Figure about 100-150 rounds above the stated round count needed for the match. You might need extra for reshoots or maybe zeroing the gun if necessary. ALL the rounds should drop into and out of the barrel of the gun you will be shooting as well as a backup gun if you are taking one. Any unused ammo will come home with you and be shot at your next local match. Err on the side of caution.

Pat

It all depends on how much you intend to miss! :roflol: I believe the general order stands at 50% more than the round count. Take into consideration malfunctions with your gun, reshoots, function check/zeroing sights. All of these things can add to excessive rounds spent at a match. Using this percentage of additional rounds to bring has worked well for me and others. Good Luck! H!

If you're driving, there's really no reason not to bring twice the round count.....

....I'm also anal enough to bring multiple batches of ammo, loaded on different days, just in case a portion of ammo should fall victim to the dreaded "unsafe ammo" disqualification.....

I also like double and have to admit, the "unsafe ammo" never crossed my mind. Thanks

Nik, does this include local matches? Come on Double the amount of ammo! :roflol: Sounds like alot of doubt about your ammo! Well now that your almost done with school, maybe after you find a job you can get back to playing our silly game and churning out reliable ammo! LOL! H!

If you reload your own ammo and are preparing some for the match it doesn't hurt to pull a round every 100 or so that are made and either pull the bullet and measure the powder or take them to the range and chrono the rounds just to make sure your press isn't feeding a powder drop different then what you want it to be feeding. It's takes some time but it's better then not be prepared.

I have ammo and chrono records for about 6 Nationals and 4 A2 matches. I know what it takes to make major no matter the weather (at those venues). So no matter what changes in my load I may make throughout the year(s) I always come back to my National recipe and have very few worries. VV320 at 4.88, 180gr, loaded to about 1.19 AOL produces a consistent 170 power factor. At last year Nats, one match was 167 and the other was 171--due to differences in temperature on the chrono day.

I used my 'saved' ammo to also validate against new match ammo. The reason is chrono'ing in sunlight can show difference velocities due to various conditions of the day. If my saved ammo is coming in at 930fps and my new ammo is coming in at 925 fps I am not going to be concerned. If the new has a significant change then I will go back and re-evaluate my loading technique. My goal is get to the 170pf range and not worry about weather.

I have been at several big matches where squad members cut their velocities too close and ended up shooting minor or for fun.

Back to your original question: load double the amount plus 10% and keep the rest as a base line for future big matches.

I confess to being one of those who gets queasy looking into an empty ammo box during a match, even if it's the last stage and my mags (and I have extras) are all loaded. That being said:

If you drive - bring as much as you want, 50% more than the published round count should be enough, but double if you want absolutely no chance of running out.

If you fly, you're limited by the 11# rule. If you are shooting a 180 grain 40 load, that's less than 300 rounds (the airline will weigh the boxes as well as the ammo). You can chance bringing all 450 to 600 rounds in your luggage, hoping that the airline won't weigh it, but don't count on that - at my 1st Nationals I had to leave part of my ammo behind. It's easier to bring more if you are traveling with family who won't be shooting - you can stash part of the ammo with them. And if you bring it all with you, you can bring what's left back with you, too.

If you cannot fly with all the ammo you need, even cut down to 150% (which is low as I'm comfortable with), you'll have to ship all or part of the ammo. Sounds peachy - sending gobs of ammo, but don't go overboard. If you have, left over, more than you can bring back on the plane you'll have to ship the rest back. I know several competitors at the '08 Nats who spent some time on the last day dumping their ammo into the berm at the chrono bay, just so they wouldn't have to deal with shipping it back. If you ship, ship early enough to reship if the ammo doesn't get to where it was supposed to go.

Good luck at the Nats!

Should of asked a different way, What is the "usual" round count for the Lim Nats ??

Figure 300-350 rounds

I took 500 for each last year, and started to feel the pinch after a couple of reshoots. You can count on a lot of hard shots and long steel.

This is an airline by airline thing...not a TSA rule. Alaska Air allows you to pack as much ammo you can into a 50lb suitcase.

I'm flying on Alaska!

Good point.

Unfortunately, Alaska doesn't always go where I need to go w/ my gear. <_<
