jasmap
I just picked up a Mossberg 930 SPX 12ga this weekend. I am probably going to pick up the Nordic +4 to bring the capacity from 7+1 to 8+1. Any other reccomendations from the Mossy owners? Does anyone make an oversized bolt handle? And also what about an oversized bolt release? Thanks! sfinney
Choate makes an over size bolt handle like the one they make for Remington, for the Mossbergs. And exentsions, as well. I put a 3-Gun gear side saddle on mine (for a Remmy). Several topics on this gun already, do a search.....

I wouldn't say there are SEVERAL threads on this gun but there are a few and some of them do not mention additions. I didn't see the Choate bolt handle in them but I may have skimmed over it. Thanks. sfinney
http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?t=167 Good article on SPXs... the bolt handle on the one in the article is a custom job, but the Choates are avail at their website (if not you can just call them) And not to get "pissy" but I did a search just now for "SPX" and found 14 threads on be.com that had SPX somewhere in the title...... thats several in my book Edited December 7, 2009 by sfinney

Thank you. I did the same search and most of these threads don't have any more accessories listed than what I posted. Also, SPX can also be a 500 series shotgun. I am just looking to see if anything else is out there that hasn't been posted yet. Thanks! Edited December 7, 2009 by jasmap
irq23
Here is the bolt handle upgrade: Choate bolt handle Here is an oversize aluminum safety: Vang safety I dont think anyone is making an oversize bolt release but I doubt you will need it. Have Marty hog the loading port out and you should be good to go. Edited December 7, 2009 by irq23

I'm also going to ask him to remove part of the handguard near the loading port. I could do it but it would end up looking like a drunk monkey did it. irq23
NP Jason. How do you like it so far? Did you get it zeroed in for slugs yet?
jasmap
I shot 75 rounds of birdshot through it today. I used 2 different Remington loads and a Federal. It fed all 3 well and loved the Federal. I didn't have any slugs with me, I left them at home. The gun ran perfect for those 75 rounds. It's still early but I am pleased. I will make minor changes but we all do I guess. I ordered the Choate bolt handle and I will order the Nordic +4 tube to bring me to 8+1. I will get some slugs through it and sighted in this week. Also, in case I change my mind after I get the Choate bolt handle, does anyone on here have any experience with The NOB bolt handle from Craig at Gun Connection? Here is a pic of it: Edited December 7, 2009 by jasmap
irq23
Good to hear it ran. As far as the bolt handle is concerned a NOB is a knob. I think the Choate looks cooler and there shouldn't be a performance difference. I would also replace the safety with the Vang one. I guess Mossy safeties are prone to breakage (or so I heard). Plus it is oversized. How does the recoil compare to an 1100 or a Benelli? If you are up there tomorrow I wanna shoot it.
philg80
If you do a youtube search the 930 spx is like a Benelli and can be "ghost loaded" to bring the capacity to 8+1 without having to do anything. FYI. Does anyone know if the safety for a 500 will work? If so Cavalry Arms makes a neat metal safety that is way oversized. Also GG&G has a sling mount to put between the extension tube and receiver tube.

Mark Woodfield
I watched the Youtube Ghost Loading video today.....has anyone experienced any malfunctions from letting round #8 "float?" I have ghost loaded mine and no problems other than a pain in the tail. Just get a Choate +4. I contacted Nordic last summer and they did not have a tube for it. It uses a different thread pitch than the other Mossy's. I drilled out the cap on my Choate +4 to use a cleaning rod for a spring guide - worked great!!! I had to shorten the spring a bit and then it loaded 8 rounds of full power Federal slug ammo and fed all of them just fine. Didn't mess up once. Hope the weather next month is good, I'm really wanting to shoot my first 3Gun match.

VinceU1
The Choate +4 extends about 2.5 past the end of my barrel (18.5 inch barrel). If I can remember to I'll post pictures later today.

If I can remember to I'll post pictures later today. Ok, finally remembered to post some pictures. This first post is of the Choate extended bolt handle. Notice it's kind of tall and MIGHT interferre with some types of optics or mounts. Since I'm not running in open, I'm not too worried about that. This next picture is of the entire gun, notice how far out the +4 tube hangs out past the end of the 18.5" barrel. Also notice the marking on the tube by the muzzle. I didn't notice anything hitting the tube after almost 100 rounds through the gun. Now I've got to wait for next months 3Gun match. ETA: I had to trim the spring a little bit to get the gun to feed correctly. The spring from Choate was 39" long and when I'd put 8 rounds in the tube I couldn't get it to feed the first round at all. The spent casing would eject but the next round wouldn't come out of the magazine tube. I trimmed the spring back to 34" and it feeds all rounds like it should. philg80
Take some skate board tape and put around the end of the tube past the barrel to get rid of the blast markings. Several of our 3 gunners do this. Nothing actually hits the tube. Thanks for the pics. That tube is long....at least more than I expected. I will have to keep thinking to decide which one I want to add. I did put the Choate Tac latch on mine already though.

I had the stock 7+1 tube on mine, then I tried the Choate 8+1 tube and it only stuck past the barrel about 2.5 inches. You sure they shipped the right tube to you? They make a 8 shot a 9 shot and a 10 shot extension in the matte blue for a 930. The one you want is the 9 shot extension for 8+1. (see pic) The one on the left is factory length, the middle is 9 shot, right 10 shot. You do have to trim the suppkied spring quite a bit to get 8 shots in the middle sized tube, but it works. I just used the stock spring and follower.

ETA, I got both the handle and the tube from Midway. They're closing out the tubes for about $35.00 and the handle is $10.00 Edited January 25, 2010 by VinceU1
