What is your pet 9mm load?

I am thinking about getting into reloading 9mm as I am starting to shoot a lot; 500 rounds a week or more and availability and cost of ammo is killing me.

Out of curiosity what is the average cots per round that you guys are running? I have looked at the costs for bullets, brass, and primers and powder and it looks like the per round cost is about $0.30. Granted I was using high numbers for match grade bullets, new brass and expensive powder but this number seems high.

Where are you guys ending up?

Still no Ramshot pet loads ... guess it's just good for open/major in 9mm?

I'll be trying Ramshot Competition one of these days.I'll be using 125 and 147gr lead bullets, looking for Minor.-Mike

I have a bunch of Ramshot Competition. It works great with 200s in 40S&W (MAJOR). Let us know how it works with 9MM (MINOR). Will be trying some myself and trying some Silhouette loads also.

Looking to see what everyone likes for their "pet" 9mm load. ...{snip}...

Please include: bullet type, weight, powder, charge, feel, consistency, other data (smoke, foulage, etc).

Looking for common weights making minor (i.e. 115gr, 124-5gr, 147gr).

Thanks,

-T

I'm a know nothing rookie. But, I've been using the following, if for no other reason than its what I can get that the guy behind the counter said will work well:

124gr Montana Gold FMJ

4.5gr Win 231 (using an RCBS uniflow drop that seem to be dead-nuts consistant)

WSP primers

Federal or Win brass

OAL of ~1.135" (1.134" - 1.136" with RCBS carbide dies and single stage press)

Crimp to just enough for bullet to properly headspace in my pistol (I spend time checking this for consistency when setting up. Ususally if its good for 10 in a row, it good enough for a 1,000)

This seems to be hot enough to burn clean. I see just a little smoke when doing Bill-drills. And, the spent brass has just a little soot.

My average muzzle velocity is 1,050fps giving a PF of 130 using a single Chrony F1.

As far as how it feels: it has slightly less percieved recoil that factory. Other than that, I wouldn't know the difference.

160g cast and 2.7g Solo 1000 so soft it's almost like cheating.

A 160gr bullet with that amount of powder must certainly produce a very soft recoil but don't you find yourself having to wait for a fraction of a sec longer on follow-up shots for the slide to return?

I tried doing a similar thing with .40S&W minor load for Production and I felt like I was waiting so long for the slide to return that I started muscling the gun. That load setup didn't work for me but my wife loves it.

I noticed no one mentioned Accurate 2,5 or #7. I had some I was getting ready to try. Is there any reason no one uses Accurate Powders? Looked to me like #5 would meter a heck of a lot easier then 231...

I think that Winchester Super Field (WSF) is an ideal 9mm powder... proper load density... very clean burn... very consistent ejection pattern. I load 3.8 grains with any 147 grain bullet (need 851 to make 125... get 880 average from 4.25 inch M&P or 4.75 CZ). I like the 147 grain because they recoil less than 115 and 124 bullets at the 125 PF, and they handle steel (pepper poppers) better than the lighter weights. No problems with reliability/ejction patterns.

Zero 124FMJ

VV N320 4.2g

CCI SPP

1.145 OAL

Whatever brass happens to roll underfoot at the range.

Works perfect in 7 different 9mm pistols, all from different manufacturers.

Depending on how bad the primers set me back, I'm in for $.12-.14 per round.

I'm running:

  • Precision Black Moly 124gr
  • Solo 1000 4.4gr
  • 1.10" OAL
  • Wolf Small Rifle primer
  • 130.4pf through Springfield XDm 9mm at 50 degrees, 800' above sea level

About one in every 100 is a light strike with Wolf SR. Ran almost perfectly with Winchester Sm Pistol Mag primers, but I have had a re-order with Powder Valley on back order for 10 months now, so Wolf is all I can get.

Hello: My pet this week is 121 Montana Gold, 4.3grains Tite Group, Winchester primers and a OAL of 1.140". This is for a Glock 17. It could change next week :roflol: Thansk, Eric

That was the load I started out with when I got back into shooting. I burned through some of these today just to see how the shoot in my G17, and they did pretty good.

Now, I'm running a 130gr BBI LCN, over 3.7 Solo1000 at an OAL of 1.125. This is my pet load, and I will stay with it for the next long while. It is just right in all aspects.

Edited to add: This combo showed no appreciable lead in my G17 barrel when I cleaned after about 500 rounds. I got more leading running .40 in my TS barrel.( Same powder, same bullet maker.)

Have/had similar problems with Wolf SR primers in a CZ-75 SP01. Just kept increasing the primer seating depth until the problem went away. Normally, would not recommend that but I'm not the only one in the local area that experienced the same problem and all have done the same to correct it.

I only chrono'd similar loads with 4.3 and 4.4 grains, with my XDm. They averaged 1062 fps for a PF of 132. I wanted to bring it down close to PF of 128 so I cut the powder back to minimum for this load. I need to chrono my 4.1 loads to see if they exceed PF 125, might need to increase to 4.2 based on your results above.
