benos
This one's got me stumped. I was trying to get Paul's photo's off her iPod and into her new MacBook Pro. Before doing that, I copied her "Photos" folder out of her iPod onto my computer so I'd have them in case her iPod crashed before she got her new computer. But I never looked at what was in the folder. So today, since her iPod is still in good shape, I tried to get her photos back in her new computer/iPhoto - when I realized that the only thing in her Photos folder is one small (420KB) file called "Photo Database" and at the same file level, a folder, "Thumbs" with three files in it, formatted as "F1024_.ithmb" that all total about 450 MB. I tried putting the Photo Database and Thumbs files in her users/Pictures directory, to see if iPhoto would read them but no go. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? be

BritinUSA
Not sure if this will work, but did you try using the IMPORT function and pointing it toward the iPod ? Not sure if it would work or not...

The last post in your first link describes my problem exactly. And your second link looks like the cure. I didn't think a photo recovery app was necessary, because I thought I remember reading on forum somewhere (while searching for music recovery info) that you just had to double click the iPod and drag the photos folder off of it. I know I read that.. but maybe it was an old thread and doesn't work anymore. Not sure if this will work, but did you try using the IMPORT function and pointing it toward the iPod ? Not sure if it would work or not... It's weird, with the iPod mounted, I click to Import in iPhoto, the iPod doesn't appear when I select Desktop. Good idea though. be

Make sure that you turn off automatic syncing first before you connect. Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that says Prevent iPod. wgnoyes
So wait a minute. Is this an iOS device or is this an iPod Classic (tiny screen, click wheel)? Okay, I'm assuming the answer to that question is iPod Classic, given your references to .ithmb files and file structures. You can't get into the file structure of an iOS device from OS X that I know of. You also cannot use iPhoto to import from an iPod classic. These pre-ios devices were intended only to receive materials from your computer, not send anything back. That being the case, launch iTunes, click devices, and click the checkbox labeled "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically. Hit ok. Now plug in your iPod. On the summary screen in iTunes for the iPod, make sure "enable disk use" is checked and hit the apply cmdbutton. (Given your original post, I suspect this is already the case.) NOW, go here http://www.digidna.net/picsaid and download the mac version. Install it. Launch it (jump through OS X's security hoops as need be), and it should go find your iPod automatically and show you a list of your photo albums and the pictures within. Drag to select the pictures you want (or click a single picture and then hit CMD-A to get them all) and click on 'copy image to folder'. Navigate to the receiving folder on your mac and hit "select". You'll see a fast progress bar and then it'll be done. Your pictures will be in the target folder in .jpg format. The utility cannot apparently pull from the Photos folder that you copied from the iPod; it has to go after the device itself. After you're done, delete the app if you like (it didn't add any settings files to the preferences folder in either "Library" folder), turn off 'enable disk use' for the iPod, and if you had 'auto sync' turned on in your iTunes preferences before, go back and clear that check box in preferences->Devices. I just tried all this, it works, and worked for free. And my iPod dates from 2005. Edited November 27, 2013 by wgnoyes
