Wanted
Ok, I worked out all the bugs (I think) and I'm ready to load some .223. I have some Tac and Xterminator powder. Only confusing part is finding the right OAL. Loading 55gr. Hornady FMJ with mixed brass for plinking. I'm finding some charges for Xterminator. The OAL I find is 2.250 and 2.260 Which do I use? Any help
RiggerJJ
Depends on what gun you are firing them in... USUALLY an AR15 will like them 2.250 or a bit shorter (I load for several AR15s, and 2.240-2.245 works best for these) any longer than 2.250 and there may be problems with the round being too long for mags, depending on the mags. a bolt gun may take em at 2.260 or longer depending on the chambering. jj Edited May 3, 2009 by RiggerJJ
Wanted
Thanks for the follow up. It's a Bushmaster, 1-9 twist .
Big Bore
Load to the center of the cannelure and call it good for plinkers. Xterminator works great with 55's and the Tac does not. TAC does work well with 69's or heavier
anachronism
Watch your case length, especially in 223s with "match" chambers. Long case necks can cause you pressure problems. My DPMS had a short throat & it took me forever to figure out why I was blowing primers. I trim every case to minimum spec. It also make life much easier with press setup, bullet seating & especially crimping. I crimp everything except my accuracy loads for my scoped AR. rstandley
+1 on checking case length. I have had no issues since I started checking every case. Get a die to swedge the primer end on mil-spec cases. X-terminator works great on 55gr bullets and short barrels. <
