Spray_N_Prey
Well i'm using the above setup and thought I had it worked out. Went to a match and after the match let a few guys that shoot lots of ICORE try out my gun and they thought it was pretty hot. they gave me some of their rounds to try and WOW it was light. NO RECOIL!!! what i'm using is a 627 pro with 158gr lead bullets, using starline brass (38 Short Colt) and was using 3.2 grains of tightgroup. Does anybody know what I should be loading (powder wise) for this setup? I don't want to go so low that it isn't accurate.
DougCarden
Shaun, I dont mean to sound trite, but we wont know until you chrono them...... I would make some test loads from 3.2, 3.4, 3.6 and go find a chrono to use and find out a load that is around 125-130PF and call it good.... Good luck, DougC
Spray_N_Prey
i'm running 3.2 and the other guys think it's too powerful, so i guess I would need to go down. I don't have a chrono, so that's why I was hoping someone would have a load setup.
71Commander
I'm loading 3.3 TG @ 1.135. They're a little warm but not over pressured. I could go to the 115 gr bullet W/ 4.0 TG and soften them up but I don't think that they would make PF. Edited May 18, 2009 by 71Commander
Spray_N_Prey
doesn't a heavier bullet along with a lighter charge soften up, not a lighter bullet with more powder?
71Commander
doesn't a heavier bullet along with a lighter charge soften up, not a lighter bullet with more powder? You would think so but I think that in this case, with the 158's being seated so deep, the felt recoil of the 115ers are milder.
AzShooter
I always shot 158s seated long and never had a problem with recoil. My best powders were Uniue and Red Dot in the .38 short colt.
needknees
What was your charge of red dot and what length were you seating them at? I'm a recent inductee to the whole short colt thing and "worked up" a load with N310 and 158LRN that seems extremely promising, but I have a boatload of e3 to burn... and in speaking with an Alliant tech, and from my loads in other calibers, e3 is essentially the same thing as red dot but cleaner with slightly less smoke. AzShooter
3.2 grains of Red Dot or 3.3 grains of Unigue at 1.35 oal worked real well. I could actually push them hotter with Unigue at 3.7 grains but thta's just more powder then needed.
20nickels
Bump. I just cast up a mountain of these 158gr RNFPs and was hoping to use their weight to put down steel with authority. I think I'll try Unique. AZ, where do you crimp yours, no lube showing right?
AzShooter
3.2 grains of Red Dot or 3.3 grains of Unigue at 1.60oal worked real well. I could actually push them hotter with Unigue at 3.7 grains but thta's just more powder then needed. Corrected OAL correction to AOL
m610
Anyone try 3.2 Trail Boss with 125RN for a low recoil load?
dnuke146
Anyone of you who have used Red Dot, Unique or Tight Group loads compared them to 120pf bullseye loads for felt recoil and accuracy. Im using 158gr. Bear Creeks with 3.2 of bullseye at 1.135 OAL in Starline SC brass. I was getting 1 1/2 groups at 23 yards the other day(set the target, shot the groups and then measured distance ) Thanks, Doug
