Pardon the newbie question...I like 1911s. I'll likely shoot SS. But was wondering which production guns are most like the 1911s?

BTW I have a Beretta and do enjoy shooting it, but am significatly better with a 1911.

Para Ordinance LDA (light double action). It's is basically a 1911 that's been converted to a short stroke double action. Has the grip safety, thumb safety, everything is 1911 except for the trigger group. It's what Todd Jarrett shoots in production. You'll have to check the official list for the approved model.

From another web site:

CZ's are definitely my favorite 9mm pistols of all time. They'll never get as big a hearing as they deserve in the U.S., because they were originally viewed as a "commie pistol", but their reputation is still growing steadily as more shooters realize what an undiscovered jewel they are. Colonel Cooper said the CZ 75 was the best DA/SA-type auto-pistol in existence. He also liked that you could carry it cocked and locked, like a 1911, so that you could shoot it entirely in single-action mode if desired.

I would assume the Colt Double Eagle would be the closest thing, but they are hard to come by, and the DA trigger is definitely not 1911'ish.

The only .45 I currently own. A heavy triggerpull that lacks anything positive by way of attributes. It is a heavy POS that should never have received the Colt moniker. I would sell it, but noone has ever bit. Wanna paperweight? YOU PAY SHIPPING! ( Not quite that bad, but close.) <_<

+1 on the CZ and Tanfoglio lines. I have shot CZ75B in production, but you will need to do some trigger work, like a 15lb spring and the competion hammer. Same goes for the Tanfo. between the two I prefer the CZ and the SP-01 and Shadow are the tops in that line.

I am old school like heavy metal gun and a hammer. The only plastic gun that I have been impressed with is the M&P Pro, it seems to have a decent trigger and should work as a production gun right out of the box. It is plastic but it does not feel like a Matel Toy. I only shot about 20 rounds in one at a practice session but I could run it fairly fast. I won an XD and shot it once sold it the next day. With night sites the XD would make a good carry gun, but it would need a lot of work to be a match gun.

There is no excuse for a bad trigger on a 1911 take it to a good smith have them replace the cheap parts and do a trigger job, shoot single stack or limited 10. Doing this will teach you how to do a reload plan and how to shoot stages, clean mags, and hit what you are shooting at since you don't have a huge mag full of bullets to spray and pray, when the match is over it can be your carry gun.
