texasdog Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Why is Viht so popular and expensive? For me Viht320 are bulky and hard to keep consistent. I was using Titegroup but it smoked like a freight train! I sold all my viht and titegroup and now use accurate no2 for my 45acp/1911. It has small grains and is easy to keep a good measure on. shoots great. I am still working on getting my fps to be consistent. My smith says he is able to get a +/- 3 fps deviation. Mine is nowhere near that. It is better now that I am crimping correctly and have a good OAL.. but still not so consistent. great Powder though. My smith swear by it, so I'm sticking with him on that one.
BritinUSA Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 The powder comes from Finland. Transport costs, the low value of the US dollar, import costs etc. All contribute to the price. It is one of the most consistent powders out there. I've tried various others but always come back to Vihtavouri.

Tried Viht350 and I can dial in the fps I want and get 99% consistency. Also it is very clean. Yes more expensive but with more accurate loads the efficiency makes up for the $. 40SW 180gr MtGFMJ 5.9gr Viht350 CCI primer = 910FPS
larry cazes Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I'm with you there. I never thought it was worth the extra cost or hassle due to limited availability. So many good powders available today.
kmitchl Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Would be helpful to know the caliber you are loading and the pf you are require. I load 40 S&W minor with AA#2 and get single digit SD's over the chrono. Only thing to consider is AA#2 is reverse temp sensitive - get slower as the temp rises - which can have a dramatic effect on the pf with the temp variations in Texas.
kgunz11 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Vihta Vuori powder can be hit or miss on availabilty. I've found a way to cure that problem though. The reasons I am so fond of N320 is it doesn't smoke, it's extremely clean, and it is the least temperature sensitive powder on the market. When someone calls me about powder recommendations, I tell them why I like the N320, but then I also tell them Solo 1000 is such a close 2nd it's a great substitute, and at about 1/2 the cost. Powder weights between the 2 are almost exactly interchangeable as well.
rmerritt Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I have been using VV N320 for about 6 mo. it burns clean, like clays, but is more forgiving than clays. It also meters really consistant thru my 650, it is a hit and miss to find it in sportsmans warehouse. ive tryed titgroup, burns to hot and really smokey. I am currently trying Winchester auto-comp, but have not loaded enough of it or chrono, to give an opinion on that powder. happy trails
Chris Keen Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 320 is ALL I will use. Other powders are cheap, but you get what you pay for in this world. Other powders tend to be dirty, smokey, HOT, temperature sensitive, inconsistent, or ALL OF THE ABOVE. As for consistency, the only way to get +/- 3fps is to use brand new brass. Or at least all 1 head stamp. There's no way to get that small of a variance with mixed / used brass. +/- 10fps would be damn good with mixed brass. I love 320. Just buy extra next time. Enough to get through the whole year if possible. It only comes over on a boat once or twice a year, so plan your purchases accordingly.

Im using 45acp, magtech primers, Precision 230g rnf with AA#2.
