hueycrew
I've designed a USPSA Stage that will have several targets that will use hard cover, painted black on the target. I've read in the rules that I can remove that "hard cover" portion of the target instead of painting. So my questions are: 1. Has anyone else tried this technique? 2. Do I have to replicate the non scoring border on the cut edge? Thanks
Joe4d
4.2.4.2..........................Such targets must be fitted with a replacement non-scoring border........................
hueycrew
read right past it... Ever seen it done? Thanks for the rule number BTW, how can I replace the border? Edited May 25, 2009 by hueycrew
Flexmoney
Use black masking tape...or paint some regular masking tape black. (Don't use black electrical tape...it is stretchy, and won't stay put.) Why do you want to remove the hard cover, instead of painting it black? Nothing wrong with it. I just like having the surface area of the whole target to use for stapling it to the target sticks and such. That provides stability, and well as keeps the target intact in the event of somebody shooting off a staple or stick.
Nik Habicht
Also keep in mind that you need to retain at least 25% of the A-zone or the entire upper A-zone.....

The holes that get puched in it are hard to call on edge hits. Target Barn has some good tape for this purpose. Also Flex is correct in the stability aspect. I am sure your target stands are designed to hold full width targets. AL
shred
In France at the European Championships they had little pre-made half-targets-- non-scoring border perfs and everything, but cut off about halfway down, the missing half of course being declared 'hard cover'. As near as I can tell there is no US supplier of same. In addition to being considerably cheaper than full targets (not to mention paint), they made for very interesting shooting. We're so used to the outline of the entire target, HC / NS or no, that target messes with your head and aim quite a bit. Try some at a match someday. It's fun. The non-scoring border doesn't have to be black-- a swatch of target tape or pencil line will do nicely and in fact would be preferable to black, according to 4.2.
hueycrew
I think this time I'll be creative with painting hard cover. Maybe next time....
