Micah
I watched this tonight after it was suggested to me during a conversation that I had with the curriculum director of my district. Ben Stein (you know, the Bueller...Bueller and Win Ben Stein's Money guy) takes a look at the battle between Darwinian theory and Intelligent Design. Without opening a can of religious and philosophical worms, I will say that I found the documentary an interesting introspective look at the forces behind the two beliefs. Chris iliff
Like Pharaoh said, I don't want to start a big argument, but they should teach both sides. There's a book entitled "A Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel that delves into the subject by interviewing the leading minds in most major fields, astronomy, physics, biology, etc... After finishing the book I was really pissed at the school system in this country. Most teachers don't know, they were indoctrinated just like their students. CSEMARTIN
they were indoctrinated just like their students. Blind leading the blind if you ask me. Don't tell my wife I said that--she's a school teacher. But in her defense, she taught the "special" kids. They're never going to get any of this anyway. badchad
Like Pharaoh said, I don't want to start a big argument, but they should teach both sides. I think closing the thread is the only way to avoid a big argument. As for both sides, if you want fairness it shouldn’t be “both sides” but rather “all sides.” Lots of religions have creation stories that most people don’t want taught in science class. FWIW, Intelligent Design isn’t science, and it sure isn’t the book of Genesis either. There's a book entitled "A Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel that delves into the subject by interviewing the leading minds in most major fields, astronomy, physics, biology, etc... I haven’t read that book but I have read other “Case for” books by Strobel. He doesn’t really interview what an impartial observer would call “leading minds” by any objective standard but rather minds that are going to answer the way he wants them to. He doesn’t interview any witnesses for the other side IIRC either. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you all would rather I didn’t.

ShaunH
I think it would help if the THEORY of evolution was taught as an actual scientific "theory" and not subtly conveyed as a law or scientific observation. I can't tell you how many lectures for anthropology I sat through listening to "what they think" happened with a professor who would insult anybody who raised a point of opposition. It is as polarizing as the "Global Warming" debate. Those in opposition to either subject are treated as a pariah. I liked the movie, but I would rather see a full live debate on the topic with a moderator, rather than a movie splicing a discussion here and there. Regardless of how we came to be on this planet, it still doesn't answer a fundamental question in my mind...why haven't I made master yet?! badchad
I think it would help if the THEORY of evolution was taught as an actual scientific "theory" and not subtly conveyed as a law or scientific observation. Evolution is taught as a scientific theory, just like gravity. Evolution is also taught as a fact, just like gravity. I think you have some confusion over what the distinction is.
