steveyacht
I am considering getting a Norinko SKS that can be had cheap, if not for the cheap part, I wouldn't. If I end up with this club, I want to put a replacement stock and a couple accesories on it to make it a decent gun for local three gun matches, estate defense ( ) and general fun shooting. I would prefer one with an AR style collapsable stock and Picatinny rails for sights, light and maybe a laser. What stocks, magazines and other accessories would you suggest? Thanks, Steve
cas
IMO.. You can only make it worse. SKS are what they are, as they are and good at it. Trying to make them better or into something they aren't is folly.

If this is indeed the case, what would you suggest as a more affordable way to get involved in Three Gun shoots without spending $1,500 to over $2,000 on an AR or like rifle? Or, is this a sport where if you can't afford the game, stay home?

What do you need a light and laser for in 3 gun?

What do you need a light and laser for in 3 gun? Well, my initial thoughts were to get a stock that would make the gun more manageable in tighter conditions so I could use it as a home defense gun. The Laser and light would enhance the capabilities in that regard. Tapco makes a product that I am considering.
OLD SF MJT
Just my $0.02 worth: The SKS is a tough, reliable performer as an entry-lever carbine for 3-gun. You could do FAR WORSE! I have one & use it occasionally for a match "just to maintain proficiency!" I have done three things to it: 1) Replaced the original stock with a regular sporter-style poly stock. I am long-armed & the original stock is WAY too short! 2) I installed an aperture sight - from Williams I think. Nothing fancy! 3) I jumped off the deep end & replaced the factory mag with a 20 rounder from Tapco. (Don't waste your time with any other replacement mag save the poly Tapco - all others are universally crap!) I use itin the same fashion as the factory mag - load from stripper clips, but the 20 rd. capacity is handy sometimes. Two other things you MIGHT consider: The TechSight. I have heard good things about it. And, there is a compact rail mount for optics that replaces the rear sight. It looks pretty nice & I am considering one as my aging eyes don't do irons like they used to! As always, YMMV! Old SF

You can be in for about $1,000, and you don't have to worry if the Meopta is better than the Trijicon is better than the Burris. Bill
NSiess
1500-2000 is easy to spend on an AR but you dont have to. A local shop here has 4 DPMS Sportical rifles on the shelf for $829 each. Buy a detachable carry handle and front sight for about 100 bucks and you have all you need for 3 gun at less than a grand. Its more money than the SKS, but it fills both rolls much better and still leaves room for growth. Way down the road you can get a Millett DMS 1-4 scope at about $200, a compensator, different stock blah blah blah. Nothing about 3 gun is cheap but it doesnt have to be ridiculously expensive either. I'm sure the SKS would be fun but the AR has a lot more going for it. sierra77mk
I am short and the factory stock works fine for me. I would only upgrade the stock if the stock does not fit you or if the receiver is loose in the wood. A good 20rd fixed mag would be the only thing I could recommend but I just have a 10. If TAPCO makes a good one then that is probably easier to get than an original CHI-COM one. The SKS can be competitive in the appropriate matches. I took first in iron sights a few years ago at a match that used neutralize scoring. I shot all single "A"s and was faster at 50yds than the guys shooting double taps with AR's. I reloaded from a gunners apron type of ammo carrier with small pockets with Velcro flaps. I still like to shoot the SKS at the shorter range matches at least once a year. Total luck but I have hit larue's at 420 with my SKS in competition. Twice One tip: If you can, polish the strippers with a dremel buffing wheel so the rounds slip off easier with less drag.
