speer Nickel Plated Brass

3.5-3.7gr Hodgdon Titegroups

Wolf Priimer

OAL 1.135 (but sometimes up to 1.137)

740-750 fps

Dillion 650 XL

What are other people doing for minor light loads?

Montana Gold is a good price and available, anything else out there for good price and available?

Other powder recommendations for the Montana Gold?

In regards to mechanics, it seems you can control velocity with more powder, lower OAL. It seems that the lighter bullet also increases velocity. Using the same OAL I loaded a batch of 165gr Montana Gold CMJ with the same 3.5-3.7 titegroups and it fired fine but the velocity was higher.

Thanks all, this is too much fun!

Don't try to raise or lower velocity by changing the OAL....that's not a predictable or reliable way of going about it. Simply change the powder charge higher or lower and stick within book limits if you want to be safe. Once you've loaded many, many thousands or rounds and have a solid understanding of the basics you can stray a little bit, but at least you'll have a better idea of whether you're heading towards something dangerous.

Pick the OAL based upon what the books recommend and what the gun likes (and fits in the magazine).

Yes, same powder charge with a lighter bullet is going to give you a higher velocity in most situations, but maybe not always....it all depends on how a whole bunch of factors come into play; powder burn rate, barrel length etc, etc.

Have fun, but be safe :)

Your mileage may vary
