Aircooled6racer
Hello: I was wondering about how much brass are in a 5 gallon bucket in 9mm,40 and 45? I am starting to fill up some 5 gallon buckets with brass and was curious about how many empty cases fit in the bucket. I know some of you guys must know Thanks, Eric

Larry White
If you fill them all the way to the top, regardless of calibre or wieght they hold almost exactly five gallons, hope that helps.---------------Larry Edited December 4, 2008 by Larry White

mlmiller1
I just sold some 9mm to a friend. I have a 5 gallon bucket that was filled up about 4.5 gals worth. I counted out 4k from that bucket & estimate there are at least 3k left in it. Maybe a little more. I suspect filled absolutely to the top, you would have 8k 9mm in a 5 gallon bucket. Sean Gaines
count out 1000 of each caliber and weigh, than weigh the bucket and when you get the total weight subtract the bucket weight and divide the total weight by the weight of what 1000 rounds weigh. That will give you a rough estimate. I believe 1000 .40 cal weight is 11lbs once your done counting everything let us know what you come up with. sargenv
I'd always weighed out 10 pieces of brass to get an average, multiply that # by 1000, and then divide total weight by 7000 to get pounds.. I am not going to count out 1k pieces of brass If I'm trading or selling brass, to make up for any error I just toss in a handfull to "make sure" there are at least 1000 usable pieces in there. It's worked so far

Gallon coffee can9mm = 1300 .40 = 1000 .223 = 600 jiggled a while 9mm = 9000 per 5 gallon bucket .40 = 7000 " " .223 = 3600 " " The 5 gallon bucket hold about 7 1 gallon coffee cans full. I guess because they fit in more efficiently due to the different radius of the bucket... The bucket being filled to about 1.5 " from the top. Probably actually more than 5 gallons as the buckets are generally a little taller than an actual 5 gallon capicity..? The only one jmorris did not already have (I think) was the .223 in 5 gallon figure.... The stuff he came up with and mine, for the limited calibers I counted, were very close....
